2026 is off to a great start for reading. turns out if you read a lot of books for youths and genre fiction, you can get halfway through your annual reading goal in a mere thirty-one days.
the theme for february was apparently books about drow (and one buddhist text i found highly compelling.)
things slowed down a little in march.
and stayed slow for most of april, but it's picking back up! we remain staunchly fantasy-facing, however.
may became an impromptu discworld month, which was quite a nice way to spend a month.
If you aren't a transfeminist you aren't a feminist.
Transfeminism is the current wave of feminism. It is the only feminist analysis that builds off of all previous ones to actually analyze the social and material conditions of all women today in order to understand our oppression and provide a framework for effectively fighting against patriarchy.
And, of course, you can't liberate any group of women by leaving any of us behind. We are all in chains together. You can't free cis women without freeing trans women.
if i bring a book someplace it doesn't necessarily mean i want to read it mayb i just want to take her on a walk. Get her some fresh air and a change of scenery
controversial opinion! i think if you are not, yourself, transfeminine, your opinion on whether or not a portrayal of a "man in a dress" character or joke can be "reclaimed" or was "fair for its time" or is actually just a queer icon. does not matter.
the change from AD to CE feels really emblematic of how surface-level and meaningless the supposed secularization of the western world is
Common Era is definitely preferable over Anno Domini, if only because christ is no lord of mine, but it’s only less christianocentric in that it doesn’t overtly make reference to christ in its title. the benchmark is still the same. you’re still measuring when the common era began using the (supposed) birth of christ, separating history into “the period before jesus” and “the period after jesus”. this conception of history is no less defined by christianity than it was before, except that now it’s easier to ignore because you’ve draped it in a “secular”, “modern” veneer and done nothing to actually unpack the ways in which western society intrinsically centers christianity.
Has anyone noticed that translating poetry is not easy
It's kind of like if you were in unrequited love with the crossword puzzle
books
Every time the monthly "discourse" roles around as to whether consuming audio books counts as reading, I cannot help but think of the Odyssey, of the Iliad, of the Shakespearean plays. Works of art that have become solidified within Western Canon as some of the greatest pieces of literature we have. And all of them were mean to be heard, to be watched. Were crafted for it.
The Iliad and the Odyssey were meant to be listened to from the mouth of a bard, a lyre in his hand and a song on his tongue, as the smoke from the fires drowned out the rest of the world, the honey words transporting the audience into the story.
Shakespeare was meant to be watched. The actors bent over themselves, emotion pouring down their faces as the audience bumped shoulders with each other, breath held for the next act.
I love the written word, do not get that wrong. But we owe the written word to the oral tradition. To the bards and poets who passed down story after story, who kept them alive to the point where they could be written down and preserved. We owe it to performance. To the energy of the theater that found the plays that sparked electric in the peoples hearts, to the point of ensuring they would be around for generations to come.
Why disparage the performance of a story, when it might just be the most human thing we have? Why act like it is an inferior art form? I adore reading, but I also know that my favorite pieces of literature were meant to be heard.
The weirdest way to engage with fiction by far, in my opinion, is taking the "chronological order is strictly better always" approach to sprawling (video or tabletop) game settings and then insisting it's a good entry point. Like. You realize the creation myth of the world and the Ancient Precursor War lore aren't things people will care about unless they're already invested in the story, right?

i hate the word spicy can we bring back calling things erotic
The children's show villain is a figure who sadly is not seen outside the children's show. There are few stock characters who as succinctly declare, from sheer stage presence, "the world is unloveable and it is painful to live here; that which delights mankind is like ash on my tongue" without being too fucking whiny about it.
maladaptive suicidal ideation: "i'm going to kill myself"
productive, growth mindset: "i'm going to steal all the instruments from Musictown!"
hey so anyone else just, feel thin. sort of stretched. like butter scraped over too much bread. like you need a holiday. a very long holiday. and you don't expect you shall return? or is that just me and bilbo baggins
being friends with english majors is so fun you'll send a text like hey are you free for brunch and they'll respond with some shit like "haven't the faintest clue, my schedule is utterly fucked"
english majors so used to talking like 19th century british aristocracy they think this is a joke about busy schedules
the thing about nonfiction is you come out of it with several more books to put on your to be read list and it's only gonna branch out from there so really the only solution is to read every book in human history starting at the beginning
my favorite thing about the mystery genre is that we all accept the concept of "world famous detective" without hesitation even though that is absolutely not a real category of celebrity
WARNING do NOT start reading books and comics or watching movies or looking at art!!! you will start wanting to create art yourself. or god forbid. writing.
No but actually LMAO
