Zuko deserves Katara’s consequential hostility in Book 3, period.
What makes Zuko so deserving of Katara’s prolonged hostility such as death threat , schadenfreude over his firebending loss when Zuko announced Team Avatar that he lost his firebending and jab at his firebending ability when Zuko explained to Katara that his firebending becomes weak by remarking that he is not good as he think he is and lack of gratitude when he saved her from the debris of the Western Air Temple ceiling and refusing to drink to Zuko’s health after Zuko held off Azula and agreed that Zuko does not deserve Team Avatar drinking to his health to be brutally honest is that Zuko did NOT voice his regret for breaking Katara’s trust after he made her believe that he changed for the better, he only voiced his regret for betraying Iroh when he is with Azula towards the end of Crossroads of Destiny and did NOT declare his plan to Ozai that he will apologize to Katara for breaking her trust, only declaring his plan to apologise to Iroh for betraying him. He didn’t say: “I should not break your trust after I made you believe that I have changed for the better back in Ba Sing Se” to Katara during his first attempt to join Team Avatar- the FIRST thing he SHOULD have done during his first attempt to join Team Avatar since he MADE Katara the first person to trust him that he changed for the better . There IS a difference between saying: “I have changed, I am good now.” and “I should not break your trust after I made you believe that I have changed for the better and should not repay your compassionate offer to heal my scar by siding Azula against you back in Ba Sing Se ” .
Even though Toph detected Zuko's sincerity during his first attempt to join Team Avatar via her seismic ability moments after Katara told Team Avatar what he did in Ba Sing Se, disproving Katara's claim that Zuko is untrustworthy and see through her hurt feelings keeping her from thinking clearly, resulting in Katara being slightly remorseful as she thinks about her words and looks towards Aang. Aang adamantly does not want Zuko to join their group, Katara gets on Aang's side and Toph expresses her frustration over the fact they are blinded by their hurt feelings. I still think Zuko deserves to face the consequences of what he did in Ba Sing Se, because Toph's seismic ability REALISTICALLY will NOT automatically erase Katara's grudge towards Zuko and Zuko owed Katara DIRECT apologies for breaking her trust and wrongly repay her compassionate offer to heal his scar after making her believe that he changed for the better even though it is not the first time Toph's ability to see through peoples' psyche as the first time was with Jet.
Moreover, there IS a difference between Zuko’s words: “Listen, I know I didn't explain myself very well yesterday, I've been through a lot in the last few years, and it's been hard. But I'm realizing that I had to go through all those things to learn the truth. I thought I had lost my honor, and that somehow my father could return it to me. But I know now that no one can give you your honor. It's something you earn for yourself, by choosing to do what's right. All I want to do now is play my part in ending this war, and I know my destiny is to help you restore balance to the world” and apologizing to Katara : “I am extremely sorry for breaking your trust after making you believe I changed for the better back in Ba Sing Se and repay your compassionate offer to heal my scar by siding Azula against you back in Ba Sing Se and I am willing to make up for my heinous mistake”. His intervention to stop the Combustion Man’s from killing Aang is NOT enough as he NEEDS to apologize to Katara first for reshaping her current perception of him as dangerously untrustworthy via his morally regressive actions in Ba Sing Se.
Thirdly, there is a difference between his promise to Team Avatar that he will never let Team Avatar down and apologizing to Katara : “I am extremely sorry for breaking your trust after making you believe I changed for the better back in Ba Sing Se and repay your compassionate offer to heal my scar by siding Azula against you back in Ba Sing Se and I am willing to make up for my heinous mistake”. As long as Zuko owed Katara direct apologies for what he did to her in Ba Sing Se , Katara’s mean spiritedness towards Zuko is warranted , not just well deserved as her treatment towards Zuko cause him to be fed up with prolonged hostility towards him in the Southern Raiders episode and confronted Katara why she remained hostile to him and Katara explained to him the exact reason why and her explanation will prompt Zuko to realise not only he betrayed Iroh , he also broke her trust back there then asked her in a NON begrudging tone : “What can I do to make up to you?” 4 episodes after Zuko joined Team Avatar .
Unless he directly apologised to Katara first his heinous actions he committed against her during his first attempt to join Team Avatar and actively tried to make up for what he did to her and her trust yet Katara remained stubbornly hostile to him, then at this hypothetical point, he does not deserve Katara’s stubborn hostility. And the fandom’s sympathy and emotional pain for Zuko will be valid and their criticism directed at Katara for her stubborn hostility towards Zuko in Book 3 will be valid and warranted. Zuko’s acts of teaching Aang firebending, not laying a finger on Aang in the Sun Warriors Civilization, helping Sokka to get her father out of jail, saving Katara from the falling debris of the Western Air Temple and holding Azula off are NOT tied to Zuko’s direct apologies to Katara for his heinous actions against her in Crossroads of Destiny and her trust since he did NOT apologised to her for his said heinous actions against her during his first attempt to join Team Avatar and before he successfully joined Team Avatar in the aftermath of the Combustion Man’s death, in other words, beforehand.
