Aaaand my dear puppets. I think they actually look brilliant in this setting and the mood lighting just fits here amazingly well.

The finished model of the Blackdoodle theatre (yes, it does need another name).
Miniatures built by a Turkish artist and miniaturist Ali Alamedy.
That’s just absolutely inspiring in every sense of the word. Definitely gave me a push in the direction I’m taking with my project.
You can find more of his work on Facebook and Instagram

The Third Year & All The Crazy That Comes With It
Okay, this blog has been long due for an update, so I’ll try to do a bit of a catch up (aka long post ahead)
While the summer has been amazing - got a job, enjoyed the sunshine, explored many pubs of Brum and got to see my family - haven’t done much regarding my dissertation or uni work in general.
Dissertation matters weren’t moving at all, because I was really stuck on my topic and what I actually want to write about. Initial idea was writing about fantasy genre (why is it so appealing to people, its relation to concept art, etc.). But I wasn’t moving with that anywhere, I don’t know why.
So, when the term started, we were each assigned a diss. tutor/supervisor to have weekly meetings with and who would give us some feedback or help out with any questions. That’s what helped me the most, actually. At the first meeting, I just laid out that ok I’ve no idea what I want to do anymore and then after a bit of talk we came to a decision on my topic, which was still related (maybe even more) to what I like and what I do.
Witches, man.
There’s so much you can use and write about. I’ll be focusing on the portrayal of a witch in popular culture/illustration/animation, how did the stereotype form, draw examples from the history of witchracft and such. Mind you, even tho I’ll cover a little bit of essay on real life history and events, my priority is to analyze the portrayal of a witch as a fantasy character, in various fictitious contexts.
I’ll probably have another post for dissertation stuff only, so, that’s enough on that topic for now.
Moving on, there’s my practical project... which aghhhh I can’t find time for! Frustrating since I genuinely want to start working on it and I love the idea so much, but my time management is awful and there’s so so many things to do and so many books to read and drawings to draw.
To briefly describe what it’s gonna be: a diorama of an abandoned opera house, housing a community of ghostly puppets/dolls. Two of those I’ve already made as my previous uni project, the forever newlyweds, who own the opera house.
They’re stil in need of a few touch ups, but the priority is to get as much done as possible before the deadline in early January. (You’d say there’s loads of time left, but you never met me to be horrified of my time management skills and non-existent sleeping pattern).
Anyway, once I begin the big works, I’ll keep y’all updated.
As for now, laters taters.
Illustration Degree Show! + a couple of other awesome things in fashion, textiles and events.
Also, a good idea for attracting attention - strong scented flowers. Even though I wasn’t too intersted in graphics, that stand with lilies actually made me go back and take a look. And having anything else to take with you, like stickers or mini prints, besides business cards is also a plus - the artist sticks in you memory better.
All challenge posts in one place!
A character design challenge I did, would love to do something like that again!
i dont really draw fanart and i barely practice digital sooo here’s a coraline doodle!
Moodboards
Newlyweds/Swan Queen/Characters moodboard
Opera moodboard
And here it is, the final thing. The Newlyweds, the Bride and the Groom. Very happy with the way they turned out, even if most of it was through trial and error (meaning a few limbs snapped off, faces painted and repainted, etc etc)
The Bride post...aaand she also doesn’t have a name. Does she really need one tho. I don’t know. Happy to know I’ll be working on this project more later in the third year though.
Groot Lil’ Helper. Also, it’s ridiculous how quick my room gets cluttered. The closer to the deadline, the more it looks like a battle scene.
Oh the many mistakes that were made... I don’t think anything has sucked out more life force out of me than the making of this tiny frock coat... Fitted and refitted...
