Day 11: Malcolm X pt. 2
When asked “who killed Malcolm X?” fingers mistakenly point in the direction of The Nation Of Islam. It is a fact that when a lie is repeated often enough people will began to believe it to be true just by sheer repetition, even if there is evidence against it. Malcolm X joined the Nation of Islam after his siblings joined and told him about the Teachings of The Most Honorable Elijah when he was in prison. After Bro. Malcolm actually met the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, he got to work helping to propagate the NOI, becoming an assistant minister, traveling to Boston to briefly serve as a minister, then traveling to Philadelphia to help establish Temple No. 12. Eventually, the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad appointed Malcolm X to be the National Spokesperson for the Nation Of Islam. Around the same time Malcolm X was most popular in the NOI, the COINTELRPO was established by J. Edgar Hoover. The COINTELPRO was a series of covert and often illegal projects aimed at spying on, infiltrating, and destroying domestic organizations they considered a threat, which were mostly Black Empowerment Organizations. J. Edgar Hoover was afraid of a “messiah” rising to unify and electrify the militant Black Nationalist Movement.
Malcolm X was a contender as well as Martin Luther King Jr., Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture), and The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad to be the “messiah” they were afraid of. Some of the tactics the COINTELPRO used were discrediting targets through psychological warfare, planting false reports in the media, smearing through forged letters, harassment, wrongful imprisonment, extralegal violence, and assassination. J. Edgar Hoover had the NOI and The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad under surveillance for at least 20 to 25 years. A goal of the COINTELPRO was to prevent the youth from converting or joining on to Black nationalist movements and the Nation of Islam was quickly gaining popularity especially with Malcolm X being the charismatic National Spokesperson that he was. Bro. Malcolm’s appeal was, and is, strongest among Black Youth between the ages of 15 and 24. So, the COINTELPRO, like with Black Empowerment and Civil Rights movements, sent in agents to infiltrate the Nation of Islam. And like with the Black Panther Party, the COINTELPRO used techniques to create rifts and factions within the Nation itself believing it would “neutralize” the NOI’s effectiveness. There were schemes already in place to disrupt the Nation of Islam before Malcolm X left the Nation.
It is widely known that Malcolm X left the NOI because he heard of Elijah Muhammad having children by “teenage sectaries.” Also that he took a trip to the Holy City of Mecca and that’s where he had an “epiphany” that other races could be Muslim too. Some people bring up how he was silenced from speaking for 90 days after his remarks about the assassination of President J. F. Kennedy. This information that is believed to be true is heavily misleading and deceitful. And even though these are said to be some of the reasons he left the NOI, he said he would still teach The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s Teachings as he best understood it and he never spoke against the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s Teachings.
The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad instructed his followers and ministers not to make a comment about the death of John F. Kennedy in 1963. Malcolm X disobeyed that order during an interview and because of that, the media used that to delude the public against the NOI. The Muhammad Speaks newspaper sent a message of condolence saying that the Nation “mourned the loss of our president.” There are consequences for disobeying an instruction and Bro. Malcolm was prohibited from public speaking for 90 days. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad suspending Malcolm X was a protective move to keep Bro. Malcolm from harm since what he said could’ve sparked anger in those who loved President JFK. He wasn’t kicked out of the Nation, he was still a minister and was still in the Nation after his suspension days were up. It would have been the same with any minister at the time. During his suspension the FBI approached him, offering him money, to try to get information about the Nations activities saying that it would be of some benefit to the NOI if they could eliminated some people. Malcolm X, of course didn’t sell out.
The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad never taught that only Black people were Muslims. He just said it was the nature of the Original man. In prison after he first heard about the Nation, Bro. Malcolm studied books on Islam in the prison library. On behalf of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, Malcolm X traveled to the Holy City of Mecca and other Muslim countries, before 1964. He also studied countries before he visited them meaning he was fully aware of the reality of other races being Muslim.
