Slang Words for Cigarettes
Cigarettes have accumulated a variety of nicknames such as âsmokesâ, âbuttâ, âsquareâ (from the shape of the box), âcigsâ, âciggiesâ, âstogsâ, âstogiesâ, âstokesâ, âsnoutsâ, âtabsâ (especially in NE England), âlooseyâ (a single cigarette), âbackwardsâ, âbogeysâ, âbogesâ, âgortsâ, âciggy wiggy dillyâsâ, âdartsâ, ârefriesâ (already used cigarettes being relit and smoked), âstraightsâ (for factory rolled ones), âdugansâ (especially in NYC), âhairy ragsâ, âhausersticksâ, âjacksâ, âjoesâ (taken from the âCamel Joeâ, an old Camel Cigarettes mascot), âgritsâ, âgrantsâ (A common phrase used for asking someone for a cigarette is âCan you grant me a grant?â), âtailiesâ (short for âtailor madeâ, only in New Zealand) and âfagsâ (the term âfagâ is used more commonly in the United Kingdom and Australia, whereas in the United States and Canada, it is primarily a derogatory term for a male homosexual). Cigarettes have also attracted somewhat fatalistic nicknames related to their effect on the smokerâs health, such as âcoffin nailsâ, âcancer sticksâ, âlung dartsâ, âSweet cancerâ, âgaspersâ or even âblack lungsâ in terms of the âsmokerâ. In Australia, cigarettes are sometimes called âDoogansâ or âDurriesâ. A relatively new term emerged with the release of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones after Obi-Wan Kenobi was offered a âdeath stickâ in a nightclub, even though the âdeath sticksâ were some form of glowing liquid rather than anything smokable. Self-rolled cigarettes are called ârolliesâ, in the UK they are called âronniesâ, âprison rollsâ(which are particularly thin, as tobacco needs to be used sparingly) and âgyppo fagsâ.
