「with a fried egg on top」

warnings: kageyama tobio x f!reader. fluff.

kageyama tobio likes curry. it’s easy to make, it’s methodological, and it’s irrefutably delicious.

“stick your pointer finger into the rice. it should come up a little below your first joint.”

when tobio was younger, kazuyo-san embraced all responsibility regarding miwa and tobio’s well-being. kazuyo-san did his best to ensure that his grandchildren were well fed and well loved, and was diligent in not spoiling them.

“good, just let the rice cooker do its thing. start chopping the potatoes, carrots, onions. sweetheart, trust me, freezing it works. be careful with the knife and don’t touch your eyes.”

in middle school, miwa started learning how to cook and tobio how to wash dishes. if miwa was out or had exams to cram, tobio would always find just enough rice in the cooker, two blocks of curry roux on the counter, and some carrots, potatoes, and pork in the fridge.

“take the apple. peel the skin. cut it into quarters. take out the core. then grate it. watch your fingers.”

as tobio started staying for extra practice and his appetite increased again, a small container was added. it contained two hard boiled eggs, a sticky note on top: “you know the drill. make sure the stove is off after.”

“now wash your hands well. the oil in the pot should be hot. grab the ginger and garlic we made earlier, and dump ‘em all in there.”

tobio knows the drill. he’s learned pretty early on that a good bowl of curry never makes itself.

“put the pork and onions in. fry ‘em around a bit. don’t worry, the oil won’t splatter. now show me. okay, good, add the water now. then the apple, honey, and milk. okay, good.”

by the time that miwa started apprenticing in the city, tobio got sick of boiled eggs. in some sense, he’s always been mature for his age; he knew that it can’t be helped that the eggs were a few days old sometimes, green yolks and rubbery whites.

“now add the rest of the veggies. yup, all of ‘em. cover it, medium-low heat. set the timer. fifteen minutes should be good. let’s try frying an egg while we wait.”

so kageyama tobio taught himself how to fry eggs. ten year old tobio first learned to savour scorched yolks and toasted shells. thirteen year old tobio found that he preferred 3 minutes 45 seconds for breakfast and 3 minutes 22 seconds for dinner.

“take the pan and put a little oil on there. medium heat. grab an egg.”

the night he received his karasuno jersey, kageyama made the first good fried egg in his life, crispy edges and all. it was a little ugly, but he ate it well.

“the oil should be ready. remember how you helped me crack eggs when you were younger? do that.”

by the time that kageyama tobio settled into his professional career, he was consistent in egg frying. he’d also learned to make his own curry roux, honey, milk, orange peels, and all. 

“yup, right in the pan, gently. okay, good good.”

the first thing that kageyama ever made you was curry, served on freshly cooked rice and a fried egg on top. that night, under the kitchen light, the child in him couldn’t help but grin when you told him it was the best you’ve ever had after just one bite. because he knows it’s true.

it’s curry made with love, just like kazuyo-san did.

that gorgeous smile, the beyond the top physique, on top of all that, an impeccably tailored suit…your content calendar is set for the next two weeks. it’s never too hard to please the perpetually starved fans of kageyama tobio, but even then, they’d probably appreciate seeing something that wasn’t curry-sponsored.

especially when that something is the national team’s partnership with watchmaker omega.

(why a maker of watches would want anything to do with volleyball players—professional or otherwise—you’ll never know, but at least you’ve successfully secured the first and, if the photoshoots so far are anything to go by, definitely not the last luxury partnership for the jva.)

the camera flashes relentlessly, shutters going off at lightning speed. the photographer is dead set on snapping up every single speculatively detailed micro-movement running along the setter’s face and long, corded fingers.

not many in their field can claim to have had the elusive ikemen setter of the japanese men’s national volleyball team standing before their lens without a volleyball or, god forbid, a plate of curry in hand. even less, if any, can say that they’ve had the volleyball wunderkind modelling—actually modelling!—so compliantly for them in a three piece suit and tie.
