Will's painting (as comics), drawn 10 years later ♥
Will as the 'False Thessalhydra/Radio Tower'
Explained using colour theory (hinted by a painting in the show!)
A user on reddit spotted this painting in Nancy's room in S4:
The Singer, 1903 by Wassily Kandinsky (reminds me of the singer during Hopper's proposal)
Couldn't help but notice Henry resembles this artist:
Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian painter & art theorist widely credited with creating the first pure abstract paintings in Western art. He had the condition “synesthesia” where he could hear colours & compared painting to composing music.
Hearing colours is a kind of power isn't it?
He was so moved by colour & music that in 1911 he founded Der Blaue Reiter: an avant-garde group in Munich, aiming to 'express spiritual truths through art'. He was notoriously anti-materialist in a growingly commercial society.
Tell me this isn’t something Henry would say...... "the Mind-
And then...I saw his painting: The Blue Rider (1903):
Dragon of materialism you say? Autumn landscape end of S5?
Kandinsky was OBSESSED with the colours blue & yellow. One of his most famous paintings is Yellow-Red-Blue (1925):
They are primary colours, yes. But here's the strongest pair we know:
Red you say? To break apart blue and yellow?? LIKE ALL THE RED IN S5? I think anytime red appears - it symbolically represents corrupting/blocking the signals between everyone - especially them.
This is why Will can't receive signals from Mike. He's blocking them.
Remember this?
Will has been 'painting the illusion' for a long time. Just read this quote by Kandinsky:
Will is the artist, using colour & sound to cause vibrations in the soul. A corrupt frequency & illusion. Will is the False Thessalhydra:
And he's been using the WSQK to constantly broadcast the illusion like an infection. It's a frequency, invisible to the naked eye. Just like the 'Mindsong' of the False Thessalhydra:
But this can't be done without the help of the Dungeon Master:
Anyone else felt gaslit when S5 ended? Mike knows something is wrong. He's been trying to leave clues, signalling people to WAKE UP. But his signals keep getting blocked. He fails. In the end HE ALSO FORGETS.
Green symbolises Mike's hidden feelings. Will can't see it.
But how can Mike stop Will's corrupt frequency? Well 🏳️🌈:
It's been established that music, memories & touch involving Mike have broken Will out of his possession multiple times. Like Max said, music isn't the only way home, and she's right.
But Mike can't do this alone. He will need everyone's help, especially El's.
There is a scientific theory relating to this! It's implied Will is connected to Hawkins Lab/Rainbow Room. It's very possible he really is El's twin of sorts:
Alternative theory: Like Robin said, Will could just be the 'receiver' for Vecna (or the Lab or the False Thessalhydra) and he's just helping broadcast the signal/infection.
Important: Kandinsky was inspired by 7 Principles of Theosophy:
(it was a 7 lol)
Kandinsky used theosophical concepts to paint the bridge between the spiritual & material worlds. DnD lore also draws from theosophical stories. Eg: The Great Wheel Cosmology & The Planes of Existence. (eg: Astral, Material, & Elemental Planes).
The missing element is love (or as Hopper says, a missing piece of the puzzle).
This is why music alone isn't enough. Will needs music, touch, voice, sound, memories & love - everything that makes him human. It needs to transcend all planes in time.
Love Wins!
"You never know the ending until it's all sung through" 💙💛
wait a damn minute...
if the giant X gate cut through every death location it cut right through lovers lake...
and the tunnels went completely around lovers lake...
and the party used the tunnels to travel without the military knowing... why didn't they use the tunnels to access the upside down?

Her personal choice
- Watching: Mona Lisa Smile with Julia Roberts
In the film, Julia Stiles plays Joan Brandwyn, a bright young woman who dreams of becoming a lawyer and who is enrolled in pre-law. Katherine Watson, her art history teacher played by Julia Roberts, encourages her to apply to Yale, as they keep a spot open for a woman from Wellesley College. After she helps her fill the application form, Joan is accepted at Yale, but she is hesitant to tell Katherine Watson. Indeed, she hopes to get a proposal from her boyfriend, and she think mentioning her acceptation in a law course might jeopardise it (this idea is whispered to her by Betty Warren).
Katherine Watson learns of Joan’s acceptance at Yale while discussing with her boyfriend during a dance at Betty Warren’s wedding. There, the boy states that Joan will always have the acceptance letter as an achievement (as if she should be satisfied with just her potential); but that as he as been accepted to Penn University and they have become engaged, her attending Yale will not do. Indeed, how could she then make sure that he “has dinner on the table by five”? I rolled my eyes very hard at that point; Julia Roberts looked perfectly livid.
