not "the brainwashing sucks" not "the brainwashing was always canon" but a secret third thing (the brainwashing as it was originally depicted in dr0 entailed the rewatching of gruesome murder and tragedy until the despair of it all broke them, which is in fact Saying Something about how violence can and often is used as a tool for psychological torture, which returns in UDG because a CG shows that the warriors of hope were in fact pretty hesitant about killing their first adult and were groomed into becoming who we know them as with junko using constant exposure to real life violence as a tool to groom them with, which is a theme that IS repeated in v3, wherein societal desensitization to violence is why the characters are going through this at all...

meanwhile the dr3 brainwashing is nothing more than vague "subliminals" that manipulate an image, its no longer about the violence causing despair its just magical anime powers [which ironically LESSENS the idea that animation and fiction have a massive impact, since ryota pretty much used his vague subliminal tricks to... brainwash people? ergo its not entirely the anime's own emotional merit considering ryota had to add in something that "heightened the emotions of the scene" that he himself calls akin to brainwashing. which is kind of imo admittance that anime CAN'T stand on its own two feet] and the videos we see that brainwash people just seem so banal to us, like we SAW the tragedy! this is an anime that can get away with showing gore? so why did they have to nerf the brainwashing from "genuine chilling depiction of psychological torture" to "every boring ass babys first brainwashing??" hell if youre so worried about showing gore just dont show us the video?? like the brainwashing WAS GOOD IN DR0 IT WAS. GOOD!!!! WHY DID THEY NERF THE BRAINWASHING WHY DID THEY DO THIS)

No you're super right though! Like tbf I personally feel like there's a discrepancy to be made between "brainwashing" in the realm of what DR3 did in contrast to DR0 and the like's desensitization to violence and despair and choose to use the term "grooming" to differentiate, but you get it!

Like even beyond the context fo the series itself, I feel like the grooming portrayed in DR0, UDG, and V3 are all a very strong commentary on society that hold strong even today. Not in a "video games make you violent" sense but in a "doomscrolling culture and the overall political climate is driving the population into an epidemic of despair and apathy perpetuated by the chronic push by the masses to Look, Look, Do Not Look Away Or You Are Culpable, from which the only real way to escape is to make the active choice to disengage" sense.

And that's a potent message to have, I think, especially in this day and age!

I made a gift guide for danganronpa 1. It needs to be viewed on a computer or tablet or it won't work. I'm hoping to do the same on a separate tab for danganronpa 2 that people can use when 2x2 comes out, and danganronpa v3 if people want that (I'm not the biggest fan of v3 personally, but I'll make it if there's interest). It's kind of fun to see what gifts characters have in common, and a bit easier than navigating to several different wikia pages if you'd really like to avoid giving a disliked or hated gift, and some guides don't include genocide jack/syo. As you can probably imagine, red = hate, light red = dislike, colorless = neutral, light green = like, green = love. I can also work on a colorblind version as well.

I was originally going to have it highlight the characters' preferences when their icon is selected but 1) that would be a lot harder and require more data labels and 2) this way you can see what's actually in your inventory at a given point and decide from there who you should hang out with based on it...

I was surprised at how many characters had unique vendettas against certain items. The gifts in trigger happy havoc are definitely the crappiest (crappiest scenario and crappiest gifts for real) but the way some of these characters are beefing with salt, sunflower seeds, and oblaat is pretty good.

No one cares for the bottled water, which is ridiculous. If someone brought me a bottled water, I'd be elated. Do you know how much water I drink in a year? I mean, even if I told you, you wouldn't believe me.

Anyway, enjoy making these weird little characters happy while I download all the images I need for super danganronpa 2's monomono machine.

If anyone wants to code their own, you're welcome to use a similar idea and look at my code (though please give credit) for other games with a gift giving mechanic, as I know hundred line is one of them. I'm no gatekeeper when it comes to wanting only the best for my favorite characters.
