Once it was discovered just how much whistles could affect the zombies nearly every runner was given one. While some just carried them in a pocket or their bag, runner Five decided to tie some old string around it and keep it as a necklace. Some days they didn’t use it because of the sensory issues it would cause, but other days…
“-and you turn this part here to close it back up,” Edd finished explaining. Five sat with Molly on their lap, watching as he turned one of the pieces. “You get all that?” Five brought the whistle up to their lips and gave a short confirmation blow which made Molly start giggling. Just as Edd finished up and turned back to them, Sarah walked up.
“There you are Five.” Five gave two short blows in greeting, turning away slightly so Molly wouldn’t grab the whistle. “I'm afraid I have to borrow you away from Edd and Miss Molly there.” Five glanced at her slightly confused before handing Molly to Edd. “Don’t worry, you’re not in trouble or anything,” Sarah reassured as the pair walked. “I just have a bit of a surprise for you.”
They walked to one of the main courtyards and Five saw Sam, Janine, Eugene, and Jack waiting there, with Sam holding a box in his hands. Five leaned their head to the side, watching them curiously.
“We’ve all noticed how hard you work around here Five and we wanted to-” Janine started before being cut off by Sam.
“We got you something Five!” Five smiled at the interruption before approaching the box.
After a glare at Sam, Janine continued. “Yes. If Mr. Yao could hold his excitement for a moment. All of us have noticed how much you appreciate that whistle there, so when Sarah found this out on a run we knew who to give it to.”
Sam opened the box to reveal a small whistle that had an engraving of a cat at one end. Five’s eyes lit up with excitement and they quickly took off their current one before carefully lifting the whistle from the box and putting it on. “Well? Don’t leave us in suspense. How does it sound?” Jack asked. Five slowly brought the whistle to their mouth before blowing on it softly. The sound it made was similar to a happy bird. Five trilled happily at the noise, making everyone grin.
“There you are Five! Your very own whistle.”
