Jenni Rope - Climbing Tree
My sister (@evelinaromano) and I put together a self-published book of our illustrations, some other works and a few childhood pictures for our Grandmother’s 80th birthday this June 2013.
We wanted to incorporate works that reflect her importance to us on many levels, personal and professional. The book is called ‘The Romano Sisters’, each piece was given a title and a short descriptions in Finnish. There are also 2 Finnish poems that encapsulate how much we care for her.
Evelina Romano, my sister, is primarily a fashion designer who graduated from London College of Fashion in 2012, but also does freelance illustrations on the side. Have a look at more of her amazing works here :

Amnok Butterflies
I decided to use butterflies instead of human representations for the 'Amnok crossing', where instead of having two boys crossing the river to get past China's border and one of them gets shut, I'm using the Yellow and red butterflies instead.
As the Yellow butterfly has been shot and the red one flies away, the silhouettes of the boys appear surrounded by red, blood.
"I used to hate every kind of institution but being Mummy is an institution too. I’ll bind you with the ropes that once bound me! I am that woman and the governor-general. Kill Mummy, then, dear!”
I've been watching the 1984 film based on George Orwell's novel 1984. There were some frightening similarities with the North Korean regime in material like tourists footage and anti-western propaganda. The ideas of human control and the watching eye are similar of the ones in the country of whispers.
Despite being quite a tedious way of working (cutting out and sticking letter on a different background), the effect is nice and takes me one step closer to 60seconds...

The transformation from being a woman, to being a mother and therefor becoming just as much an institution as the military.
Tegels
"The hidden movements and melodies of street tiles.
Tiles is an animation made of a large photographic collection of street tiles. By viewing this collection of photographs as a sequence, different movements and processes become visible within the frame of the tiles. Both music and animation are trying to find a balance between a thought-out arrangement and an arrangement of ‘chance’ deriving directly from the tiles."
I wish I'd thought of doing something like this for my animation..
idea generation for the 'Amnok crossing'
Introduction
the frame rate is 10fps, I think I'll slow it down to maybe 8fps so it'll be less 'charlie chaplin'ey and so the viewer can fully embrace the colours and see each one appear.
Kim Il Sung's infamous 'adjustable desk'
These frames turned out to be more hassle than useful, I did them in the very beginning of the project as a tester and to experiment with colouring book ideas. These were all photographed as opposed to scanned so the quality of colour and the mark-making is different, the images were huge and in portrait, unlike anything else in the animation.
I think the hardest bit was having to change the creative, thinking and working processes to fit stop-frame animation. Documenting is so important in stop-frame animation, and because my skills in Photoshop and After-effects are a work in progress, there were some mistakes in the making process that were irrevocable with my editing skills.
Mt Paektu and the Red Sun Rising
In the previous Narrative unit I challenged myself to do some landscape drawings and investigations about space, I would have liked to incorporate more textural sets of frames in the animation as well. In the last week of editing I realised I had been working in portrait as well as in landscape and struggled with incorporating portrait format drawings in the animation, so this Mount Paektu drawing with the Red sun rising doesn't appear.
The Red Sun rising works effectively in the set of drawings, so I decided to incorporate in some other way into the animation
