There are some who heaped praise onto Jeff Flake for his condemnation of Donald Trump, for his decision to call it quits instead of playing to xenophobes and sycophants.
I was one of those people. But now look. Joe Arpaio, the criminal sheriff who created what he called “concentration camps” for his prisoners, who made pregnant women give birth in shackles, who made men wear pink underwear to humiliate them, is now running for Senate. Flake’s decency, while great, only places his seat within reach of a horrible, disgusting extremist.
Will he win? I’m skeptical. He’s a fringe figure in the vein of Roy Moore, and his scandals, while out in the open, are equally as horrific. Arizona is also rather purple, giving any Democrat a fighting chance even against a typical Republican. It’s likely that a typical Democrat could swipe this seat, as Arpaio’s reputation for brutality and torture is off-putting to many.
But this shows how little the Republican Party values decency today, that a man like Arpaio could announce a run for Senate with relatively little pushback.
