So, in Eridian language, repeating something three times is an indicator of extreme emotion, like 'amaze amaze amaze' or 'happy happy happy.' And, logically, the number of repetitions indicates emphasis, so once is normal, two is emphasised, and three is extreme.

However, when Grace meets Rocky out in space in the book, Rocky replies 'happy happy happy happy.' Four repetitions. That little guy was overjoyed to see Grace again. More happy than when they found Taumoeba 85.

she/they Adrian supremacy btw. Not because I think the aliens would have gender - precisely the opposite in fact. I think Adrien was absolutely fascinated by Grace assigning Rocky gendered pronouns without thinking because they’re a scientist and humans are fascinating and so are their biases. I think Adrien spends like two years researching how gender and pronouns work in humans and decides for themselves that they like what she/they seems to mean to the aliens. They share some research at some point with Rocky, maybe wondering if Rocky wants to learn more or pick a different set of address terms, and Rocky literally could not care less. He likes what Grace calls him because it’s what Grace calls him. Adrian lets Grace know as a passing thing, like “isn’t it neat that such an alien concept to me can still carry compelling meaning, how wonderful the galaxy is” and Grace Immediately switches to using she/they for Adrian with the speed of a schoolteacher who had to fight tooth and nail for his students to be accepted. Adrian is surprised, but finds she really does like the gesture. It’s a sign that Grace thinks of them as a person, as someone worthy of recognition and acceptance and respect, with a being different than his own and equally worthwhile, even if she doesn’t quite Have A Gender the way a human would. And it means that she gets twice as many address terms as Rocky does, which makes him mad, which fills Adrian with smug satisfaction and joy

There are no "exact color" of pride flags.

I see more and more sites and posts talking about the exact hex codes for the lesbian flag, or the right purple for the ace one, and how it should be more or less saturated and I just want to say: pride flags were meant to be sewn in your kitchen. To be spraypainted and to be recognised.

There are no "exact colors" of pride flags because you should do them with what you have ! Nobody should care if you use a crimson red instead of a cherry red or whatever ! Be free ! wave your colors ! The colors you have !

Eva Stratt stuck in a time loop. She realizes it’s a time loop. She knows that she could do something to change events. No matter what she does the accident that kills DuBois and Shapiro still happens. No matter how much testing and training other candidates she does she still has to betray Grace. No matter how many times she tries to explain it to him, he still begs her not to send him to space. He still considers it the ultimate betrayal. Yao and Ilyukhina die on the way to Tao Ceti every time and there’s nothing Stratt can do to change that outcome. Grace will always find the solution to the Astrophage problem. He will always meet Rocky. He will always sacrifice his way home for Rocky. And Eva Stratt will always have to push him (betray him) so that he will go. She’s too stubborn to let the earth die just to save this one man. And every time she knows it will work and she also knows the consequences and she still does it because she has to.

Story time:

In middle school biology, we did an experiment. We were given yams, which we would sprout in cups of water. We then had to make hypotheses about how the yams would grow, based on descriptions of yam plants in our books, and make notes of our observations as they grew.

Here’s what was supposed to happen: we were supposed to see that the actual growth of the plant did not resemble our hypotheses. We were then supposed to figure out that these were, in fact, sweet potatoes.

What actually happened was that every single student in every single class lied in their notes so that their observations perfectly matched their hypotheses. See, everyone assumed the mismatch meant they had done something wrong in the process of growing the plant or that they had misunderstood the dichotomous key or the plant identification terminology. And, thanks to the wonders of a public school education, everyone assumed the wrong results would get us a failing grade. We were trying to pass. We didn’t want to get bitched out by the teacher. Curiosity, learning, science - that had nothing to do with why we were sitting in that classroom. So we all lied.

The teacher was furious. She tried to fail every student, but the administration stepped in and told her she wasn’t allowed to because a 100% fail rate is recognized as a failure of the teacher, not the class. It wasn’t even her fault, really, though her being a notorious hard-ass didn’t help. It was a failure of the entire educational system.

So whenever I see crap like Elizabeth Holmes’s blood test scam or pharmaceutical trials which are unable to be replicated or industry-funded research that reaches wildly unscientific conclusions, I just remember those fucking sweet potatoes. I remember that curiosity dies when people are just trying to give their superiors the “right” answers, so they can get the grade, get the job, get the paycheck. It’s not about truth when it’s about paying rent. There’s no scientific integrity if you can’t control for human desperation.
