The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez

Synopsis in short: a fantasy novel about two boys who escort the moon goddess across the kingdom to try and end a tyrannical reign.

This book is mind blowing. The writing style is nothing like I've ever read before. Every point of view is fluidly used throughout the novel, and his use of the second person perspective is gripping. People describe the structure like a russian doll, where different time periods and stories are weaved together to create a whole narrative.

The descriptions are visceral and poetic in a way that makes even the grotesque scenes beautiful.

And it's gay. There are many love stories central to the book, but the queer one is written with so much heart and realism. It's written with respect and acknowledgement of the significance of the relationship to the characters without overwhelming the main narrative. It felt so real for the world and I it's honestly the kind of queer stories I want to see more of. I want queer stories that are so inherent to the characters that it doesn't need to be about them being gay at all.

I could talk about this book for a long time, but it would be better if you just went and read it. 10/10

what truly gets me is that keema is such a mystery, his entire outward identity a falsehood, so dedicated to his own place in the shadows that not even the narrative knows him. and yet over the course of FIVE DAYS he not only tells jun everything he’s kept from the rest of the world but is psychically linked with him so as to share a mind and a soul. What The Fuck Is Up With That

it was a love story to the blade-dented bone. a people who danced in the moonlight, basking in the love and attention of a god. a god who loved the worship they received too much to bequeath it to another. a woman who loved her subjects so strongly that the gifts she bestowed upon them became curses. a mother who loved her sons so dearly it took her eight generations to stay their bloodthirsty hands. children who yearned for their mother's love so completely it poisoned something inside their very soul. a man who loved a woman enough to be broken for it. a woman who loved him back enough to live with the pain of hoping for the impossible. a daughter who loved her distant mother and a father she'd never met, whom she kept alive through belief alone. an ocean who loved its beloved so strongly it would drown the world in its grief. and of course, a mythic dancer—itself born of impossible love made possible—asking of its immortal parent, let these two men live to love each other; let this story be a love story to its very end.

I am so happy with how this book ended i was about to throw hands if it ended with their deaths. but it was supposed to be a love story

the problem about the spear cuts through water is that there is no book like it. incomparable. in style and prose and genuinely no book has evoked the same kind of emotion and fascination in me that tsctw has.

another problem is that i can’t listen to it for the first time ever again.
