Heyyyyyyyyyyyy sorry this took so long! Itâs past Halloween but itâs never too late for some seasonal adorableness!
Ethan peered into his plastic bucket. He could still see thebottom! That surely had to change! He looked back up as he felt a hand on hisshoulder, relaxing when he saw it was Tyler.
âAre you ready for the next house?â Tyler asked.
Ethan nodded eagerly. Before theyâd started heâd been prettynervous, but seeing that the first block of houses were nothing but smiles, hisuncertainty had drained away. He felt as light as a feather! He was Batmanafter all, he could do anything!
He put his bucket back to his side, letting it swing fromhis hand as he used his other to hold Tylerâs hand. Together, they walked up tothe next house.
âTrick or treat!â Ethan grinned behind his mask as he stuckout his bucket. The woman sitting on the porch gave him a gentle smile as shedropped the prizes into his bucket. The pair turned and walked back to thestreet.
âGet anything good?â Tyler smiled down at the boy.
âUhhhhâŚâ Ethan peered into his bucket in search of the newtreats. âGoooootttttt⌠a smarties an a lollipop!â
âOoh, those do sound good! I might have to steal some!âTyler teased.
âNo! Theyâre mines! I worked for âem! You didn!â Ethan heldhis bucket safely out of Tylerâs reach.
The tall man chuckled. âDonât worry, theyâre all yours,baby. I wouldnât dream of stealing from Batman.â
âYeah!â Ethan said. âRobin helps Batman, not steals.â
âOf course.â Tyler itched at the velcro of the cape he worearound his neck. His costume consisted of that and a mask; it was as much ofthe costume that Ethan had been able to convince him to wear.
They approached the next house, this one more extravagantlydecorated than any other on the block, full with gravestones and skeletonslittered across the yard. The person at the end of the walkway looked friendlyenough as the pair approached.
They were almostthere when there was a burst of movement from the bushes, accompanied by ashriek as a werewolf popped out. Well, a person dressed like a werewolf.
Ethan jumped, instantly latching onto Tyler, who had steppedin front of him as an instinct to protect. The person moved back into theirplace, as their goal had been accomplished, leaving the startled pair to takethe final steps to their destination. Ethan silently held out his bucket,letting the man drop in the candy without a word. They walked back down thepathway silently.
Once theyâd made it back to the street, they stopped. âEthan?âTyler put his arm on his shoulder. âAre you okay?â
Ethan didnât respond, the only noise coming from him weresniffles. Upon closer inspection, Tyler could see the tears falling behind hismask.
âShh, itâs okay, baby, youâre okay.â Tyler rubbed soothingcircles into his back. âAre you done for tonight?â
Ethanâs sniffled kicked up a notch as he nodded, burying hisface in Tylerâs chest. He was obviously disappointed. Â The taller man put a reassuring hand on Ethanâshead. âOkay, thatâs okay. Letâs just go home.â
They made it home quickly, Ethan plopping down on the couchthe minute they were inside. He curled in on himself and threw his mask to thefloor. âDidn get lotsa candy,â he sniffled.
âWell I have a little secret for you, Batman,â Tyler said,peeking in from the kitchen. He seemed to have caught Ethanâs interest. âI justmight have bought us a looot of candy!â He emerged holding a bowl filled withsweets (all peanut free, of course), hefting it high like a trophy.
Ethanâs eyes lit up. âYou did?â
Tyler nodded as he sat down next to him. âSure did! Just foryou. Well, us.â
âTank you, Daddy,â Ethan mumbled, wiping his face.
Tyler wrapped an arm around Ethanâs shoulders. âAnything foryou.â
And thus they spent the next few hours cuddling and consumingsweets, watching animated Halloween specials, a grand distraction from thespooks theyâd encountered earlier that night.
