Been rewatching TNG a lot lately, and I've noticed that almost every time someone is on the Holodeck, it's Holodeck 3. (I say "almost" because I haven't double-checked every Holodeck mention.)

Have the crew considered just shutting down Holodeck 3 in particular? Seems like they'd have a lot fewer issues that way.

I've also wondered why the Holodecks (and Holosuites) even have the ability to turn off the safeties. This would take care of the rest of the issues, I'm sure. Worf may not like it, but too bad.

My guess is that officially the holodeck safety protocols cannot be turned off. Then of course there's always someone on a ship who wants the danger to be real, and they program their adventure without compulsory safety protocols. If they don't program it carefully, the feature that lets you turn the safety protocols off leaks into other programs. That leads to failing safety protocols and the unpredictable situations.

Especially when the computer is given a verbal command to adapt something I assume there is a certain potential for errors that would be smaller if the person wrote and tested the code before applying it.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

*traditional is a flawed term that im using here for the sake of brevity, not because i agree with it or think its valid. think the things that your capitalist uncle would consider "a real job" (even if he may not respect it); anything in a physical office, but also healthcare workers, teachers, secretarial work, cleaning staff, childcare workers, professional athletics, etc. *non-traditional would be the opposite, aka things your capitalist uncle would not consider to be "a real job". this does not mean i think your job is not real or valid, it means it is outside of the bounds of what modern society deems traditional and you've faced unique struggles as a result. artists and creatives who live on commissions, any kind of influencer, sex workers etc. are examples of what should go here.

is it necessary to watch the og show (star trek '66) b4 watching tng? or are they separate installments?

tng is pretty good so far but i wanna know if i should also start the og before watching tng

it's not necessary. You can enjoy TNG without knowledge of TOS.

I certainly did, and still do.

You can certainly gain a lot from watching all of Star Trek in order of release but it is not necessary.

Honestly, probably the best social tip I could ever give you guys is literally just ask. Need to make a doctor's appointment but don't know how? Call the doctor's office and ask. Don't know the meaning of what someone said? Ask them. Don't understand the instructions you were given? Ask them to repeat or clarify. This has literally never failed me, no one's gotten angry, no one's refused to answer.

Even in situations where you think it might not work, I once accidentally missed a deadline to accept a job offer, so I called and asked if they could reset it and they did. Just today I called a doctor and asked how to schedule an appointment, the lady told me how, and then I did it. Didn't know if someone was being sarcastic or not, so I asked and they told me. Just ask.

The library has themed surprise book bags you can check out for the summer holidays.

Each has five items and I picked a bag with the "suspense" theme for ages 12 and up.

Not sure that I will read each one but I'll give the one with the dragon a try and the non-fiction one about the Tagesschau - which is THE German news show

Last year I picked a bag themed for grown-up readers and that was not a good fit, still I enjoy the playful experience.
