‘Photography’s loss, art’s gain.’
New York, 1976
‘Photography is used as a secondary tool to express a contemporary art sensibility.’ (Shelley Rice) // As opposed to Fine Arts, encompassing painting and sculpture. // As opposed to ‘the single image which in and of itself is the visual expression of a sensibility.’ // As opposed to the room which was made in (contemporary) arts for (something along the lines of) photography, while photography itself had to stay outside, and wait.

This image, titled No. 280, is one of the four Sonderkommando photographs. Taken by an Auschwitz prisoner, they reveal not only the use of gas chambers, but more generally the horrors of what life was like inside a Nazi extermination camp. Taken from inside the gas chambers, No. 280 “shows” the burning of corpses by Sonderkommandos, work units of fellow captives forced to work the gas chambers. The EU is an imperfect, unorganised, undetermined and unfocused union – everything the Third Reich was not. In order to keep working on the prosperity and peace of and for the people of Europe, we must never forget how and why the EU is what it’s not.

Twenty years ago, we built a tiny village, somewhere in the woods of the Ardennes. In my mind, it still stands. This February, I will build the Human Village in the Zoniënwoud.
Together with a group of school kids and families, we will look for branches and leaves, words and dreams, just like our ancestors did, so many millennia ago. Their villages grew into cities, cities who took over the world.
But what if we would have to leave our villages behind again, pack up our tents and go?
The Human Village will be part of the Bewogen Festival, an arts festival focusing on the encounter of people on the move and the sedentary inhabitants of Brussels and will come about with the support of GC WaBo (part of n22), the commune of Watermaal-Bosvoorde.
Over the last six months, I’ve sent numerous people through the #streets of #brussels on a Photographic-Therapeutic #walk . Maybe you were one of them. During those Walks, as part of their Walking protocol, the #Reporters generated #images of what affected them in their surroundings. These images resulted in a series of Phantasmata.
I will be showing the Phantasmata at @recyclartbxl on December 5 and January 31.
