the only thing I absolutely hate about the httyd movies is that every off screen woman is strong built, fat and muscular viking women, but every woman that is part of the main characters is skinny... & I see why Valka has to be thin (wouldn't make much sense for Hiccup to be a twig if both his parents were jacked) and Ruffnut and Tuffnut are twins. But Astrid?!
Both of Astrid's parents have been shown as broad shouldered warriors, but we couldn't possibly make the main characters love interest fat! Dear God no.
So they'd rather tell us that these
two Hoffersons (a renowned warrior family, so it's not like Astrid just dieted. The Hoffersons were literally known to go absolutely fucking feral on the battlefield) had THIS DAUGHTER?!
She is a teenage girl who is still growing. Girls in general can have a hard time putting on muscle but Astrid very clearly HAS some muscle defination. The twins and Hiccup are also on the skinny side. Plus, its a plot point that the village is short on food. If you consider the shows canon, The Hoffersons are not in good standing. So she might not have a lot of food available to her. Her parents probably have muscle and fat reserves built over from better times.
But After that? Unacceptable. She is a accomplished warrior AND the future chieftess. She should have food available to her. She isn't gaining height anymore. Teenage Astrid made up for her size with her agility , ferocity and sheer feral scrapines. Grown Astrid should be able to KNOCK A MAN DOWN. She should be able to body slam grown men.
Also, Astrid is supposed to be conventionally attractive IN-Universe. Berkians live close to the artic circle and until recently were food insecure . To them an attractive women should be thick and strong. Someone who can wrestle a sheep away from a Groncle and caary it while running uphill. A traditionally good looking women SHOULD BE FAT, so she can survive a proper devastating winter, while keeping her family warm.
Astrid should have a full figure like her mum, with thick thigh and arms. Hiccup would worship her.
I will never shy away from the word goon. goon is the only way to describe a particular type of henchman, lackey, or thug. look at these guys. they're goons.
i'm wondering what would happen if hiccup actually agreed to train dragons for some bad guy, bc the way hiccup trains them is by forming a bond, mutual respect, trust, meaning that dragon would never be loyal to the enemy, let alone take orders. so like, how would that even work? the dragons won't listen to anyone else, just hiccup, so it wouldn't do them any good. plus the love and loyalty of dragons has been proven to be stronger than fear, so they'd all go crazy if something happened to hiccup.
httyd 2 au where hiccup is captured to train dragons for drago bludfist, but while hiccup acts like he's broken down and defeated, he's stealing drago's entire dragon army out from under his nose. drago tries to take a swing at hiccup with his bullhook and three hundred furious dragons attack him.

Regular headcanons:
They are extensive, from his toes up to midway his back and all around his legs.
They ranged from first degree all the way to one fourth degree burn.
The fourth degree is the reason why Hiccup lost his leg. (It went down to his bone and Toothless did bite down on it at first.)
Hiccup did suffer some minor internal injuries as well. (inside of mouth, nose and throat essentially, from the heat and the smoke)
They took months to heal, but at the latter half, when they begin to scar, Hiccup just wrapped himself up and went outside. Sick and tired and refusing to stay indoors a day longer. This was with Snoggletog around the corner.
This did reopen some wounds.
They need daily care even when healed and Hiccup learns to incorporate it into his morning routine. (which involves massages and stretches and a healing salve Gothi makes for him. Fishlegs makes it for him on Dragon's Edge.) It's one of the few things he never forgets.
Until Viggo lives rent-free in his brain and he can forget in favor of getting more work done on the Edge. Which backfires quite quickly.
Hiccup's incredible flexibility is in part because he might be hypermobile since birth, but also because of Hiccup's hypervigilance with his burn scars and dragon riding.
His pain tolerance is high. "Would set his own broken bone if they let him" high.
This makes him misjudge any injuries he might get afterwards because they aren't "so bad" compared to his injuries after the Red Death.
Longer trips away from home can be horrendous on his body because it's harder to go through his morning routine. He gets stiffer and his muscles, but mostly his joints, are more painful with each passing day.
He gets much stiffer during the winter months, especially during devastating winter. His friends can not see him come out of the house for days when it's especially bad.
As chief, Hiccup tries to push through during Devastating Winter, but it ends up backfiring and putting him in worse health when it does.
Astrid has to take over completely on these days.
They make him incredibly self-conscious and it takes him until well into RttE before he entrusts the other Dragon Riders with his scars.
