“you can always tell if the designer loves women by his designs”
Painting march 9th
this is a painting I created over the weekend. It was something I had ideas for and planned on doing but waited until I figured out what way I intended to express it
I tried out creating paintings subjectively using just lines and shapes for example …
During painting with eoin I was exploring this genre/type of painting as I’ve never done it before but I wasn’t happy with this piece
Over time I took inspiration off Ives kliens body print and created a print based off it and decided to create a painting based on it but working on using shapes as I like how I did in ceramics creating the essence and shape of a woman’s body. It was a painting I didn’t have a lot of time to create as the project is almost concluded.
I loved how it came out and I think that I really achieved what I wanted to represent… of course with more time I could have created a more finalised piece. But overall I’m happy with it
Thoughts
I’ve never really thought about this type of clothing till I got invested in my project on movement. I remember that these type of prints became very popular a couple of years ago. I always thought wow this print really makes peoples body’s look good as it deceive your mind into seeing a perfect female body.
Since looking into my idea for my project it’s made me see a new side of how this idealistic vision of the body seeps into every aspect of life even clothing.
It’s quite a sad concept really. How females loved this type of print so much because it creates the idea of the perfect body that you could just simply buy.
If I had more time in my project I would have loved to have created my own version of this in a print form.

As my impressions were a complete fail I didn’t give up on the piece. I remembered how Elaine showed us how to create textures and how one of them made this fabric like texture.
I decided to use the ceramic mattress I made and use the Barbie doll to create the impression of a female body in a sexualised pose underneath fabric on a bed. I was really really happy with how this turned out and I was proud I didn’t give up on this piece and I used the techniques I learned to create an interesting piece that really incorporated the sense of movement in a piece.
I used the Barbie doll I borrowed from Paul to create a piece that represents female body’s in movement and positions that are often sexualised.
Here is some inspiration I took to create this piece

Ceramics Talk with Sinead
On Monday we had a zoom call with Sinead who shared her story of her experience and life with ceramics, she spoke to us about her studio … she converted it into a shop so she could sell her pieces and also work while having the shop open.
She shared her opinions on her conversion from low firing to high firing and the pros and cons between the two her opinions on overgrazing and the difference between colours and surfaces.. which was interesting because it is something we could all understand and apply to our work in what we decided we liked the most.
She explained how pieces like the little ceramic sheep she made at her shop sold well cause of tourism. That was interesting to me because it was a way to make money from her hobby that people liked buying as it symbolised ireland too them. How she catered to her audience where she was based ( it was a place with a lot of tourism).
She shared the new things she as making at them moment which were these really cute mini milk jars which I snapped a picture of above^ they were useful to hold flowers. It showed me how you can use ceramics not just for artistic purposes and they can be used for useful purposes too.
She gave us some advice : while you’re in college TRY NEW THINGS!
That we have all the resources at hand to try these new ideas and new things and figure out what you enjoy and what you are good at.

Today I had an idea playing off of something Elaine showed us while explaining the many different ways to create texture with ceramics,
I created a mattress as I wanted to resemble an impression of a female body into what seemed like a bed.
I created slabs out of clay using box templates that the tutors already had in the ceramics room. then placing a slab onto sponges putting a piece of cloth over the slab and pressing holes into it this created texture in the slab resembling a mattress.
I had to hunt down a Barbie doll to use for the impression which I eventually found and I added a video of me creating the impression using the doll.
Although it didn’t turn out good as the Barbie doll couldn’t create as much of an imprint as I could with a stick for the mattress it still was fun to play around with the idea.
Fun fact
Today when I was speaking with my tutor she told me something very interesting. While she was looking at my pieces she said it reminded her of the fact the first ever recorded piece created with clay was actually of a female body.
This was extremely interesting to me because thinking about the fact female body’s have been objectified for this long in the world is a crazy realisation …
This pieces is called
“Venus of Dolni Vestonice”
It is a ceramic statuette of a nude female figure dated to 31,000-27,000 years ago
(😮)
This is one of the oldest known ceramic articles in the world…
…And it’s of a female nude body
Point proven
Madness :)
Ceramics Monday 3rd March
Today I created a silhouette of my body, with exaggerated hips and waist. I used an image I have turned to many times in my project, chatting to my tutor about how it is funny how females pose in pictures. It isn’t real and it’s all to eventuate feature we laughed and I even shared how I do it myself and I’m a victim of falling into these traps of exploitation of my body myself.
I like this pose as it entails movement within itself , she asked me would I be adding a head to my piece and I decided that No I wouldn’t as my aim is the focus on the body and how that is my topic of my project and I aim to objectivity it as many do in real life.
I aim to create a series of these pieces using much inspiration from my print pieces within this clay workshop

Ceramics feb 24th-28th
After going through my sketch book with both ceramic tutors, I suggested I didn’t want to create something as simple as a female body I wanted to be more suggestive about it.
we had the idea of of taking parts of the body creating them then collaging them. I created a pinch pot to resemble a singular boob and aim to create more this week.
( I was out Friday due to being sick and was not able to have them fired so under-glazing and glazing them isn’t an option for me, which is ok as I have played around with it in previous projects so now I can just focus on creating which is equally as interesting to me and gives me more time to explore ideas)
Everyone created boxes by scoring and slipping pieces we had cut out of clay using tools and then brainstormed some shapes from within our project .
One of my tutors noticed during my primary research that I had outlined my body and the shape it created and came up with the idea of creating a shape representing that within the box.
I love how these pieces came out. Although it is a pity I won’t be able to glaze them I do enjoy how representative of my idea they are. I feel like I was really able to create and express ideas through using clay.
