And unfortunately, it is these gentle wolves Who are the most dangerous ones of all.

THE WORD VAULT: Meander
MEANDER – Pronounced like mee-An-der, meander – as a verb – means to wander aimlessly (as in action or speech), or to take a winding or indirect course (as in a river or stream). As a noun, it means a winding path or course, or a roundabout journey.
This is one of those words that evoke images of some fairy tale character carelessly traipsing through the woods in some land far, far away. Shrek and his crew strolled. Hansel and Gretel walked. However, Little Red Riding Hood (not Amanda Seyfried, the original one) meandered.
Derived from the Ancient Greek, maíandros, and Greek Mythology, Meander was the patron deity of the winding Maeander River (now called Büyük Menderes in Southwestern Turkey) that drains into the Aegean Sea. Meander is the son of Oceanus, deity of the oceans and Tethys, mother of the chief. The word eventually shifted into the Latin maeander, meaning circuitous windings.
While some fairy tale characters may meander, the rest of us don’t have time. Instead, we walk, strut, saunter or amble along.
Here’s why.
