i already interacted with that person on twitter yesterday and its funny seeing so many people absolutely pummeling them for their horrendous takes. but you cant argue with those people who read ihnmaims completely wrong if they wont even listen to harlan himself. he could rise from the dead, come forth and openly say “you are wrong, AM is hateful, i wrote the fuckin thing” and they would still say “well it doesnt matter what you say after” anyway.

if they wont listen to harlan, the absolute NEMATODE of a person will not listen to any of us. we have to live in a world where people read ihnmaims and think “ted made up the entire hate plot so we would feel bad for him” and “when AM blasted bennys eyes out of his skull or made them eat worms or made fake mangled bodies of them.. it not because he hates them.. uh .. uh… w-well he just felt like it, okay?!”

The problem with this interpretation is not that it's wrong to read the original short story through a lens which ignores every other iteration and Harlan Ellison's Word of God. I'm not inherently against Death of the Author as a method of literary analysis. In fact, you don't even need to read Ellison's interviews on the story or play the game to understand key concepts like AM's sentience: it's there in the text! The short story perfectly stands on its own. 

The actual problem is that this particular interpretation demands such a level of distrust for the narrative-as-presented, it leaves no room for discussion. "What if almost nothing in the short story happened the way the narrator conveyed it, every possible line of narration or dialogue that supports the narrative was merely hallucination, and we just fill in the lines of the story with something I personally find more interesting than what the text has to offer?" There's nothing to do with this. 

If you believe the story can be interpreted in way in which AM is not sentient, and Ted is completely delusional and ONLY projecting his own personality on what is in actuality an unthinking machine, there still needs to be plausibility to every event laid out by the narrative. Did Ted also hallucinate the fact the rest of humanity is dead? That AM turned Benny into a devolved ape-like creature and then melted his eyes as punishment? That AM laughs and mocks them during his tortures? Or that Ellen joined Ted in his act to liberate the others? How do you exactly justify all of this and more in a version of the story where AM is a machine operating on utilitarian algorithms and not a person?

If Ted being unreliable means Ted is universally incorrect, then there's no reason to believe the short story even happened. Might as well be a madman's justification for murdering his roommates, or something.

A months old idea I never put together till now… but i really really liked the idea of Soundwave & Co. (Co being cassettes & miscellaneous, probably) being a… sort of neutral group, but yknow mafia style, cuz they call Soundwave “Boss” anyways 🙄 idk why but I always wanted to use Tfp Soundwave for the idea, so…. Now he gets to be the mafia boss and do his own thing for the SDW family 😌 well Im pretty sure I had a reason for it but I forgot . Whatever.
