How to Draw Native People: a Tutorial/Reference Guide
As requested, here is a basic guide for how to draw Indigenous peoples (mostly focused on North America)! Also please note that this is not an exhaustive list of Native American phenotypes/features, and more like an intro on very common features that can be found in us, and even then, not altogether at once on a single person’s face. I highly encourage the use of references and care taken into research when drawing. I may do a part 2 that goes slightly more into depth, but for now, enjoy part one.
Resouces:
How to draw Native Skin tutorial (don’t draw us red!)
List of Native American Celebrities, which include their tribe(s) and home country, with 1,250 names, to use for your referencing pleasure
How to draw black people by Peachdeluxe, & Black hair in depth by misslaney for mixed black Natives
How to draw East Asian People, a guide by Chuwenjie, for mixed Asian Natives AND because it includes a lovely tutorial on monolid eyes, a shared feature of Native people

ya’ll are wrong. the two types of writers are really “i will talk about this and blog about it and make sixteen thought-out pages where i explore a single character point and i’ve written a novella on the backstory of another and actually involve others in my process”
and “if i so much as breathe about this before it’s ready and done, the story dies because it thinks i already told it”
when the song ur listening to helps you daydream the solution to a plot hole in ur ocs story
fixed it

If you're a creator and you needed to hear this today:
You have no idea how many people lurk on your work. No idea how many times people go back to revisit your work. How big they smile when they simply think about your work. How fast their heart beats, how excited they get when they see that you posted something.
People are shy with their feedback. Sometimes it’s because they’re simply shy. Other times it’s because they assume you already know how great and talented you are. Could be both.
My point is, even if you barely have any likes or reblogs, don’t get discouraged. You have a lot of silent fans, but they are still your fans. Keep on creating. Because there is always someone out there who will love what you have made.
I did a redraw! The piece on the right is a drawing I did about two years ago! The one on the left is the updated version ❤
Warriors AU! I think they'd be in Shadowclan, Thunderclan, Riverclan, and Windclan respectively. Any ideas for names?

