Introduction post!

hello everybody! this is me, @itsliterallyjustme's new side blog :)

I've encountered something called #studyblr here on this webbed side and since I myself struggle with keeping myself motivated and productive in my studies, I decided to hop in on the boat and join this idea.

a little about myself and what this blog is mainly going to be about:

I'm studying arts- and cultural history

I'm from Germany

this blog is about my experience as a student

yes I will infodumb about my researches here

my asks are always open if you have a question about me as a person or something related to my studies, as long as you're polite about it!

As you might have noticed, I really enjoy visiting the Mauritius huis in Den Haag. This time they have a beautiful exhibition about birds and their influence in art and the way we view the world. It is a really small exhibition but I loved the collection of objects. It really shows how much influence birds have on us. I was really surprised to see a drawing made by Leonardo da Vinci before my nose.

this is such a profoundly stupid thing to be mad about but. i periodically think about how banksy made one of my single favorite pieces of art of all time, and everything else he's ever done has sucked. man, how did you nail it once

It's this piece, titled The Banality of the Banality of Evil. Because on first glance, you're like. Yeah, okay, it's obvious what it's saying. Even nazis, even evil people can appreciate beauty, too. But then you learn its name, and suddenly the interpretation shifts a bit. The idea that evil is banal has in itself become banal. my first response to seeing a nazi on a bench is "oh it's about the banality of evil" and not "jesus christ there's a nazi on the bench."

and like. i dunno i think that's a really interesting way for a title to recontextualize a piece. it's finding nuance by tearing out the nuance you want to project onto it. it's not the greatest piece of art ever made, but i'd be lying if i said i didn't have a huge soft spot for it

Okay but I have to add to this

what I find really interesting is how the way this is drawn (especially considering who drew it) the art style seems extremely deliberate. This type of nostalgic landscape painting is very reminiscent of nazi art and specifically, Hitler's art.

Nazis were extremely judgmental of "entartete Kunst" (degenerate art). Bansky's usual work very well fall into this category! So for him to go for this style of painting in particular is another choice I find very interesting, because I can see some people react to this painting with some variation of "oh, I didn't know he could actually draw! I thought he is a hack but he is a real artist!" - and that is where they would agree with the Nazis.

I dunno I just find this piece very compelling

oh that is actually fascinating. in fact, to add on- a detail I omitted because I just kinda forgot to mention it. The reason there’s two signatures in the corner is because it was a painting in a thrift shop, Banksy adding the Nazi, and then returning it to the shop.

I think there’s something interesting about recognizing the lineage of this type of art and wanting to mess with it, subvert the intent, and explore the topic and legacy. It’s potent. I really like this piece

Spent 6h in thesis lab today, it was so fun :) The weather made it seem like spring rather than winter, and with the window open and the sunshine pouring right in - it's the (European) 8th floor after all - work was passing by in a heartbeat

Went for a walk, read a bit and just sat in my favourite chair. Never thought I'd have to relearn how to relax.

Work will get more stressful soon so I'll use the time until then to do nice things.

tips for those that also have a (mostly) unwritten essay due very soon?

library (very important)

airplane mode no contact with society

no google no browsing no nothing

save as pdf or even better print all the information / research / material you need

for breaks take a short walk = less chances of going on your phone or falling into an online black hole of three hours

sketch out the essay on paper then write it c'est tout

emotional support caffeine

Sappho and Phaon

The myth of Sappho and Phaon involves the ancient Greek poet Sappho and the mythical ferryman Phaon. According to the legend, Phaon was an ugly boatman who ferried the goddess Aphrodite across the sea without payment. In return, she gave him an ointment that made him young and beautiful, captivating all who saw him, including Sappho. Sappho became distraught when Phaon rejected her love and, in an attempt to cure her unrequited love, threw herself from the cliffs of Leucas.

Andromache Mourning over the Body of Hector

Description

Jacques-Louis David became a full Academician with Andromache Mourning Hector, which he presented on 23 August 1783, just in time for it to be shown at the Salon. The painting represents a scene from Homer's Iliad where Andromache grieves over the body of her husband Hector, who has been killed by Achilles in the Trojan War. The subject of a widow and a young child might have evoked personal memories for David; the fatherless Astyanax is shown trying to console his mother in the midst of her grief, and he appears to be about the same age as David was when his own father was killed.

I finally have found the red thread I need to follow and started writing on my bachelor's thesis.

currently dealing with unpleasant personal shit

using the distance and energy and putting it into my work

hanging out with supportive friends

not eating enough due to stress and emotional problems

every other day has been better than the last one

There are so many bugs flying into my room right now, it's a bit annoying... I hope they fly out again once the light is out. The spiders that already live here are enough for me, thank you.

Anyway. Studying. Well, I've been sick the past week and wasn't able to do anything. It made me depressed and having my period and a fight with my boyfriend at the same time didn't really help to make me feel less depressed. If anything, that made it worse.

However. I am feeling much better now, physically and mentally. So it's time to set my mind into a focus mode again and continue working on my bachelor's.

Yesterday I finished writing a chapter on my train ride to uni city. Today I have done nothing. I was unable to focus, because I haven't quite regained my appetite again after having been sick. Plus rapid weather and therefore mood changes made it difficult for me.

In the evening, after my self defence martial arts class, I was very motivated to do homework and then read sources for my thesis, yet I also noticed I'm quite hungry and should eat before bed. So I cooked a little meal and ate it which consumed all my energy and time for this evening.

I don't want to make this post any longer, so I'm finishing it off by saying, I hope tomorrow will be better.

21.06.2025 // voices echoing in my head

i continue to be terrible at this project management thing, but glad to have various spaces to work out from. transcribing, making notes, writing scraps and pieces, continuous emails and follow-ups. language is so difficult sometimes. the sense of not doing nearly enough haunts me constantly. already dreaming of my desk and croissant wheels, of walking everywhere.

Today was a good day. Even though I didn't study, I took the time to relax and do my self care beauty routine intentionally and focused.

Tomorrow I have uni again, I feel prepared since I've already done my homework on friday. Afterwards I am going to travel back to my hometown to help my mother with her preperations for her vacation.

It'll be difficult the next few weeks without her, since I will have to travel home more often and do additional tasks (like watering the plants, visiting the graveyard to water the plants there as well), but I am pretty sure I'll manage it.

I am not sure if I am going to be able to find a time and place to study or have the concentration for it, but I hope I'll at least get to do class homework on the train. I am also sad, that I will have to skip training next week as well. Being physically active has helped me stay focused so far.
