Dominique Ansel Bakery - Gingerbread Pinecone
This. Dessert. Was. Perfect. The sweet speculoos mousse, nutmeg cake, and ginger-caramel cream balanced out the bitter chocolate spines amazingly. The whole dessert was complex, completed texturally by some magical crunchies at the base. So good!

Bistro Cacao - Brunch Pastries and Tuna Nicoise Salad
January's DC Restaurant Week swung by, and I was able to snag brunch with my best friend from middle school! We were presented with a basket of absolutely luscious pastries, including a croissant, raisin bread, and chocolate croissant. We both opted for the Tuna Nicoise Salad, which was an amazing choice! The tuna was cooked to medium-rare perfection, and I could taste a bit of char from the grill. The salad was also chock-full of goodies like string beans, potatoes, and hard-boiled eggs, making for variable and delectable bites!

Dan Izakaya - Lunch!
Is there a restaurant you always visit when you're in a certain area? Whenever I go home, I always make sure to make a stop at Dan Izakaya for a solid Japanese meal. I've blogged about the Asari Ramen before, but Dan also has a ton of yummy rice bowls! I had the Uni and Ikura bowl; the creamy uni and salty ikura were a real treat!

This gorgeous seafood pancake can be found at Lighthouse Tofu in Rockville. Though a far cry from the fantastic Korean restaurants found in Santa Clara, CA, this pancake was a reminder of home. A generous helping of green onion, squid, and krab was embedded in the wonderfully crispy-chewy dough of the pancake. Along with the dipping sauce, this made a great appetizer for our meal!

Patisserie Poupon - Ham and Cheese Croissant
One Sunday Farmer's Market I opted for one of Patisserie Poupon's savory (but no less decadent!) pastries, a ham and cheese croissant. Layers of buttery flaky dough wrapped around a simple but tasty ham and cheese filling. Yum!

House of Milae - Banchan, BBQ Pork, Tuna Kimbab, Seafood Pancake
House of Milae proudly declares itself to be the only Korean restaurant in Bethesda, so one night, curious and a little homesick for Asian food, I tried several dishes. They were great! I especially liked that the BBQ Pork was quite lean compared to that of other restaurants I have tried. I can't wait to return to try other dishes!

Bangkok Garden - Pad Thai and Thai Iced Tea
I used to dislike Thai food, but during college it really began to grow on me. I now regularly crave yummy Thai noodle dishes and curries; the combination of so many textures and flavors makes things interesting! I ate these pad thai noodles at a local Bethesda Thai joint called Bangkok Garden. Washing the noodles down with a cool glass of Thai iced tea completes the meal!

Coworker's Amazing Pizza
Can I tell you a secret? I love pizza. I LOVE pizza. About half my meals at UCLA were pizzas from the Italian dorm eatery, Cafe 1919. I've since cut down on all that cheese (because I cook more, and for my health). So when my coworker invited the lab to eat homemade pizza, of course I was overjoyed. We demolished several pizzas with different combinations of prosciutto, turkey, smoked mozzarella, onions, mushrooms, artichokes, and arugula. So good!!

Founding Farmers - Brunch
This was a wonderful brunch with my coworkers that made me feel very grown up (compared to brunch in the dining halls, anyway)! We started out with piping hot beignets, dipping the eggy morsels in a trio of heavenly sauces. I ordered the crab eggs benedict, which contained perfectly poached eggs, toasted English muffins, and lots of crab. The hash browns were spiced up with the addition of leeks, which made a great combination!

Patisserie Poupon - Kouign Amann
This is just one of the many pastries I have consumed from Patisserie Poupon's stall at the Bethesda Central Farm Market. I always go for the produce (the tomatoes in the summer are amazing) but I can't help but leave with one or two pastries as well. Kouign amann is super decadent. Imagine a rich, soft croissant with extra butter and sugar between the multitudes of layers. A crispy-chewy sugar crust takes the experience over the top. These are dangerous!

Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu
Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu is located just down the street from Finch Station in North York. Its staff are extremely friendly, enthusiastically greeting customers as they came in. On top of that, service was quite quick.
I ordered the kimchi soon tofu at a regular spicy level. Shortly after ordering, various side dishes were brought out. The most standout dish was the beansprouts, which were tossed in sesame oil and lightly salted; I thought the flavors were perfectly balanced.
The main dish was brought out still bubbling in its stone bowl, and it was accompanied by a bowl of purple rice, which I found uniquely appetizing. (I am not the biggest fan of rice.) Soon tofu was unfamiliar territory to me, but the experience was not unpleasant. I could not complain about anything, but I did wish there was more meat than the few slivers of pork in the broth.
My overall experience at Buk Chang Dong Soon Tofu was, in a word, good. Considering the low prices (I paid slightly over $8 CAD for the entire meal), I would definitely suggest this place for a filling meal with friends.

Banh Mi Boys
Hello, Dean here. This is another post about a place in downtown Toronto.
Banh Mi Boys is an urban take on Vietnamese banh mi. Here, I ordered the duck confit banh mi with a jicama-papaya side salad. The bread was great; it had a crunchy crust and fluffy inside with a slight hint of buttery flavor. The duck confit was extremely salty, but that is due to the way that it is prepared. The jicama-papaya salad was the highlight for me. It was perfectly crisp and refreshing, and it reminded me so much of my mom's cooking.
Other menu items include assorted baos and kimchi fries. My friend's pork belly bao looked very appetizing, and I would definitely return to try it if I weren't on keto now.
Ultimately, if you are looking to try something hip/fusiony, hit up Banh Mi Boys. However, if you are looking for tasty, traditional banh mi and not spend $10, head to Chinatown and eat at Nguyen Huong Food.

Vace - Italian Cold Cut
This picture really doesn't do this sandwich justice. Generous layers of salami, ham, and mortadella paired with pickled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, and mozzarella on fresh focaccia bread. Somehow I always manage to make myself save half for later, but it's pretty tough to do!

Haribo Tropifrutti
One of my labmates recently returned from a trip to Germany and brought back Haribo for us! The Tropifrutti snacks in front were jelly-like, with a sort of dried crunchy/sugary crust (tastes better than it sounds... a lot better). The back row came from a different bag (can't remember the name, whoops). They were a strawberry gummi and two licorice pieces. Licorice... it was weird.
Isn't it interesting how licorice is much more popular in other countries and not so much in the US? My labmate also said that in Germany, there is even this special salty licorice for adults that comes with a health warning because it can cause heart problems!

Din Tai Fung - Green Melon and Shrimp Dumplings
A very interesting addition to the Din Tai Fung Menu- dumplings filled with a mixture of green melon and sweet shrimp. It's weird to think of soup dumplings this way, but they really were light and refreshing! I wouldn't make a meal of them, but an order doesn't hurt to break up the rich porkiness of the regular dumplings.

Westside Tavern
I can't believe I haven't blogged about this absolutely amazing meal my parents treated me to at Westside Tavern when I graduated from UCLA. Seriously, just look at the photos (I forgot some of the dish names and I think the menu has changed slightly... oops). This was the best meal I had in LA- good food with great company!