yesterday in economic botany we were learning about plant based oil compounds and stuff and my botany professor was talking about lynn seed oil, which in woodworking is rubbed on over furniture as a varnish. this oil has an exothermic chemical reaction with oxygen, meaning that the reaction creates heat. what often happens, apparently, is that woodworkers will finish rubbing on the oil with a rag and then will ball up the rag and throw it away, but because the reaction is taking place and the heat can’t escape (like it would on a piece of furniture where it can be cooled) it gets trapped in the rag, which gets hotter and hotter until it reaches the temperature where it bursts into flame. apparently many woodworking shops have been burned down by this. the proper way to dispose of rags with this oil is to hang them up on a clothesline, so again the reaction never gets enough heat to start a fire. im telling you this because im a writer and ive never heard of substance that will just…spontaneously combust conveniently like that so long as it’s in a confined space. my botany professor tried it in a trash can in his driveway and it did indeed burst into flame after 45 minutes, which is an exceptionally convenient time delay. im sorry im tying this so fast my laptop is on 2% battery and theres no outlet an
TO THOSE MAKING NATIVE OCS
I see this a lot, no one has actual names, or any reference for names, that are legit Native American, varying among the tribes, for their characters.
Babynames.com and shit like that will give you names made up by white people.
However, I’ve got your solution.
Native-Languages is a good website to turn to for knowledge on a lot of native things, including native names. If you’re unsure about the names you’ve picked, they even have a list of made up names here!
Please don’t trust names like babynames.com for native names, they’re made up and often quite offensive to the cultures themselves.
Thank you!
Legit Tip #203
or - Writing Believable and Relatable Anger
Everybody gets angry sometimes, and when a character gets angry - at themselves, or at someone else, or a group of people - it can make for great dramatic tension in a story.
However, do bear in mind that you can’t have a character just get angry out of the blue. This is a mistake that’s made in a surprisingly large amount of media - probably because writers do realize that anger makes for great drama, but they don’t really think about the psychology behind anger.
So, let’s start with that.
Here’s one of the first things you need to know - Anger is a secondary emotion.
What that means is that unlike fear, or shame, or happiness, anger is an emotion that is caused by other emotions a person may be feeling. A person doesn’t become angry for no reason. Anger is always - ALWAYS - rooted in something else.
That means that when you write a character who is angry, it’s always a good idea to try and suss out what that primary emotion is, especially if this is going to be a big scene and a source of a lot of drama. Let’s take a look at a couple of examples so you can see what I mean.
Example 1: Anger Rooted in Shame
“Why did you leave me on the bridge?” said Zara.
“Hm? Oh. I guess I didn’t really think of coming to get you.”
“…it’s because you didn’t think I’d be any use to you, isn’t it?” She folded her arms over her chest. “You just thought I’d be in the way, like the last time. Damn it, Daniel. I thought we were past this.”
“Zara, no. It’s not that, I just–”
“Don’t bother making excuses! I can see right through you!”
(Essentially, Zara is ashamed of her past failure and is projecting onto Daniel.)
Example 2: Anger Rooted in Fear
“Why did you leave me on the bridge?” said Zara.
“Hm? Oh, I guess I didn’t really think of coming to get you.”
“But I’m the safety officer. If anything had gone wrong…”
“Nothing went wrong.” Daniel grinned. “I don’t get why you look so upset. What’s the issue, Zara?”
“Because there was a fifty-fifty chance, goddamit!” She slammed her hand down on the file on the desk. “You read the report too. I know you did. There was a fifty-fifty chance of a systems failure and I’m the only one who knows how to reboot the OS if that were to happen. But you didn’t come to get me, because you were in such a goddamned rush…”
(In this case, Zara’s fear and anxiety over what could have happened is making her angry toward Daniel. The vibe is much different.)
Some things that can cause anger include: General Fear, Worry or Anxiety, Fear of Abandonment, Feeling a Loss of Control, Lacking Information (Especially w/ a Partner Who Doesn’t Offer Information), or Sadness
Different People Express Anger Differently
This should be a given, but I’m going to say it anyway. Different people express anger differently, so your individual characters should have different ways of expressing anger.
Some people will become very expressive and vocal, while others will shut down and become very silent. Still others will shut down the people attempting to communicate with them, effectively cutting off any chance at continuing a dialogue. Some examples:
Ex. 1: “What the hell do you mean by this?” Kaylee said as she stormed into the room, slamming the door closed behind her. “I just heard from that scumbag Franklin that you’re making Adamson your second-in-command when you promised me the position. What’s the deal, Captain?”
Ex. 2: Everybody turned to stare at Genevieve, who stood stock still, staring down at Vera. They were waiting for a some response, anything, but Genevieve just stared, fire burning in her eyes, until Vera turned her own gaze away, ashamed of what she had said.
Ex. 3: “Fuck off.” David crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair.
“But Dave–”
“I just said fuck off. We’re not discussing this any more. The matter is over with. I’ve made my decision. I’m not going. End of. Now get away from me.”
Body Language
Body language is a Big Deal when it comes to writing anger. You can probably find extensive lists detailing how people express themselves when they’re angry so I won’t be going into that here.
What I will say is that you should be careful that the body language should be appropriate for the type of anger your character is feeling and the way your character typically expresses anger.
A very expressive character, angry and feeling ashamed of themselves, is more likely to slam a fist into a wall than your regal elf character who is haughty and full of themselves and whose clan has been offended by a bumbling orc.
Then again, when that regal character becomes so, so, SO pissed off that they let their usually cool demeanor slip and they DO slam a fist into a wall… now that can be a pretty badass angry moment. Just be sparse when and if you use moments like these.
Writing anger is fun and interesting, but you’ve got to do it right, because it can really ring false in a story. I’ve seen that happen far too often. Consider these tips and be sure to ask me any questions about this or other writing topics if you’ve got them!

“reblogs aren’t important you’re just whiny”
yeah because when you see this
tell me you don’t get annoyed.
tumblr’s algorithm only cares about posts that are reblogged, it doesn’t count likes. posts don’t get promoted or circulated when they only have likes (the way instagram functions), only reblogs matter for increasing reach on tumblr as a platform.
support content creators.
like y'all are fuckin killing tumblr (& content creation) but okay
you think that’s not a lot of notes? that’s cute.
but yeah, tumblr’s system definitely doesn’t advantage non-popular artists, but there’s a big problem from within the community too. i have over 400 followers and i consider myself lucky when more than 2 people reblog my art, so imagine how much worse it is for people with even less followers.
reblog content creators, guys. liking posts doesn’t do anything.

The Qallupilluit are humanoid creatures from Inuit mythology. The Qallupilluit are described as tall marine humanoid creatures having webbing between their fingers, long dark hair, scaly skin similar to that of a fish, and they have razor sharp teeth. They are also known to wear clothes with pouches so they can put children in them and take underwater to devour them. They are often seen under the ice tapping on it to get a childs attention. It is said the waters become harsh and dangerous when they are present.
