Maybe Laura committed patricide, moved down to Texas, and changed her name to Carrie Page at some point. I don't know if that's really the case, but, because of that scene where Carrie hears, "Laura..." in Sarah Palmer's voice and screams (in addition to that scene where Dale/Richard refers to Leland in past tense and Sarah in present tense), I'm choosing to believe that Cooper succeeded in saving Laura's life but failed to make it less of a living hell. She's still miserable and traumatized, but now there's a mysterious dead guy inside her house whom she may or may not have shot in the forehead.
