‘Working in deep mud in the wind and the rain’
I never hate large animal work more than I do when I am wet to the skin and freezing my ass off.
And when I am being marked on my enthusiasm.
“Politely ignoring homophobic, racist comments from farmers and vets”
I swear to god. I am not exactly quiet about the fact that I am engaged. With a capital GAY. Like, to someone who is not a man. I am also, not a man.
I really don’t think that getting bogged was ‘super gay’ and I don’t think that the cattle yard set up was ‘queer’.
ThatOddPlace/Vet School Problems
We are changing! “Vet School Problems” are becoming ‘Just Vet Things”. This is for a few reasons
1. I will (fingers crossed) leave vet school soon-ish and then my ‘relatable’ content will not be from vet school, but from my actual day-to-day vetty life
2. Not everything I post is actually a problem! Sometimes it is a nice thing and I feel a little weird putting it under the VSP banner
3. I’ve been wanting to move on from theoddplace url for awhile and I fiured I’d just put it all together at once.
Hope the changes aren’t too weird!
“Being covered in bruises and not knowing where they came from”
Head to freaking toe....
Saw my first canine cesarean today. Guess how many pups we delivered alive? Nine. And she'd already whelped 3 at home before coming in. Someone's going to be busy!
Presenting ‘Tired of it all Veterinarian Cat’.
Clinic Cat grows tired of your story.
So I actually got engaged the day before I left.
It may, or may not, be killing me
Ok, so the clinic I am at right now, the guy who does the smallies stuff is the easiest person in the world to get along with. I think I might have actually started vet before he did, but between my degree being a year longer and me taking time off...
Point is, I am so sad that I didn’t meet him in a social setting because I would love to be his friend. He really has made this whole rotation a helluva lot easier.
Hopefully he’ll write me an excellent reference instead ;)
Is it JUST me, or are mobile vets the world’s worst drivers?
I don’t know how I haven’t died yet
So I’ve been really quiet lately...
You haven’t heard anything from me for months! Reason is mainly my mental health went in the toilet and I took a bit of a break from uni.
But I’m back now and I’m getting my health back on track. Slowly. So very slowly...
I’m about to finish up week 2 of my final clinical rotations (only 28 weeks to go...) and so I have a whole SHITload of #vetschoolproblems for you.
So, without further adieu, I will return you to your regularly scheduled programming.

If your chicken or fish are not healthy, you should see your exotics veterinarian for a examination
We need thousands of locals to join our team to help combat dengue in Townsville - and eventually around the world.
If you live in Townsville, Aus, please have a look and consider taking part.
If you live in the rest of the world, this is seriously exciting stuff! This project aims to infect local mosquito populations with a bacteria that prevents them from passing diseases to humans. It was developed to target Dengue Fever, but it turns out that it also covers Zika. Breeding transmits the bacteria, and each ‘Mozzie Box’ includes ~50 impregnated female eggs and some mozzie food. You add water and leave them to hatch.
When the are adults, they leave to breed and pass on the bacteria to their offspring. If enough Mozzie Boxes are deployed in an area, all of the mosquitos in that area will carry the bacteria.
This programme is community-based and has the potential to have seriously positive impacts on communities. It also doesn’t rely on eradication or on-going maintenance of infrastructure (such as mosquito nets), so it has the potential to actually be doable.
