"I followed exactly what your text said," Amelia shrugged, setting a bouquet of supermarket flowers down on the kitchen counter. "Eggs and white flower."

"Stupid voice-to-text," Kai shook their head, leaning onto their hands. "But you could've used context clues to figure out what I meant."

"I don't bake; how was I supposed to know?"

"Can I trust you enough to send you back for actual flour? Like, the baking type?"

"You may wanna send me a picture just to be safe." Kai chuckled and pulled out their phone.

"How many years in school, and you don't know what flour is?"

"How many years in school, and you can't type?" They picked up the hand towel beside them and chucked it at Amelia. "You know, some people may have just accepted the romantic gesture."

"That's what we're calling it? A romantic gesture?"

"Maybe I just wanted to get you flowers."

"Maybe you need to head back to the store." The neurosurgeon rolled her eyes and tossed the towel back at her partner. "Maybe Facetime me once you're in the aisle."

I think a lot about what E.R. Fightmaster tweeted back in May of 2022, "It is important that we [queer people] see ourselves [on screen], our potential and our joy." They, as well as Caterina Scorsone, have discussed at length why queer relationships and characters on television are not just nice to have but necessary—how genuinely healing that can be for (young) queer people to see.

And yet...

For a show that touts itself as socially aware, Grey's continues to be unfairly malicious toward their queer ships and characters, both past and present, during a time when (young) queer people desperately need the exact opposite. Additionally, I have witnessed these continued misalignments breed more hatred and bigotry amongst so-called "fans" than I think anyone is willing to admit to. Amid all the cruelty coming from the U.S. government (and internationally), all the fear-mongering and hatred being thrown at anything remotely non-heteronormative within our culture, and the waves of canceled queer TV shows, this is not what anyone needs. Grey's is a melodrama, yes, but its queer characters carry a disproportionate amount of that burden given their consistently relegated position within the overall narrative.

I've tried to be patient. I could recognize that the Grey's writers had a lot to juggle with Ellen leaving, Kelly leaving, Krista leaving, and introducing the new interns all in one go. And, despite it all, I still believe this might end well for Kai and Amelia... But I really can't keep doing this to myself.

I have loved this show since I was 15. It helped me in accepting my sexuality and then, through Kai, my gender identity, too. I have made incredible friendships thanks to this show. But if something doesn't change soon (and I mean soon) I might be done. This is not the joy E.R. spoke of, it hurts too much; this is not the potential for which queer people are destined—we deserve better.

I genuinely don't think Kai would be this cold. Visit Amelia, have sex and and just dump her, knowing her situation with her sisters and her issues. This is NOT the Kai we all know, this Kai just came in one ep and threw everything under the bus.

Caterina and E.R. support #Kaimelia and genuinely seem to like it !?( Not just faking it for marketing promotion) , even the actors like each-other.SO What the heck is going on?!

I’m so mad right now… why does greys always do this to their LGBTQ+ characters?

I don't even know, dude, I don't even know.

Like, okay. In the moment of the Calzona shit, I was like what the fuck is this, but as I've gotten older and have rewatched, that storyline isn't actually as bad or poorly written as I originally thought and is actually pretty well planned out.

But Kai and Amelia? I don't get it. Like, Kai literally showed up at Seattle Grace because they couldn't sleep after ending things with Amelia and then we somehow end up here with them taking a job in London without talking to Amelia and saying their relationship works because of space???? Like what???

My only hope for this storyline is that E.R. has been filming recently and Caterina has not talked about Kaimelia in a sense that makes me think they're done, but it's Grey's so who knows.