She goes to Joan’s home the next week, with different brochures about law courses she could attend closer to Penn University, so that she can both “bake her cake and eat it too”. But there, she finds Joan already married, having eloped during the week-end, and set on being a housewife. Realising that she has misjudged the situation, Katherine leaves the house but Joan follows her on the porch. The following discussion ensues (Julia Roberts’ lines are in parenthesis and italicized).
“It was my choice. Not to go. He would have supported it. (But you don’t have to choose.) No, I have to. I want a home, I want a family. It’s not something I’ll sacrifice. (No one’s asking you to sacrifice that, Joan. I just want you to understand that you can do both.) Do you think I’ll wake up one morning and regret not being a lawyer? (Yes, I’m afraid that you will.) Not as much as I’d regret not having a family. Not being there to raise them. I know exactly what I’m doing and it doesn’t make me any less smart. [pause] This must seem terrible to you. (I didn’t say that. I —) Sure you did. You always do. You stand in class and tell us to look beyond the image, but you don’t. To you a housewife is someone who sold her soul for a centre hall colonial. She has no depth, no intellect, no interests. [pause] You’re the one who said I could do anything I wanted. This is what I want.”
Katherine then smiles, hugs her and leaves her with a “Congratulations. Be happy.” I find several issues with the way this conversation goes and how it is framed.
First, the contents of Joan’s reasoning. She asserts that she wants a home and a family, and she’s not ready to sacrifice this dream for her own education or for the chance at a fulfilling occupation. On one hand, I admire her selflessness and commitment. I often find issue with women who think that they can ‘have it all’, not because they don’t deserve all, but because children are human beings that need constant attention and care to grow up healthy. I don’t agree that women should be able to toss their kids to a child-minder for the day while they work. If you want children, you should take care of them, and they require a lot of care. Can it seem like a prison then, this kind of commitment? Yes, but I have to reiterate, having children is a huge commitment. Do you want children or do you want a convenient token of your ‘success’ as a parent that will take care of you when you’re old and live your defunct dreams for you? Children, in an ideal world, would not get less than your all. I’m also not convinced that one person is enough, even working full-time at it, to raise a kid. If this was the case, women would have way less children and the world would surely be a better place.
However, as it is, and as it was, mothers were raising kids all alone with no break, no relief. Joan is bound to become that typical housewife described by Betty Friedan in The Feminine Mystique. Dissatisfied by her life, intellectually idle even as she is always labouring away for her family, subservient to a husband. There is an enormous difference between realising that children-raising entails a specific sort of extremely time-consuming commitment, and boxing yourself in with a husband for which you will slave away and for kids who will not carry your name and treat you as a maid. Joan claims that “This is what I want”, but is it really? Or is it something that has been thrust upon her in a misogynistic society? If from your first breath on earth you are told that your only hope at respectability and happiness (no matter how fake that happiness is under the circumstances) is to marry and have kids, of course you internalise it. That message is reinforced at every turn, no doubt by Joan’s parents, her extended family, her friends, the men she dates, the staff at her college, almost all pieces of media that she is exposed to, the whole of history, how can she resist? How could she want anything different than that?
She’s saying that it’s her choice, but in the world she lives in, it’s no choice at all. She doesn’t seem to understand the framework in which she is making her ‘decision’. It’s not enough to wish for something to be true for it to actually be. Joan is buying acceptance and a sense of respectability from her family, peers and acquaintances, but she’s also stabbing any hope of independence for herself through the heart. She’s giving in and going with the flow.
Second, the way Katherine reacts. She smiles and leaves Joan as she is, as if convinced by her little spiel. There is nothing revolutionary or feminist in the road Joan has embarked on, nothing that suggests that she has understood a little of what Katherine was talking about when she spoke of independence of mind and autonomy for women. The way Julia Robert’s character’s response is scripted suggest that everything is fine with Joan, she has made her choice and as such there is no way that it can be criticised (because she is a woman and whatever women decide ‘for themselves’ is fine, yay!). Or, in an even more depressing lighting, Katherine understands then that there is nothing she can say to make Joan realise how she’s building a cage for herself, and so she’d rather abandon her to the empty comfort of the illusion of happiness for a time. Either way, there is little to rejoice about. A character that was advocating for women’s liberation and independence folds at the first resistance from an entrenched misogynistic ideology. There is little that she can do all alone, for sure; change needs consciousness-raising on some scale; but she renounces extremely easily and apparently pays it no more mind.