In a time with no sedatives, alcohol was used to "keep him under" as they initially treated Hiccup's injuries on Dragon Island and later during his amputation. Hiccup was fed so drunk he doesn't fully remember these instances, but it has left him with a hatred for the smell and taste of wine.
Doesn't drink wine as a result, even Berk's mead is on thin ice.
Being surrounded by too many people too closely (think when people swarm him in GotNF) can trigger flashbacks to his initial wound care on Dragon Island and his later amputation when people crowded and surrounded him as they used field medicine on him.
He used to have a reccuring nightmare of burning alive that lessens in frequency as he grows older, though it never goes away completely.
There are periods, especially around the anniversary of the Red Death's defeat, that Hiccup can be incredibly touch averse. Because of his recovery and because of how sensitive his skin can still feel.
The Red Death is about the only enemy Hiccup does not ever regret killing for a multitude of reasons, his burns being one of them.
When he gets older it does become harder to take care of himself and the routine he sticks to will work less and less.
Legs feel weirdly smooth in most places and are hairless. No freckles where he was burned either.
They can be overly sensitive in some places and completely numb to sensations in others, it depends on how deep the burns went.
The sole of his remaining foot is entirely sensationless (minus pressure, which he still experiences)
On his worser days, Hiccup does require help with a lot of things.
Hiccup has to work through some nerves first before getting into a hot bath.
His hair got singed much shorter than it already was, leading to Hiccup growing it a little longer.
The People Around Him Headcanons:
When tutoring under Gothi, Fishlegs takes a special interest in how to treat burns and care for their scars.
Astrid, Toothless and Stoick help him be okay with his scars.
The Dragon Riders don't realize the true extent of his scars until RttE, when bathing/swimming with each other becomes a more regular thing.
RttE, the Dragon Riders learn pretty quickly to read the signs when Hiccup is having a bad pain day and how severe, because Stoick is no longer there to act as a buffer between his son and the outside world.
Stoick gets his son into woodworking to pass the time when his recovery leaves him with very little to do. No full furniture, but tiny sculptures like the duck. Hiccup doesn't pick up a passion for it, but does occasionally do some woodwork when he suffers a bout of pain and can't move much. Especially after Stoick's passing.
The twins and Astrid have stopped idolizing scars pretty quickly after Hiccup's injury, though Snotlout took much longer.
Toothless is scared of Hiccup getting burned again. Part of the reason why he immediately retreated in the first Heather Report part when Hiccup's sleeve caught on fire.
When Heather learns about Hiccup's burns, she struggles not to treat him differently. Likewise, Eret might've wanted to help out a little bit too much after he found out about them.
Viggo's sources have told him about Hiccup's scars.
Ryker would respect Hiccup more for "earning" some scars if he knew about them.
Modern AU Headcanons:
Would probably be wearing compression clothes as the scarring forms.
Despises hospitals and hospital-like environments.
Goes to the doctor less than he probably should because of this.
Grows more sensitive towards needles because of his extended hospital stay. Never outright afraid, but they do make him nervous and trigger him.
Missed a whole school year and had to be held back a year, meaning he graduated with Fishlegs and the twins rather than Astrid and Snotlout.
Bullied for the compression clothes he had to wear. (which his friends put a stop to whenever it occured in front of them.)
Physical therapy. Lots of it.
NSFW headcanons:
Hiccup does have some minor deformities in more intimate regions as well. Like patchy pubes and fused skin.
This made sex with Astrid (or anyone for that matter 👀) incredibly hard at first because it meant exposing the part of himself he considers the ugliest. Astrid helps him move past it.
I hate when people make out Hiccup's bullying to be way worse than it was.
Like no they were not beating him up every day be so fr, they were mostly just ignoring him. And when they were making fun of him it was mostly when he messed something up.
Snotlout was NOT actively going out of his way to ruin his day, i seriously don't think he cared that much.
Book Snotlout, sure. He was THE WORST. But movie Snotlout was not doing all that.
As for the others Astrid and Fishlegs were pretty much just not getting involved and the twins probably didn't think of it much because they are idiots so Snotlout is the only one there i would really call a bully and you have only Spitelout to blame for his behavior.
I'm not trying to say that Hiccup being outcasted his whole childhood "wasn't that bad" but let's not villainize a bunch of kids who didn't want to be friends with a guy who all the adults in the village criticized all the time.
