Book Cover Finale

My final two book cover completed where I utilised markers, fineliner pens, paint pens and soft pastels.

I utilised the white paint pen for the pinstripe suit and for the bird's poo. I had ran out of grey paper and I felt the paper on the second image was a little too white. Therefore I brushed a little blue pastel onto the paper.

As there is three images there, you can tell which one I preferred as it has more depth with the colour then of the paler image. The writing on both images needs more practice and I'll need more paper. Now I can let you decide.

I so enjoyed working on the present two images shown above as they gave a smile to my face.

On my search for Murphy's Law book covers I have encountered a number of books all titled Murphy's Law and majority of the books are of crime novels. The humour of Murphy is not one I'm able to locate. The funny genre. Arthur Bloch has written eight books of that I have found, of The Complete Murphy's Law collection. The hysterical side of how things can go wrong.

Mood boards

I have three contrasting storylines but yet all the same subject matter, Murphy's law.

Mood board 1 - Murphy's Law

I have displayed a photo of a tyre, a small tack (nail) as to represent the people who catch a nail in the tyre. The colours I have chosen are black, white and grey. My texture is from an old tyre where I cut a small piece from.

The black material is to represent a pinstripe suit female or male. The two photos left are of a bird and of bird's poo.

Mood board 2

The board exhibits colours, blue white and black. Blue is for the bulb, the black and the white are to constitute for the colour of the tiles. Under the texture sign is a piece of the papier mache of the bulb which will portray glass. The piece of white paper glued to the mood board will depict the white tile.

Conclusion:

They are all murphy's Laws, the bulb falling and breaking all over the floor. The person who is wearing a fresh, clean pinstripe suit, walking to work and a bird appears and poos on the person. And last, getting caught with a nail in the tyre . I feel I prefer the nail with the tyre image. The treading gives more detailed.

All bad days none the less but is this Murphy's Law or bad luck. I'll leave that up to you.

Artist Research

While researching artist I came across Kate Moross, and viewing her work was intriguing, the colours, typography and the shapes in her hand, (circles). Kate utilises a great pallette with contrasting colours .

Experiment 3

Part 3 Book Cover

Murphy's Law, Anything that can go wrong will go wrong and author Samantha Lynch.

Here is my experiment, the top image is a total fail with the script all over the place as this was my first time trying this on my phone. So I will say this, this Murphy's Law (all going wrong).

The second image, I could function much better and investigated more colours, types and styles. The phone has limited options but I considered this obtaining more material to research and also in discovering this experiment which is so intriguing.

Experiment 2

Part 2

After I completed cutting the pieces from the papier mache, I arranged white paper on the floor to give my black tiled floor a little white as a tile effect. I also wanted to capture the blue colour in the bulb, again to give more colour. I placed the bulb pieces on the paper and floor makeshift tile. I caught the five images as shown above for part 3.

Experiment 1

Copy & Paste Workshop

Part 1

I attended a copy a paste workshop with Elaine and Mary on gluing newspaper onto an object as to create a shape (bulb) to experiment with my design.

Materials:

Lamp in the shape a bulb, PVA, Newapaper, Paint, Brushes

I pasted four layers of newspaper, letting each layer dry. When the mixture had dried on the whole piece, I painted the bulb, blue and then to give the bulb a glossy effect.

The last image shown above is displaying the bulb,which is been torn (broken), a Murphy's law . I am feeling a little skeptical about the outcome as of right now, but perhaps?

Life Experience - Murphy's Laws

The images I have posted is for my concept Murphy's Law. I have tried to capture a story in my head that would secure an image of humour but also truth. The tyre image, is from a personal experience where I thought I had a slow puncture but when I got the tyre changed, I saw a screw in the tyre. Murphy's Law.

There is a vast spectrum of experiences we all have been through that can be humourously hinted at Murphy's Law. My third image is elaborate but I myself have gotten caught on the same street, twice when people came down a ONE WAY street. I was so glad I had stopped to check as I do anymore. Murphy's Law?

Research - Fonts

The fonts I was observing here are the fonts taken from Microsoft Word. To survey all amenities and assemble fonts that will create an image to complete my design.

For my first design I had no feeling that caught my eye on any of the above fonts. I clicked on DaFont (address shown below) and for my image I typed in contrasting that I thought would best describe my sketches and constructed the list shown below:

Patterns

After I completed the twelve thumbnails showing in the first image of patterns, I then decreased the number to four on the next image and to the third image is where I reduced the thumbnails to two.

The thumbnail on the left is a pattern of blue pens and my explanation would be a murphy's Law as when I'm looking for a black pen, I can only ever find blue.

The thumbnail on the right is when you are enjoying a piece of toast with jam and it falls to the floor, 99.99%of the time it will fall jam side down. This has also happened to me, a few times.

The final image is my final choice although I do feel a fail in this particular pattern and will utilise my additional abstraction to accurately display my concept.

Research - Typography

Calvin Harris & Sam Smith were playing on my ipod and I observed the two contrasting fonts in the single 'Promises'. I had never taken notice of this before but now that I know what to consider.

I researched further into two fonts mixed in a logo, which was explained on the site. "Mixing fonts inside any design can be a 'dangerous' idea. If the fonts are too similar then the viewer will feel confused, but if the fonts are too different then it will make viewer feel multiple emotions that fight against one another".

The images I perceived from the site are shown below and reading through what mixed fonts would be described as feeling confused. I did have the feeling of mixed emotions when I viewed the third image down on the left as I did have to look at the logo twice, which is said to be 'dangerous'.

But saying this, if I post this concept to where an image that can bewilder a person, can also leave a memory because of the thinking that went behind this image?

Here I have my very rough storybord for my story Murphy's Law. To have this as accurate as I can, I decided not to enter an excessive amount of "Laws" but in mentioning one and following through on an actual law seem a more preferable concept. I felt I would be overcompensating the story and to say "Less is more".

Murphy’s Law. 

Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

The sky was a brilliant blue with a scattering of clouds. Cora was sitting in the garden, reading the newspaper. She was pleased she put her parasol up to shade her from the sun and to read her paper. She shouted into Ivy, who was in the house “It’s so perfect, it’s 20 degrees today”. Ivy, who was wearing her sunglasses with it being so bright outside, making sure, not to trip over anything. She walked out of the house cautiously balancing the tray of food in her hands. Cora saw Ivy and put her paper down to settle herself in for dinner. Ivy set the tray on the table and arranged the bowls on the placemats. They were enjoying the food immensely as they both gestured to each other in agreement.

In the sky, there was three birds in flight and suddenly Ivy heard a noise above them. Ivy looked up and saw dark shadings on the parasol, Oh no, bird poop she thought. She glanced over at her mother and watched her staring down at Ivy’s bowl. Ivy looked at her food, flabbergasted viewing the two blobs and screaming, “OF COURSE, MURPHY’S LAW”.