So what we have is a character touted as admirable and undertoned as feminist while extolling the virtues of ‘choice feminism’ (which is no feminism at all, because we don’t make our decisions in a vacuum and because there is no women’s liberation in it), and another who seems to accept it all at face value. This movie is pretending at female independence to paint a rosy picture of the past, but none of us should be fooled. It was written by men, so no wonder there is underlaying misogyny.
cool detail i only just noticed
the baseball team billys dad tries to get him to play on is also the tigers. trying to get him to play for the mindflayer
they really went hard on this baseball = conformity, playing for the tigers = playing for the bad guys thing
also billys number is 2 not 3. because will is number 1.
somehow reluctantly, i still believe that the Duffers do not include stuff just because - everything has a meaning, and if it doesn't make sense now, it will make sense later. which is exactly why upon first viewing season 4, my brain worked overtime on deciphering why on earth they went out of their way to make the point that Eddie is a ... STANCY shipper??? here is my attempt of an answer, and an explanation on how this is could be useful when theorizing about byler, and conformity gate in general
personally, what i got from this part of the dialogue between Steve and Eddie in season four is the following: 1) it is very easy to get a wrong idea into someone's head (Steve waited no time to try and pursue Nancy after that)
2) what seems for Nancy as simply the right thing to do seems like insanity that could only be explained by love to others (it was hinted at season 4, but in season 5 we got a confirmation that Nancy has not loved Steve that way) now - what would happen if i replaced some names? would any familiar scenes come up to mind?
1) it is very easy to get a wrong idea into someone's head (MIKE waited no time to try and pursue EL after that[✓])
2) what seems for MIKE as simply the right thing to do seems like insanity that could only be explained by love to others (it was hinted in season 4 [✓], but in season 5 we got a confirmation that MIKE has not loved EL that way [✗]) what we get is an almost perfect parallel, ruined not by a contradiction, but by an omission of the topic altogether, by avoidance. but first, before i dive into what this could mean for CG and byler, i want to touch upon a question : why Steve? and why Eddie?
as for Steve - GA's golden boy is shown time and time again to be scarily in tune with his and others' emotions: he clocked Nancy not loving him, Vicky being into girls, Dustin's unhealthy coping mechanism and its source, even was aware that he didn't even want Nancy like that after a while. Hell, i would have bet that if not for Dustin getting in his head about how he should date ROBIN he would have clocked her too.
my point is: if an emotionally intelligent adult like Steve can be swayed into a romantic pursuit, what chance did a 12 year old MIKE have? as for Eddie - there is an overall consensus that Eddie is a queer coded character. by sticking to this perspective, the symbolism is clear : even queer characters are not immune to viewing things through heteronormative lenses and can misinterpret situations as romantic when they are not. now, how many times is this is this statement proven in canon? take Robin: she assumes Vickie is straight, then assumes Nancy is still into Steve, and finally concludes that every queer person has to get over their Tammy just to find their Vickie. (and honestly, are we even sure that Tammy was straight?) and who exactly has been learning everything they know about being queer from Robin this season?
sigh. it's bleak guys. in a way, all the queer characters are shown to accidently help conformity. (good thing it's just the actual conformity and not the physical manifestation of it in the show, right? right?????????????) anyway !! back to how it can play out in conformity gate scenario: we have yet to receive a definitive answer on whether MIKE loves EL or not, and it’s the narrative limbo we’ve occupied for two seasons now, a limbo that we'll be out of very soon (hopefully). and while i am 100% that it should and will be discussed in the near future, i can't decide on WHO will be having this conversation with mike. I do, however, have two my main candidates: it could be a confession of MIKE to LUCAS, a perfect full-circle moment, nodding back to the original conversation they had in season one. with Caleb and Finn teasing the importance of the Wheelclair dynamic this season, this feels like a good place for mike to finally drop the act. on the other hand, it could also be a much needed dialogue between EL and MIKE! my personal interpretation is that at least from mike's POV, he and el have not broke up officially, hence why the conversation in the void is the way it is. the guilt of being untruthful is killing him inside, and being honest about it could only do him (and her!)good. there is also a wonderful theory (I'm sorry but i sincerely can't remember by whom please lmk in the comments so i can credit) that suggests that EL and MIKE are those who have a heart to heart in the white goo room, and it truly fits like a glove!
that’s about it, honestly! i just wanted to share my two cents on why this seemingly random plot point was included and how it goes hand in hand with the theme of conformity in the show :
the truth is that sometimes we can’t help but to be conformed and conform others, at least to some extant. it is, however, our duty to fight back against that pressure whenever it is untrue to who we are, or else we and our loved ones will be the ones suffering from the consequences.
