Dinner For Two || Alfie & Haley

He really was very happy in his friends company and the about of smiling and grinning he’d done so far that night was enough to show for it. “Deal,” he said and held up his glass once again to ‘cheers’ with hers before gulping the rest o it down and smiling again. “It really has. I know, I know, I’ve said it already but thanks again, Hales.”
She was thankful they were able to get together and do something like this. It was a very enjoyable evening and hopefully it would happen more often. “Good. I’m holding you to it,” she replied and raised her glass to mirror his actions. “You’re welcome and thank you too, Alfie.”

Haley smile back at him. She took a sip of her drink before continuing to eat herself. Alfie seemed to be enjoying the food which made her happy. “It really has been. It’s been too long. Let’s not go that long again, okay?”

“True,” she replied with a laugh of her own. Haley smiled at him before continuing eating. “I’m glad you liked it. Oh no need to worry. You’re not grossing me out at all. Just continue to enjoy your food. Please.”
Alfie grinned, “Okay good,” he replied and continue to eat the food on his plate, still really enjoying it, whilst wanting to eat quickly to grab some more. “It’s been really nice to catch up, Haley.”

Haley knew she was probably rambling about her family, but she couldn’t help herself. At least with Alfie, she did have to feel like she was being silly or anything. He would never laugh or make her feel embarrassed. He really was a great friend and she was thankful to have him in her life. “Oh definitely. It has been too long. It will be nice to just spend time together as a family,” she replied with a smile before nodding at his next statement. “I will do that.”
She let him get his food before she followed suit and filled her own plate. “No need for explanations. I made plenty so please eat up. You can even take some leftovers if we have any,” she told him. “Oh gosh. Now I’m nervous. I really hope the food lives up to your explanations,” she said nervously and watched him dig in before taking a bite of her own.
“The key word there is ‘if’,” Alfie pointed out with a laugh. He began eating the food, it was really good; “Haley, you don’t need to be, this food is amazing, I only hope I’m not eating gross in front of you now because that’d make me nervous.”

“I know and I promise I will. The family is doing great. Jamie is constantly growing and he’s really happy Nathan is home as am I. Yeah he was. He was at a camp. It lasted far too long in my opinion, but I’m just happy to have him home. The way news and gossip spreads through this town is crazy. It still means a lot, Alfie,” she replied with a bright smile.
“I hope so. I made it myself.”
Alfie sat contently, listening and smiling as he heard his friend talk about her family. Her motherly love was clearly evident in her voice and he could tell that both her boys meant the world to her. She’d been through a lot with them, he knew but she’d certainly done a good job. “It’ll be nice to be altogether again I bet,” he chirped in after a while. “Tell them I say hello won’t you?”
He started to pick out some food that was laid on the table and pile his plate up. He sheepishly grinned at Haley, “I like to eat,” he told her, chuckling, “and especially if it’s handmade. I must try some of Haley James Scott’s food and see if it’s as good as everything else she does,” he smiled and began tucking in almost as if he’d been saving himself up for this moment.

Haley just smiled brightly at him. “Aww thank you,” she replied. It meant a lot that he thought that. “I will. I promise. You’re right. Maybe I could. He just got home. So, I first want to enjoy time with him and Jamie. It’s been a while since we’ve all been together as a family. I know you’re not. Yeah it could. Thank you, Alfie.” It was nice to have someone that still believed in her. Of course she had Nathan, but this was different. For so long, she thought she had to give up her dreams, but maybe they were still in reach. “I definitely will. Thank you for being such a wonderful friend and for that much needed reminder.”
“I understand but it’s always something to just keep in the back of your mind. How are the family by the way? Nathan was away doing some basketball thing, right? Or at least that’s what I heard, you know how news travels around here, Haley. Honestly, it’s not problem, I’m just glad I can help every now and then,” he sincerely reassured her and smiled.
“This food looks really good, tuck in!”

“You did! I know I’ve said this, but I’m so proud of you,” she said with a smile. “Aww thank you. That means a lot to me. You really think so? I’ll try, but I have to take care of everyone else. My family comes first now. Maybe, but I’m not sure. I doubt I’ll ever have free time again. I also have to worry about the cafe too. Then I’ve been having to keep the house and everything while Nathan’s been away. Maybe one day I can do something for me. Hmm. That’s an idea. I might make a decent teacher. I still would have to go to school and get my degree, but maybe sometime in the future I could look into it.
“Yeah you’re right. I think we do. I can’t sit and wonder about what ifs and could beens. I have to continue to live in the moment now. Thanks, Alfie.”
Alfie thanked her again and took a gulp of his drink. “Yeah I do and a great one at that,” he told her, “I understand but just keep that in mind. I mean you never know, you and Nathan work well so maybe...if you really wanted to do something for yourself, like teaching, you could talk to him about it...I’m not trying to push you, though but it could be something to consider.” He had to acknowledge that Haley's circumstances were different to his own but he just wanted to encourage her as much as she had him. “If I can help in anyway...”

“You’re welcome, Alfie. I mean it. You put in the work and now your a graduate. Despite all you went through, you overcame it and achieved your goals. You really think so? Thank you! That means a lot,” she said with a smile. “Well I’m a working mother and only attending community college at the moment. Growing up,I thought I’d go away to my dream school and working on my degree to make the world a better place or something. Somewhere along the way all that changed. I wouldn’t change being married or having my son for anything. I just sometimes what would wonder if things were different,” she told him with a sigh. “It’s silly to wonder or think about what could have been. This is my life now and I’m making the most of it. I appreciate that. Well sometimes no new changes can be a good thing.”
"That I did!" Alfie thought as he listened to his friend’s complimentary and encouraging words. “Well, you’re welcome and for what it’s worth, Jamie has a great Mom. You’re already doing that, Haley by helping people like me but you will make sure to do something for yourself one day, won’t you? Maybe when Jamie’s older you could look into again, once you have some free time of course, I bet you and Nathan have been really busy with the lively little guy. Maybe you could teach? It sounds kinda predictable I know but I could see you being really good at it, Hales.”
“And you’re right about that but it’s not silly to wonder sometimes, I suspect will all do that sometimes, I know I do every now and then but if you continue living life how you have been, you’ll get along just fine.”
