“Christ. I hope this bubble works as a magnifying glass eventually. It might be sunny, but it’s cold as fuck.”
“As long as we don’t get to the ‘frying like ants’ stage.”
“Me, too.”
“You know him? Christian?”
“I--I used to. That’s not Christian anymore, not really. I was part of the Guilty Remnant.”
“Yeah. Yeah, Christian.”
“He killed my mom.”
“I am so sorry.”
Chris nodded. “Now that I know I’m not going crazy, I feel much better,” he said with a small smile.
Kat gave the young man a reassured smile. It was good to see that she was able to help him through that, even if she wasn’t technically supposed to. And it was a little affirming to do so without having to go against what she believed.
Chris nodded. “Yeah, Levi.” He didn’t know the other man well, but he’d spent enough time in the club to have a passing acquaintanceship with him. “We can stop by the club, see if he’s there. Then he can tell us where Jack is.”
Katerina took a deep breath, closing her eyes long enough to steady herself before nodding. “Okay.” Kat knew there was no guarantee that Jack would even want to see her, but she needed to see him. “Thank you.”
Chris offered her a small smile at the attempt at comfort. He appreciated it, even if it did little to calm his nerves.
Kat pulled her hand back, moving to write into the notebook once more. Are you feeling better? She asked, showing him the notebook. He seemed to have calmed down some since she’d first come to him. It was good to see, but she wanted to make sure the high wasn’t terrorizing him like before.
“I pissed off the antichrist and he decided to get personal revenge. Because that’s a thing that happens now, I guess.”
“Christian, right? He’s the--he’s the antichrist. What did he do to you?”
“And you have a child that you need to worry about soon.”
“Yes. I don’t know if it’s better to get the mark to take care of them or if it’ll just cause more trouble.’
“We need to figure a way out of here.”
“Have any ideas?”
“I hate that I’m considering getting that mark.”
“Me too.”
Chris reread the sentence a few times, shaking his head. “Guess so,” he agreed. He was usually pretty laid back (drugs, he found, did that to a person), but with everything going on, he found himself a little freaked. If this was a religious apocalypse, like Kat seemed to think, he was fucked.
It was easy to tell that the young man was unsettled at the least. Kat paused for a moment before reaching out to rest her hand on his forearm, giving it a light reassuring squeeze.
“I don’t think anyone can help me.”
“What’s going on?”
He studied her face for a moment, trying to decipher just what that meant. Had her husband moved on while she was with the GR? If he had, what were the chances that he’d actually give a shit when they did find him? Figuring they could cross that bridge when they came to it, Chris latched onto the name instead. It sounded vaguely familiar, but he didn’t think it was anyone he knew. “Is he related to that club guy?”
“Levi?” Kat answered. There was a beat before she was nodding. She felt bad for not believing Levi about the GR. “Yes. They’re family. He’d probably know where Jack is.” Kat took a deep breath as she felt her nerves come back and wash over her. The man was being very helpful and even when she was in the GR he had been kind. Breaking down on him wouldn’t be right.
“No,” Chris sighed. “I guess it isn’t.” He wasn’t sure what was important anymore, not with everything going the way it was.
It will run its due course.
Kat held the notebook out once more before giving Chris a reassuring pat on the forearm. It wasn’t a kind topic but there was some comfort in knowing there was nothing to be done about it.
“No.”
“Do you need help?”
“Absolutely not.”
“I wouldn’t either.”
“You’re not alone. I’m here. I promise that I’m here.”
“Okay.”
