While there's really no disputing the outright stupidity of claiming to have been a reincarnated mythical creature, it is perhaps a little hasty to label it insane. Rather, it seems more like a whole lot of wishful thinking -- claimants would really like it to be true, even though deep down they know it's not. So they talk about it a lot. Endlessly, if given the chance, and they defend their right to do just such a thing. It's a classic scenario: If you lie loud and long enough, eventually the volume at which you are bullshitting will take precedence over the fact that you are, in fact, bullshitting. If the preceding description sounds oddly specific, as though it were of something that is already happening, there's a damn good reason for that: It is.

For the record, I'm about as far away from otherkin as one can get, but I used to be one, which gives me a rather strange perspective on the phenomenon. One of these days, I swear I'm going to write a book on it.

For now I'll just add to what others have said. First, it's interesting to note that otherkin is very closely related to Pan-Indianism and New Age totemism. The otherkin types that seem to crop up in the vast majority are animals (mythical or otherwise) that traditionally symbolize desirable qualities, assigned over the years by human folklore rather than observable animal behavior. So it's not surprising that Wolf (Kipling), Coyote (Plains Indians), Fox (Japanese folklore), etc. are common otherkin types for people to "discover" in themselves. In fact, one of the commonly accepted ways to determine one's otherkin species is the question, "what's your favorite animal (although it is usually phrased 'what animal are you particularly drawn to')?" It will almost always be an animal (mythic or mundane) that is powerful, intelligent, sneaky, beautiful, beloved, or otherwise at the top of the food chain. After more than ten years of observing this phenomenon on the Internets, I've met several dozen fox-kin, but never a beetle-kin. And invariably after a few years of one "type," an otherkin will discover a new type in themselves. I'll leave the reader to determine the psychological implications of this. Otherkin as a group exhibit a high instance of emotional turmoil, from depression and self-mutilation to self-diagnosed MPD/DID. Many are not particularly social or do not fit in with "normal people." Some are highly functional beings with nothing in the way of emotional problems. Connection does not imply causation.

I once heard a psychologist speculate on the origin of furry/otherkin; the phenomenon is only a few decades old (although arguably some form of it has been around longer; see animal totemism cropping up in societies without a shamanic tradition). He believed that of all things, anthropomorphic cartoons that this generation grew up with (usually as latchkey kids with a minimal amount of socialization outside of school) provided surrogate role models that children were extremely likely to adopt in the absence of working parents or friends in the "in-crowd." These animal cartoons (found in Disney films and daytime cartoons as a staple of the 80's and 90's) also reinforce the traditional symbolism and folklore of the animals portrayed, which (he felt) left children to put the animal up on a pedestal and strive to be more like it.

This cartoon theory may sound strange, but if you take a look at furry/otherkin artwork, you'll notice that it tends to gravitate toward the Disney style (think Lion King). Much of it is heavily influenced by anime/manga, another medium known for anthropomorphization in nonhuman characters.

What is your opinion of me, if I may ask? When I first saw the article, I assumed you were a non kin hater, but then I read your blog and realized you were kin.

I currently don't feel like detailing my opinions of you.

I am not otherkin and I don't know where you got that impression. My blog here and the associated Twitter too deal almost exclusively with otherkin and related phenomena, yes. I'm sure that will bother some people since I'm not kin myself, but I won't appreciate being dismissed as a "hater".

While it may have been their intention to demonstrate the ridiculousness of transethnics, otherkins, “multiple systems,” and other misappropriations of social justice, not everyone who read their story engaged with it that way.

Some bloggers, like Free Northerner, saw this as an opportunity to equate transethnics and transabled with transgendered people.

“What is fundamentally different between a man who thinks he’s a woman and a caucasion who thinks he’s black?

How is the transgender person who wants to mutilate himself because he thinks he’s a woman when biologically he’s not, different from the able-bodied person who want to mutilate himself because he thinks he’s disabled, when biologically he’s not?

It’s logically contradictory.”

Is this what you wanted?

If you have compared being transgender to being otherkin (whether you’re “trans*” yourself or not, completely irrelevant tbh) (not even talking about the oppression/mistreatment here, just the condition) in order to make the otherkin part look more legitimate — all you’ve really done is tried to bring transgender people as a group down to the otherkin level. Congratulations, I hope you’re proud.

Go read that Free Northerner post in its entirety, and revel in the fact that you supported these comparisons.

if you’re going to attack the self-delusions or abnormalities of another group, make sure that they are not exactly the same as the self-delusions and abnormalities you have spent your life defending. It just looks ridiculous.

(The Northerner is criticizing transgender-supporting bloggers who have criticized otherkin/transethnics/etc. He’s saying that if you call bullshit on transethnics and so on then logic demands you call bullshit on transgenderism too. And he’s not the only person who thinks like that.)

You hurt the people you claimed to be helping.

You forced a comparison we didn’t want to make in the first place and now it’s getting talked about at a public level.

Which is funny because I’ve pretty much always said the people comparing trans invdividuals to otherkin are the transphobic asshats. (“IF you can change your gender why not your species?”)

I hope you're not agreeing with me, because if you are then you misunderstood the point, or maybe you're very deliberately twisting it around.

I'm not blaming the Koyangi group, trolls gonna troll. I mean sure, their actions deserve some criticism, but I haven't gotten into that, it's a whole another thing.

If you honestly haven't noticed, there are plenty of non-trolls in the 'kin community who make these comparisons (I'm going to repeat myself: it counts even if they're trans* and only comparing the condition not the outside mistreatment), I'm saying that THEY ARE THE PROBLEM.
