Yall know Bring It On was a metaphor about cultural approp…..nevermind
Nah say it Bring It On was a movie of how the white girls stole the Black girls shit
^^they stay jockin
Bring it on was about cheerleading, it could even be argued that it was about intellectual property theft or the fairness in competition. Shit, you could even say it was about the fact that schools in lower income communities are not able to provide for their students in ways that schools in other communities can; but the movie was not about cultural appropriation.
Its okay mama it went over a lot of our heads too.
Still my favorite post.
Cultural Appropriation is a fucking joke.
If you complain about cultural appropriation you need to just shut up. There’s a difference between wearing a Native American Headdress and wearing it and dancing around a fire and chanting saying, “call me chef Wakata”.
Actually functionally there isn’t a difference: “people will frequently argue that a particular statement or action doesn’t constitute racism because racism wasn’t intended. As noted elsewhere, in Human Rights law and anti-racism education, intentionality is irrelevant. It is the effect/impact of the action on the target person/group that is to be considered and takes precedence.”
No overt mocking required.
“Two ways in which cultural appropriation can be harmful are easily identified. The first sort of harm is violation of a property right … The second sort of harm is an attack on the viability or identity of the cultures or their members. Appropriation that undermines a culture in these ways would certainly cause devastating and clearly wrongful harm to members of the culture … Other acts of appropriation potentially leave members of a culture exposed to discrimination, poverty and lack of opportunity.” - from The Ethics of Cultural Appropriation (edited by Young and Brunk)
It’s a costume…. Stop taking things so personally. I have met more ethnic people saying, “thank you for expressing interest in my culture” than them saying, “ugh I’m offended”, which all comes from here.
Emotions aren’t even a factor, it literally has nothing to do with getting offended or feelings, I studied this shit academically. Cultural appropriation via the use of cultures as costumes has been proven to cause harm, mainly because it’s a form of dehumanization, and dehumanization is how a dominant group justifies the violence and discrimination against a marginalized group.
I am a member of a marginalized group, and believe me, we don’t think white people wearing costumes of us shows any interest in our culture. Asking us questions about aspects of culture and if we will teach them about it? THAT is people showing real interest in our culture.
Why can’t you just chill out and realize no one is dehumanizing you?
Like I told you, I am chill. I have literally no emotional reaction to it, but that doesn’t change that I know, supported by shit tons of research and evidence, that those kinds of costumes are dehumanizing and harmful.
Like I already clearly explained and you clearly couldn’t, didn’t or didn’t want to read, a person doesn’t have to intend to be racist or dehumanize for their action to be dehumanizing and racist.
And why do we need to accept your actions as an HONOR??
I know you appreciate Native Americans, but if the only time you show your appreciation is if you wear an inaccurate cheap costume that perpetuates stereotypes to express your once a year interest in us, that’s not an honor.
You don’t know what honor means.

SPEAK THAT TRUTH
Booooooommmm
“Fetishization of mixed children literally translates into: I want to have a daughter who will grow up into a woman I think is fuckable.” Somebody finally said it! That’s exactly what I think whenever I see someone’s disturbing fawning behavior over mixed-race children.
Everything she said was on point. It makes no damn sense that we still gotta say it: Black and Latinx are not mutually exclusive. Biack is a race, whereas Latinx has NOTHING to do with race; it broadly denotes one’s cultural identity and roots that can be traced in one or more Latin American countries. It’s that damn simple.

We need to have a conversation about mental health among black college students.
Oh my God……