Malcolm X was a Muslim, he read the Holy Qur’an and he knew of the Quranic law of polygamy. He knew that Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) had 9 wives. Malcolm X believed The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad was a Messenger of Allah (God) so he knew that his Teacher had started taking wives, and was willing to keep it a secret. He learned that one of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s wives was a woman he loved, Mother Evelyn and started having a hard time. He didn’t leave the Nation because of this or the domestic life of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad though. It was because of the COINTELPRO infiltrating and factions being created in the NOI. There were agents in the NOI making the lives of the members harder. They were trying to split Malcolm X from his teacher to make it easier to get at him, hence the FBI approaching him during his suspension because they thought he was “bitter” enough to get information out of him. The rumors that The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad fathered children out of wedlock and with teenage secretaries were lies told to discredit the leader of the Nation of Islam and what Malcolm X unfortunately chose to believe and spread to justify his slander against Elijah Muhammad. Some of The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s wives are alive today and some of his children have twitter accounts. Here is testimony from his family:
After Malcolm X was separated from his Teacher and started his own organization, the COINTELPRO went to work. A man named Gene Roberts had just finished his police exams when he got a call from his officials to go up to the police headquarters. They questioned him for awhile and then asked him about how he felt about Malcolm X. In response he said “He didn’t know that much about the man.” They told him to get in to Bro. Malcolm’s organization and get as close to him as he possibly could. The undercover cop soon became one of Bro. Malcolm’s trusted bodyguards. And the COINTELPRO had a man on the inside who could closely monitor the activities of Malcolm X. Gene Roberts recounted a meeting at the Audubon Ballroom, the week before Malcolm X was assassinated, saying he saw “what he thought…was a dress rehearsal for Malcolm’s impending assassination.”
Before February 21, 1965 there were 3 different attempts on Malcolm X’s life. And before Bro. Malcolm was assassinated, he sent out letters and phones calls to the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad apologizing to him and asking for forgiveness.
On February 21, 1965 Malcolm X was about to address the audience of the Audubon Ballroom when a commotion started. Before anyone knew what happened shots were fired from some individuals in the audience. Gene Roberts left his post and chased down one of those individuals. After he saw that the man was dealt with he went back into the Audubon Ballroom and gave mouth to mouth resuscitation to Bro. Malcolm who had an open chest wound. CPR is not supposed to be performed on an open chest wound victim. Malcolm X died on that stage. There was a memo in The COINTELPRO Papers, written by Ward Churchill and Jim Vander Wall, where the FBI actually takes credit for assassinating Malcolm X. It was also said in an accompanying January 22, 1969 memo where the Chicago SAC, Marlin Johnson, made it quite obvious that he views the murder of Malcolm X as something of a model for “successful” counterintelligence operations. After that memo Marlin Johnson went to oversee the assassinations of Fred Hampton and Mark Clark.
Malcolm X, The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, and Minister Louis Farrakhan.
Though in 1965 most of Bro. Malcolm’s admirers thought he was assassinated by the U.S. government, people today think that Minister Louis Farrakhan had a hand in his assassination. Fingers still pint in the direction of the Nation of Islam as a whole because of the fact that the men arrested for his assassinated were members of the NOI. But those men that were arrested were nowhere near the Audubon Ballroom during the time of his assassination. It wasn’t until Farrakhan started to rebuild the Nation in the late 70s and early 80s that these rumors were started to discredit Farrakhan and the Nation of Islam. But the government will do anything to stop the rise of a Black “messiah” who could unify and electrify the Black masses, especially Black youth, including discrediting targets through psychological warfare, planting false reports in the media, smearing through forged letters, harassment, wrongful imprisonment, extralegal violence, and assassination. Farrakhan’s 60 Minutes interview with Mike Wallace and Attallah Shabazz is used in support of this false rumor because he said he was “complicit” in his words and because he said that Malcolm X was worthy of death. When Malcolm X was a minister in the NOI, he taught the followers of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad what to say and how to respond to people who spoke against the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad which was to combat the lies against Elijah Muhammad. It was Malcolm X who taught the members of the Nation that people who spoke against the most Honorable Elijah Muhammad was worthy of death. When Malcolm X left the NOI, The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad’s orders were to leave Malcolm X alone. Malcolm X started publicly speaking foul against The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad, so Elijah Muhammad’s followers did what Bro. Malcolm taught them to do, which was defend the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad with words. When Farrakhan said those words he just followed the instructions Malcolm X gave him and defended their Teacher.
