the funny thing is, because he hadn’t had much experience with children at the time, Sebastian had no idea what an enormous compliment this was. look at Ciel’s face, at how shy he looks as he stares at the ground and shakes his head - he’s embarrassed, unable to meet Sebastian’s gaze as he explains the name’s origin. the reason for this is: Ciel adored his dog, as most little boys do, and the fact that he would give Sebastian the same name says a lot about how he felt at the time, and what opinion he had of his new butler. how many times do you suppose Ciel’s dog protected him from some threat, real or imagined? how many times had that dog slept at the foot of Ciel’s bed to ensure his little charge slept soundly and safely? (headcanon: Vincent and Rachael bought the dog for Ciel after the third time the child had come into their room after a nightmare.) that dog would have been Ciel’s bodyguard, disguised as a friendly pet and playmate that wouldn’t frighten the boy or let him know just how much danger he was in 24/7, thus sparing him a great deal of anxiety and fear - and loneliness, as well.

the demon is obviously pleased when asked what his name is; he’s being presented with the opportunity to seal the contract with a magic word, the name that will make him who he is in this life - and Ciel gives him the very best name he can think of: the name of his protector, his best friend, his favorite playmate, his beloved pet.

and Sebastian, having no knowledge of how children think and having a low opinion of dogs, is deeply insulted - thus coloring his perception of Ciel as a “brat” from then on.

Is it the blood sent? the worry about Ciel being hurt made you so frantic you didn’t think clear? or is it a force of habit?

let me also say that Ciel is so unfazed by this he’s just ‘’what gotten into you? ‘’ like there’s ‘’we’re still in the carriage !’’ that the panel didn’t mention.