The entire point of the first movie is that when Stoick and all the other adults didn't listen to Hiccup and went for the nest anyway, the gang was ON HIS SIDE.
They listened to him and trusted him to lead them to fight the red death after they saw what he did in the Arena even though he was disowned at the time. That was the first time they thought for themselves and chose to fight by Hiccup's side even though their parents would probably disapprove of it.
If that had gone wrong and Stoick hadn't regreted what he said and decided to banish Hiccup anyway they would have been banished with him.
So no, they didn't "switch up" they thought for themselves and broke the cycle of violence which is like the whole point of the movie, the new generation changing the world.

my headcanon is that he has A LOT of nasty scars from the red death fight. his people saw them as the symbol of his victory but everytime he looks at them he just remembers the sheer dread of almost dying, his mind filling with "what ifs".
he may have gotten used to his leg, but the burn marks were another story entirely. he almost never talks about them and like to keep it hidden under clothes most of the time.

Okay, but its funnier and more tragic if they are both still somehow cousins.
—Hiccup showing up to that call, knowing the kind of destructive spiral Snotlout is in. He is going to kill himself and destroy everything around him. The police want to shoot him. Hiccup walks in knowing he has to try to save him— but also that he might have to put him down
—Does Snotlout know he is fighting family?
—On the funnier end... The entire office has bets if these two have an underlying history or if it's just their personalities that mesh that way.
—But these two have been like this since they were...FOUR. Sure the other things are true too but this is inter-generational bickering.
—Snotlout randomly drops Hiccup s allergic to dragonroot, and the entire office is on the conspiracy board for whether they are exes
— Also does he still end up missing a finger?? Or do we replace it Rtte tooth scene.
— Tho it would be pretty funny if Snotlout goes " Can't hit without your suit, can you?" And Hiccup just decks him

Astrid and Snotlout in the runaway au (as they're the most uncertain)
Astrid is the last one to leave Berk.
When thawfest rolls around, only these two are left. While Astrid is distant from the other teens, she is suddenly fat more determined not to die like her peers, pushing herself harder than ever. In contrast, Snotlout is mourning his cousin, and is forced to spend more time with his father, which in turn results in more of Spitelout Spitelouting at him.
Astrid wins Thawfest.
Spitelout reacts accordingly, and takes Snotlout camping. Once theyre an island nice and far from Berk, he packs his things, informs Snotlout that he's no longer a Jorgenson, tells him to not come back to Berk or ever show his face to anyone whose family lives on Berk, and leaves. Berk does not mourn the boy who died on a camping trip with his father.
Snotlout manages to survive alright on his own, taken in by Hookfang as his hatchling without his consent. While initially terrified and fairly certain that he's just being fattened up, he eventually begins to realise just what his father did and what hookfang is doing.
So, he follows instructions, just like he always has for his father. He flies off past the great beyond with his new dragon friend, eventually making a name for himself as Ulgerthorpe, trading dragon scales, and teeth, and shed spikes and-
He finds the fireworm queen, and realises that Hookfang was not a one-off empathy feeling dragon. He stops dealing in dragon bits, and begins to burn down and kill off any of the hunters he can find.
Upon getting chased down by Hiccup nd the twins, he semi-unwillingly teams up with them. He's still feeling betrayed hy his father, but when he eventually begins to come out of his shell (having taken on the persona of being aloof, spoiled, and utterly uncaring about anything like he is in rob/dob, instead of the "makes fun but typically silent" persona he has in httyd1).
Astrid leaves only when the others have all left. The flightmare comes to berk, and she leaves to hunt it down. She ends up accidentally befriending stormfly along the way, and the two end up hunting the flightmare for months before she finally slays it.
Ashamed of her relationship with her enemy, she decides to make it up by taking down the nest. Though weeks of sneaking through the nest, she manages to learn about the red death, and after a week long battle (think of her behaviour in the Rtte episode where its just her and tuff, aided by stormfly recruiting dragons for help), she manages to slay the red death.
The dragons take her in, and unwilling to accidentally smite down her village, she takes her flock away from Berk. She comes to realise that Hiccup was right about dragons, though she never trusts any of them aside from Stormfly.
She becomes a liberator for dragons, though once away from berk she shoos them off. She is not an ally of dragons, no quite, but she refuses to let the innocent be hurt. She is an impartial judge, in her own hating everyone way.
When she finds the riders, she quickly realises that they are not the wrong cause, and joins them.