There is also the fact of the Malcolm X movie by Spike Lee and Autobiography of Malcolm X as told to Alex Haley. Written and directed by Spike Lee, the film Malcolm X was a dramatization of Bro. Malcolm’s life and shouldn’t be viewed as factual history. Professor Manning Marable wrote another biography about Malcolm X, called Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, spending 10 years researching for the book. He began his work by considering Alex Haley’s autobiography. In Professor Marable’s research he found that Alex Haley was already compromised by the FBI. Here are his words from an interview Professor Marable did for his book:
“Most people who read the autobiography perceive the narrative as a story that now millions of people know, and it was — it’s a story of human transformation, the powerful epiphany, Malcolm’s journey to Mecca, his renunciation of the Nation of Islam’s racial separatism, his embrace of universal humanity, of humanism that was articulated through Sunni Islam. Well, that’s the story everybody knows. But there’s a hidden history. You see, Malcolm and Haley collaborated to produce a magnificent narrative about the life of Malcolm X, but the two men had very different motives in coming together. Malcolm did — what Malcolm did not know is that back in 1962, a collaborator of Alex Haley, fellow named — a journalist named Alfred Balk had approached the F.B.I. regarding an article that he and Haley were writing together for The Saturday Evening Post, and the F.B.I. had an interest in castigating the Nation of Islam, and isolating it from the mainstream of Negro civil rights activity. So consequently, a deal was struck between Balk, Haley and the F.B.I. that the F.B.I. provided information to Balk and Haley in the construction of their article, and Balk was — Balk was really the interlocutor between the F.B.I. and the two writers in putting a spin on the article. The F.B.I. was very happy with the article they produced, which was entitled, “The Black Merchants of Hate,” that came out in early 1963. What’s significant about that piece is that that became the template for what evolved into the basic narrative structure of The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Over a period of about year-and-a-half, Malcolm and Haley agreed to work with each other. They met usually after a long business day that Malcolm put in very tired. He would get there at about — either at Haley’s apartment or they would meet at then Idyllwild Airport at a hotel, and Malcolm would be debriefed by Haley. He would talk, Haley would take notes. Malcolm had a habit of scribbling notes in small pieces of paper that Haley would surreptitiously pick up at the end of their discussions. Malcolm’s objective was actually to reingratiate himself within the Nation of Islam, that because he had emerged by the early 1960s as a very prominent figure outside of the N.O.I., there were critics within the organization that were saying to the patriarch of the N.O.I., the Honorable Elijah Mohammad, that Malcolm planned to take over the organization, which was not true. But nevertheless, Malcolm felt that if he could make a public — a prominent public statement to show his fidelity to the Honorable Elijah Mohammad that that might win him back in the good graces of the organization. But there were internal critics, sharp critics, who were very opposed to him, and who were very — some of them were members of Elijah Mohammad’s family, such as Herbert Mohammad, Raymond Shareef, who was the head of the Fruit of Islam, the brother-in-law of — the son-in-law of Elijah Mohammad. They isolated Malcolm X and kept him out of the newspaper of the organization Mohammad Speaks for over a year, which is kind of curious. He was the national spokesperson of the N.O.I., and he wasn’t represented in their own newspaper for over a year.
Haley’s objective was quite different. Haley was a republican. He was an integrationist. He was very opposed to black nationalism. His objective was to illustrate that the racial separatism of the N.O.I. was a kind of pathological or a kind of — it was the logical culmination of separatism and racial isolationism and exclusion. He wanted to show the negative aspects of the N.O.I.’s ideology, Yacub’s history, and all of the ramifications of racial separatism that he felt were negative, and that Malcolm, being as charismatic as he was, a very attractive figure, nevertheless, he embodied these kind of negative traits. Haley felt he could make a solid case in favor of racial integration by showing what was — to white America — what was the consequence of their support for racial separatism that would end up producing a kind of hate, the hate that hate produced, to use the phrase that Mike Wallace used in his 1959 documentary on the Nation of Islam. So, the two men for very different reasons came together. What is striking is that from almost from the very beginning of certainly by September and October of 1963, as the book was being constructed, that Haley was vetting — asking questions to the publisher and to the publisher’s attorney regarding many of the things that Malcolm was saying. He was worried that he would not have a book that would have the kind of sting that he wanted. He was also concerned, to use Haley’s phrase, about the purported anti-Semitism of Malcolm X, and so he began to rewrite words or passages in the book without Malcolm’s knowledge. And Haley, in his own — this is prior to emails — Haley had a tendency to write even more frequently and voluminously to his agents and his editors than he did putting pen to paper in his own books. So that one finds in Haley’s archives, or the archives of Anne Romaine, who was going to be his biographer until her tragic death in 1995, one finds a copious series of notes from Haley to his editors and attorneys regarding the construction of the autobiography itself. He wanted to steer the book to accomplish his political goals, as well as Malcolm’s goals.
He’s already envisioning the N.O.I. playing a role cooperatively with integrationist organizations. I believe that if we could see the chapters that are missing from the book, we would gain an understanding as to why perhaps — perhaps — the F.B.I., the C.I.A., the New York Police Department and others in law enforcement greatly feared what Malcolm X was about, because he was trying to build a broad — an unprecedented black coalition across the lines of black nationalism and integration. And in way, it presages 30 years ahead of time, the Million Man March.”
It was J. Edgar Hoover’s frustration that led him to to create the COINTELPRO. It was his fear of a Black “messiah” that led to the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Mark Clark, and Fred Hampton. It is falsehood mixed with truth that misleads. The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad was not a pedophile who fathered children out of wedlock with teenage secretaries. Malcolm X was assassinated by the COINTELPRO. Farrakhan had no part in the assassination of Malcolm X. These rumors were started by the COINTELPRO to discredit the works of the Nation Of Islam. Only because they feared a Black revolution.