I saw one fan told the members of Avatar the Last Airbender Reddit complained that Katara is unreasonably harsh to Zuko and another fan remarked that she is too harsh to Zuko. Katara is only like that when she asked Zuko to bring her mother back only which is irrelevant to what he did in Ba Sing Se- something to which I cannot deny, her asking Zuko to reconquer Ba Sing Se in the name of the Earth King and threatening Zuko of the consequences of repeating the same mistake of killing Aang and explaining to Zuko why she remained hostile to Zuko which is what he did in Ba Sing Se are reasonable, because her actions are proportionate to what he did in Ba Sing Se.
The only thing that Zuko does not deserve to face is being requested by Katara to bring her mother back only. Such criticism directed at Katara for indirectly blaming Zuko for the loss of her mother is valid and warranted.
Zuko should know better that not only did he betrayed Iroh, he broke Katara’s trust and repaid her compassionate offer to heal his scar by siding Azula against her, period. If Zuko can remember his act of betraying Iroh in Crossroads of Destiny, remember Azula’s act of killing Aang with her lightning ⚡️, EVEN remember the special properties of Katara’s spirit oasis water 💧 she used to offer to heal his scar which lead to Zuko suspecting that Katara resurrecting Aang and led to him to sending the Combustion Man to kill Aang , so can he for his act of breaking Katara’s trust after he MADE her believe that he changed for the better and then broke her trust and wrongfully repaid her compassionate offer to heal his scar. In the words of @avatarfandompolice ‘s rant about the toxic Voltron fandom, fans who bashed Katara for her consequential hostility towards Zuko in Book 3 are the hands-down the most immature, hateful, and unintelligent and worst of all, entitled and morally repugnant fandom for any tv show ever. It is filled to the brim with people pushing the limits of stupidity, failing to show even an inkling of observational skills or emotional intelligence or critical thinking skills . They are so focused on what they want which is Katara unconditionally forgiving Zuko for his moral regression in Ba Sing Se AND owing her apologies for his moral regression in Ba Sing Se that no variation from their vision is tolerated whatsoever. The fandom is a breeding ground for toxic groupthink. The Avatar the Last Airbender fandom was just a platform for them to attach themselves to a viewpoint and call others toxic who didn't share it. The fans are desperate, toxic crybabies who can't display strength in any function of life besides their act of valuing good looks by SHIELDING Zuko from the consequences of his heinous actions he did to Katara and her trust AND owing her direct apologies for his said heinous actions. Or even better, they ARE sick in the head and need professional help right now. Anyone who defends them ARE vile apologists and ARE complicit in shielding Zuko from the consequences of OWING Katara well deserved apologies he committed against her in Crossroads of Destiny prior to the Southern Raiders episode. They too ARE sick in the head and need professional help. They are NO different from Cameron Herrin sympathisers, period. What makes these sympathizes similar to each other is that both of them shield wrongdoers who squandered 2nd chances given by the other parties (Katara in Crossroads of Destiny and local authorities respectively) from the consequences of their wrongdoings (Katara's hostility in Book 3 and Cameron Herrin serving jail time for 24 years). Bashing Katara for being consequently hostile to Zuko in Book 3, complaining that she was mean to Zuko in book 3, remarking that she shouldn't be mean to Zuko in book 3 are NO different from Cameron Herrin sympathizers who signed a petition to get him out of jail.
Huh! When I was a 10 years old kid, my instincts tells me that there is something MISSING from Zuko which are his DIRECT apologies for breaking her trust after he MADE her the FIRST person to change for the better and wrongly repaid her compassionate offer to heal his scar by siding Azula against Katara and is able to distinguish his canonical words and his direct apologies to Katara prior to the Southern Raiders episode and the fact there are young adult fans are against her for being hostile towards Zuko in book 3 on the justification of "zUKo CHAnged aNd KAtara Is MEan to HIm prove my points that they are immature and stupid and lacking critical thinking skills, yes stupid, for young adults like them cannot distinguish his canonical words and his direct apologies to Katara prior to the Southern Raiders episode coming from a kids show and especially the fact they are young adults who ARE supposed to have critical thinking skills! My instincts ALWAYS told me that my stance of Zuko deserving Katara’s hostility in Book 3 is justified all along and those motherfuckers ARE always in the wrong to oppose Katara’s hostility towards Zuko in Book 3 given what actually happened in the show.
