Rob talks here about how the war has changed Thomas and how the things that used to matter to him and that still matter to O'Brien, such as getting one up on Bates, seem small and inconsequential compared to the vast and seemingly unending misery and horror of the war.
i so wish we had seen explored the aftermath of the war and how it changed personal and societal relationships
instead of JF pressing the reset button and things more or less continuing as before
so much interesting fodder for a writer
and what does JF serve up?
endless Bates melodrama, second-hand plots from other shows; ridiculous, repetitive, and ultimately inconsequential story arcs; more Bates melodrama; unnecessary and poorly handled SA, and soup 😐
why and how does JF set up interesting characters and potential situations, and then veer off into the dullest of directions, again and again?
eg Denker could have been an interesting antagonist and shit-stirrer—but when Thomas bests her at the gambling den that's the end of it, apart from her being the one to bring the news of DA letting staff go...there could have been an interesting battle between the two, with Denker winkling out all of Thomas' secrets, and Thomas trying to defend himself without resorting back to his old ways...an interesting parallel to the all too brief conflict between him and O'Brien that resulted in The Jimmy Incident...
instead we got that grindingly stupid soup plot good god
what are your characters and plot set ups that could have been interesting but were never developed in favour of something dull and/or silly?
Just feeling soft Thomas today 🩵
Good news: if you’re currently laying around and not producing anything, you are a credit to your species.
It’s recently been found that even hive insects rest. Bees will play with colorful toys. Ants sleep for about 1 minute but they do it so frequently it amounts to a few hours per day. Even trees take breaks.
The only things that work without rest are machines; literally everything that lives requires rest.
EVERYTHING THAT LIVES REQUIRES REST. STOP JUDGING YOURSELF FOR NOT BEING A ROBOT.
robots require very frequent breaks! welding machines generally have it programmed in that they can’t run so long they melt themselves. ive overseen two different manufacturing robots now and each of them were fragile, finicky idiots that require constant maintenance and repair. they pause in between moves, in between jobs. you’re always keeping an eye on programming errors, on coolant levels, on heat. you’re always pulling bits of scrap out of joints, sweeping up debris, washing off nozzles and untangling hoses. and even then it snaps a chain and takes a whole morning’s vacation.
even robots need downtime.
My phone literally tells me to shut it off every so often to keep everything optimized and your laptop shouldn’t be running 24/7 or it starts to malfunction. Even machines need time to reboot, recover and rest. Everything that uses energy needs those moments of recovery and rest.
