Chubby penguins get put on a 30-minute walk to keep them trim through the winter

To help keep their penguins trim during the winter months, Japan’s Asahiyama Zoo has introduced The Penguin Walk twice a day from December to March. Each walk lasts about 30 minutes and helps penguins to stay fit and healthy during the winter months when they tend to be less active and accumulate more fat. Visitors to the zoo can watch up close as these feathered friends get their waddle on, with the birds accustomed to the attention they receive every day.

‘The penguins were really professional and ignored their adoring fans and the constant clicking of cameras’, said photographer Paul Brown. ‘They had obviously done this before and didn’t need any coaxing along the path. They stayed clear of the crowd at all times, but never once did they appear scared, taking the whole event in their stride, or should that be waddle’.
