ATTN Fandoms and Roleplayers
This is really getting out of hand that there are now people making Icon repository blogs that involve mass cropping, slicing, and editing fanart for the sake of making icons for everyone to use. While yes the intentions seem kind and you shrug and say it’s for fun and games and that it’s okay, you are making an ethical mistake here.
What’s worse is these blogs would announce that they dare not credit the people who these art belongs to because it takes “too much time and effort” and that’s ALL that’s REQUIRED, belittling the fact that the original artists took MORE TIME AND EFFORT TO MAKE THAT ART THAT THEY JUST VANDALIZED.
Stating that you do not own the fanart you cropped or used for your blog is not GOOD ENOUGH AS A MAKE-SHIFT CREDIT.
IF YOU DO NOT CREDIT THE ARTIST PROPERLY, AND YOU ARE SHAMELESSLY TAKING FAME OUT OF THEIR WORK, YOU ARE STILL STEALING THEIR WORK.
If you are going to touch their work, you are OBLIGATED TO NOT ONLY PROPERLY SOURCE BUT ASK FOR THEIR PERMISSION.
WHY in the WORLD is this CONCEPT so HARD for people to UNDERSTAND?
Please, I beg of you. if you have any ounce of REAL respect for all the artists/fanartists out there. Don’t support, condone, or encourage such reckless, CARELESS, and SHAMELESS actions done against artists who aren’t even aware their work are being bastardized.
People also tend to blame the language barrier as to why they don’t bother to seek out the artist or contact them. It’s high time you realize that this is the same for them.
There have been a number of cases when artists who find out or encounter their work has been plagiarized, vandalized, cropped, sliced, or used without their permission who TAKE DOWN THEIR ENTIRE SITE BECAUSE THEY FEEL POWERLESS BECAUSE OF THE LANGUAGE BARRIER.
They would remove their art from sight because they don’t think they can DO anything to stop you.
YOU as the fandom are making a very big mistake for shrugging this off as something minor when you claim you RESPECT THEM.
DON’T YOU DARE HALF ASS THIS IF YOU LOVE THEIR WORK. If you want to keep enjoying it and respecting them as you claim,
