~Project Statement~

When I first began this project I didn't know where to start. Story was such a broad thing, I didn't know where to look. I began to look at quotes that I had saved and from there my project began.

I based my project on the quote "someone has to leave first. This is a very old story, there is no other version of this story" by Richard Siken. This quote really resonated with me.

From this quote I wanted to create the story of me and my dad. I wanted to explore my memories of him and what he taught me.

This evolved into "tea time" when the family would always have tea at 9pm and watch the news. Stories over tea is an old thing and I thought representing my stories with my dad on cups would be a great way of showing the story I wanted to tell.

My finally series of mugs! I'm so glad about how they all turned out. I love all the different textures and techniques for each one! I also liked how the base paint looked on the different surfaces. I wish I had the time to add the designs I wanted to but I am still glad I got to work with so many materials.

I am very surprised about how hard this material dried! It was a struggle to remove from the mold and I was afraid it would crack but it came away in one piece. It took a full day to dry while sitting on a radiator. I prefer the texture of this compared to the plaster of paris since it is smoother and will be easier to work on.

The pulp needed some work the next day. It needed a lot more glue before it became a workable material. I think I initially added way to much paper and that's why it felt lumpy and damp. I tried to form the cup with out a mold but it just kept flopping. I lined a mug again with cling film and built up the pulp. I am happy with how it has turned out so far!

I attempted to make paper pulp to create another mug. I'm not sure I got the ratios right because it doesn't seem sticky, just kind of damp. I also had to tediously pick out some paper that ended up being a weird plastic the wouldn't disolve in water. I hope the mixture will dry out a bit by tomorrow and be useable. The tutorial I used is below.

I have made a mug out of paper mache. I used a recipe from a YouTube video for my ratios. I molded it around a cup that I had lined with cling film and left it to dry overnight. It's a lot sturdier than I expected. I'm thinking of giving my mugs the same base coat of colour before I add designs.

I created some sketches of design ideas as well as different forms I was thinking of making. I want to create stamps with lino so I can create some repeat patterns on my vessel. I'm not sure what form I'll go for yet but I think I like the idea of a series of mugs.

"The Shed Project" by Lee John Philip's

This project was created as a dedication and momento to Lee's grandfather, Handal Jones who passed away in 1994. It is a visual inventory of his shed and is still in progress.

I adore this project because of what it represents and the beauty of the designs. It reminds me so much of my dad's own shed. The process of studying an object has always fascinated me and this project really in-capsulates that.

Process of creating a mug with wire and plaster of Paris. It took a lot longer than I expected to make one mug. I might make my serious of mugs in different materials rather than multiple plaster ones. I am happy with how it turned out in the end, just needs to dry now!

These are more plans I'm developing for other objects I made in the first semester. One is all about gardening since my dad was a gardening fanatic and the other is just memories I have of tea time that we had every night. I might making the tea time one more stylised and "childish".

This is my progress with the planter! I decided to do the moon phases on a dark background so they stand out. I am thinking of maybe using nail polish for the moon's so they'll have a shimmer and shine. The plate got broken before so I decided to try the Japanese style of kintsugi.

I firstly want to work on my planter I made in the first semester. I'm basing all the designs on different things my dad has thought me. This one will be all about the moon and its phases and I might incorporate a telescope since we used to look at the moon with one.

Project Statement

For the project movement I decided to explore the more abstract movement of inclusivity with concerns for disabilities, especially diabetes.

I wanted to examine how disabilities affect certain aspects of life and also the mechanics and movements involved with living with a disability.

I explored the items I used everyday so I could acknowledge them and really understand them since they had become so common place.

I also wanted to explore the impact of interacting with certain things such as clothing and fashion when I comes to a disability.

My disciplines are fashion, ceramics and painting.

~Ceramics~

I experimented with paper to create different circles and textures. I also decided which image I'll be mimicking when I create my 3-D box. I think the tight, twisted circles will be great for the solid circles and I think I'll be able to creat some good depth by slotting circles into the round, tall one at different heights.

~Ceramics~

After using my diabetes stuff to create patterns for fashion I thought I would be a good idea to attempt a mark making sheet with them for ceramics. I'm really happy with how it turned out with the various circles and shades.

I then created a view finder to isolate parts of the image which I learned from the ceramic workshop. I created three different sizes and I'm surprised how much it changed the composition of the images.

~Fashion & Painting~

I took apart my various diabetes tools and created stamps out of them. I wanted to create repetitive patterns and see what types of shapes they would produce.

It was difficult to get the right ration of paint so the "stamp" could be seen clearly and all the tools being plastic didn't help. I used acrylic paint for this.

It might interesting to create a design out of some of them in more flattering colours. This also helped me understand the various items better in there shape and mechanisms which will help a lot when I attempt to paint them.
