the waves lapping against the small boat were almost deafening as you gazed wistfully up at the night sky. the twinkling of the stars was nothing compared to the lights you had seen every single year without fail on the day of your birth. leaving that tower was the best decision you ever could have made, it led you to ren. and now here he was, showing you the lights you had been so desperate to see for as long as you could remember. he understood you, and he never judged you for even a second.
as the first lantern floated into the inky sky, your heart was pounding in your ears. the silence was almost deafening, but it didn't matter to you at all. the countless days of watching from a distance and isolation were over, now that ren was by your side. you were finally where you meant to be. lifting a lantern into the air that had sunken low enough to reach from your boat, you looked back at him to see-
he had one for you.
in ren's eyes, he realized he loved you the moment he saw you smile under the warm lantern light. he had spent so long living in a blur and chasing down a daydream that he never considered he'd truly love. but with you by his side, he was exactly where he was meant to go. the fog in his mind had lifted and you were all that mattered.
the way your eyes sparkled as the two of you took the lantern he had hidden from you to surprise you with and lifted it into the air from the small boat in the harbor, he would never be able to forget such a beautiful sight in all his days.
his worldview had shifted completely, now that you were within his sights. a thief like him falling for someone who didn't know they were the royal heir, it was a fairytale right out of a movie.

it doesnât take a genius to figure out why you showed up at his doorstep, soaking wet and shivering from the cold rain, brushing past him without even asking him if it was okay to enter beforehand. you donât need to ask when so many different scenarios of this exact situation have happened more times than either of you can count. you even have your own toiletries in his bathroom and clothing mixed with his laundry, he introduces you as his roommate at this point.
even so, alban doesnât mind, his home is always open to you for any reason you could think of: you want to hang out, you need a place to crash at, youâre running from the cops, or in todayâs case as is often, you got into a fight with your mom.
(surprised to hear the third reason? donât be, youâre a thief just like alban, just not as good as he is. you argue that he has the advantage of being a âphantom catboyâ or whatever. itâs how you both met, two kids who grew up in the urban slums that never slept, swiping anything that wasnât nailed down to make a living or just for the fun of it.)

âyou fought with your mom again?â thereâs almost a teasing tone in his voice, like he was excited to hear the latest update of your rapidly declining bond with her. itâs okay though, you know he means well and is only trying to make light of everything going on. âwhat happened this time?â

as soon as he catches wind that youâre hurt, heâd sprint to your location if he could. itâs not even a question of how hurt you actually are, he would treat you like youâre the most fragile creature in the world.
shu would help you get up, making sure you can at least stand with his support before taking you home as if it were a life or death situation.
once you sit down, youâre not allowed to get up again. shu would bring you every single thing you want or could ever need. ice packs, heating pads, water, food, etc.
if you need to go to a doctor for the vague injury i wrote this as so the reader can make it whatever they want, youâll be getting the best care possible
