Reworking an idea. The pictures are screenshots from my mac so theyâre low-quality.
In-Progress Shots
Place Project Proposal
My place project will be a short video with an animation overlay. The content of the video will include pictures that I find around my house so that I can find digitally on a social media site. Please send photos will be accompanied with a hand-drawn animation by myself. Itâs combining three art mediums will be video , camera photography, digital drawing. The materials used will be footage that I capture from my cell phone or my Canon DSLR are, after effects or a program very similar and can complete the task for me and my wacom drawing tablet.
I will try to capture moments with my family and rummage through old scrapbooks to find old family photographs. I will load all of this into after effects or like I said a program similar and do the drawing and then compile the video in hitfilms express.
Post-Crit Response time
One of the strengths of the finished project was that the cinematography was good. One weakness that Professor Wind touched on was that she would like to see more clips and for me to further push the project. I canât say that my concept was grass by a majority of my classmates. Many of them could clearly see where I was coming from with my timeless moments pitch for the main idea of my project. Professor went also suggested that I use different audio clips. Sheâs not seeing that the choice of an instrumental was not good with this video but the audio couldâve couldâve been more personalized and pushed further along with adding more clips and making the clips more personal. I do think that I can push the video a little further but I am very content with where it stands now. I donât think that there are a lot of changes that were suggested that are very needed in the enhancement of the video.
Time Artist Statement
For this project I used video in order to display and deconstruct the idea of time in today's society. It is going to be a short film of everyday life slowed down, played in real time and sped up. The discipline is going to be video. Itâs going to be a looped video and although I intended for it to be played in the Student Center I unfortunately was unable to.
I went around and filmed parts of downtown Ann Arbor, mainly the area around pinball petes. I got an opportunity to take some footage while I was in the car and I also used some clips from earlier this year. After I collected enough footage I carefully went through the footage I had to see of what quality the clips to compare the quality to my DSLR to see if they would not be drastically different. I got an opportunity to highlight some things that I tend to not pay too much attention to or give any after thought.I still related much of my project to the discussion we delved into that talked about how time is a socially constructed topic, essentially trying to dismantle the idea that thereâs not enough time. I think showing this through video was much easier to accomplish. It caught the attention of the viewer and kept them reeled and attentive much like how tv shows and commercials can. I also, accomplished the reiteration of the idea of time passing with the streaming of imagery in constant motion.

Place Project Ideas
Black & white photography. Pictures of the âafterâ photos of childhood places paired with original childhood photo.
Form: Photography (physical prints)
Content: The images will be images I collect from scrapbooks and things I have at home of my childhood. I will be taking photos on a b&w film
camera of those same pics from my childhood in the present day.
Process: I will rimage and digital scan the photos that I have collected. I would rent/buy a film
camera and go to the sites in the photos and take the photo.
Experimental video. I choose a series of adjectives that describe a âplaceâ that iâve encountered and recreate that feeling though different clips paired together.
Form: This would be a video.
Content: Would consist of me describing the feeling of a place strictly through imagery.
Process: I would put together a group of words in a bowl or hat and pick three. From those three adjectives I would find imagery that helps in portraying what they are without the use of words.
Mini animation creating the feeling of home. Illustrating the saying âhome is where the heart isâ
Form: This would an animated short.
Content: The content would include mini sketches of what and how I feel about home.
Process: I wills story-board, sketch, draw in adobe illustrator and put the scenes together in after effects or something similar.
Place Reasearch Journal
FORM:Short video/film.
CONTENT: The storyline of the video is of a dad showing his two daughters how to make a paper airplane.
PROCESS: This could have been filmed either two ways. This could have been completely scripted and staged all the way through or they could have been prompted and filmed organically.
Place Research Journal
FORM: This is a short animation. Adobe illustrator and after effects were probably used or applications similar to it.
CONTENT: It was a story about how the illustrator overcame the mindset she had of not being a good enough artist. That was shown through her present day perspective and her childhood perspective.
PROCESS: A story-board was created to keep track of scenes and sequencing. Character drawings were more than likely sketched out and then drawn using illustrator or another digital drawing application. And the sequencing was more than likely put together using video editing or something like after effects.
Reading Response: PLACE
The beginning of this reading discusses how the geographical location of an artist can vastly impact the art they create and present to the rest of society. The writer goes on to say that although an artist geographic location can inform the viewers of the whereabouts and the origins of the artist it â[is] a conscious awareness of of place that informs the work of the wide range of contemporary artists.â (Place, 69). The options of place when creating art can mean many things. It can be you, the artists, origin, the location that the piece is installed, etc. With that being said, with art becoming so portable it definitely has had a major impact on how and where art can be viewed. Art traditionally has been in the place that it was made, there was very little portability of the pieces. There have been many ways this âproblemâ has been remedied. A solution that gets brought up in the reading is the creation of art easels, which makes transporting painting much simpler. This caused not only a physical shift but a mental and cognitive shift in art. The physical removal of art in places ultimately led to people believing that âthe meaning of an artwork should remain consistent regardless of where the artwork is displayed.â (Place, 78). I definitely agree with that statement, a change in location should not define the price of artwork, unless that location was chosen to enhance it for that purpose. For example if I paint a clock, it should be recognized and interpreted and understood as being a clock regardless of I have it in an white fine gallery space or hung up on a tree in the woods.
Identity Post-Crit Response
One of the weaknesses discussed in the final project was how literal the imagery was with the poetry. A couple of my classmates as well as Professor Windtalked about how we didnât have to be literal in the sense that the images go exactly with what is said and how the variation in images that werenât directly related wouldâve been more interesting to see. A strength that was talked about one of my classmates mentioned that The sunflower seed was one that stuck out even after the second believe it was just one of the scenes that were the most memorable and most memorizing throughout the piece. A suggestion that was made by Professor Wind specifically is making the stock footage more varied. She said this can be done by layering multiple images on top of each other like how I did toward the end of the piece, using multiple textures and really just not making it so literal. I definitely learned to step outside of my comfort zone and to push that further even if I feel like it wonât do well. The feedback is everything as far as making better work for the future. I definitely canât imagine myself continuing this line of research like this. I think I would want to do more of what I did but just pushing the imagery a lot further than what I did in this last piece. I might explore a different topic a more vague and not so personal topic so itâs easier for me to contrast images and get a different set of imager I definitely can imagine myself continuing the line of research like this. I think I would want to do more of what I did but just pushing the imagery a lot further than what I did in this last piece. Identity Project/ Artist Statement
Identity Artist Statement
My Identity project is a video. In the early planning stages of the project I was super unsure about what images I wanted to include and what can help portray the idea of identity. I went with stock footage for the entire project and my own voice is used for the voice-over of the poem. Although my own images were not used I still believe for it to be a reflection of my identity and it being my own voice adds to that as well. In the beginning stages of my poetry writing I was looking for my poems to cover themes such as race, my placement in the world and society/ How I feel in the world and society, and gender. That wasnât what came from my writing, it does sort of touch on âHow I feelâ and âMy placement in the worldâ. The poem itself although vague is in direct correlation of my placement. I had a strong sense of self entering into college but, as time went on I began to notice that I lost certain parts of myself. The materials I used were free stock footage that I accessed through Youtube and my own poetry. I used Hitfilm express for the video editing software and Ocean audio and Voice Memos on my Iphone.I decided against shooting my surroundings and using the lighting studio in Sherzer. I used just aroco footage that I found on the internet. Once I have collected all the footage I deem necessary I loaded it in Hitfilm express and cut and edit the clips. My intended meaning is to express my exploration and hopefully discovery of myself through my poetry aided with a visual.
