AMERICA AFTER THE FALL: PAINTING IN THE 1930s Edited by Judith A. Barter

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition America after the Fall: Painting in the 1930s, which opened at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016 and traveled to the Musée de l’Orangerie, Paris, in 2016–17 and the Royal Academy of Arts, London, in 2017.

For Machine Use Only is published in conjunction with curator Mohammad Salemy’s installation at the 11th Gwangju Biennale (2016).

The book expands on the idea of machinic vision, featuring short texts by a range of thinkers, philosophers, and scholars who were asked to contemplate the possibilities and limitations of a world understood and interpreted by algorithmically driven forms of artificial intelligence. Our increasing reliance on computation requires us to come up with new ways of thinking about automation and its relationship to the politics of knowledge and our knowledge of politics.

JON RAFMAN: NINE EYES Edited by Kate Steinmann, with texts by Joanne McNeil, Sohrab Mohebbi, Gabrielle Moser, Jon Rafman in collaboration with Sandra Rafman, and Kate Steinmann

In 2007 Google began adding street views to its maps. These photographs are taken by a worldwide fleet of hybrid electric automobiles, each one bearing a nine-lensed camera mounted on a rooftop pole. This clothbound volume includes images from The Nine Eyes of Google Street View, an ongoing project by artist, filmmaker, and essayist Jon Rafman (born 1981) documenting images from Google Street View. The photographs Rafman selects through screen captures range from the beautiful to the violent—each, in some way, an extraordinary moment. Rafman's project reveals that while Google appears to present the world truthfully and disinterestedly in these images, its mechanized eyes nonetheless create a highly politicized space.

THE WAY OF THE SHOVEL ON THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL IMAGINARY IN ART Dieter Roelstraete

The Way of the Shovel accompanies MCA Chicago Manilow Senior Curator Dieter Roelstraete's exhibition tracing the interest in history, archaeology, and archival research that defines some of the most highly regarded art of the last decade. The book includes essays by Roelstraete, Bill Brown, Sophie Berrebi, Diedrich Diederichsen, and Ian Alden Russell; entries by Roelstraete, Karsten Lund, and Naomi Beckwith; and artists' statements by Moyra Davey, Rebecca Keller, Joachim Koester, Hito Steyerl, and Zin Taylor. The exhibition is presented at the MCA from November 9, 2013, to March 9, 2014. 

This 328-page hardcover volume features a library binding. Its spine is foiled-stamped with a drawing by Mark Dion of the artist’s shovel. The book includes ten typefaces, each of which assumes a particular role; one of these is "Newberry Detterer," a hot metal bindery type used by the Conservation department of Chicago’s Newberry Library and digitized for the first time especially for The Way of the Shovel by MCA Director of Design, Publishing, and New Media James Goggin, who designed the book with MCA Senior Designer Scott Reinhard.

Jimmy Robert Vis-à-vis accompanies the first large-scale US solo exhibition devoted to the work of Brussels-based artist Jimmy Robert. Essays by MCA Marilyn and Larry Fields Curator Naomi Beckwith and art historian Marie de Brugerolle, along with a dialogue between Robert and artist Ian White, complement a survey of Robert's oeuvre.

NMPS PANEL: WHAT MAKES A GREAT EDITOR?

MCA Director of Publications and Senior Editor Kate Steinmann presented as a panelist in the National Museum Publishing Seminar (NMPS) session What Makes a Great Editor? with Libby Mahoney, Chief Curator at the Chicago History Museum, and Cheryl Towler Weese, Partner and Creative Director at Chicago's Studio Blue. The panel was chaired by Susan F. Rossen, recently retired Executive Director of Publications at the Art Institute of Chicago (a position now occupied by the venerable Robert V. Sharp).

In conjunction with the seminar, which MCA Chicago co-sponsored with the Art Institute of Chicago, the Chicago History Museum, the Office of Tourism and Culture, and the University of Chicago’s Graham School, the Art Institute's Liz Neely and Amy Webber put together Beyond the Printed Page: Museum Digital Publishing Bliki, a blog-meets-wiki covering museum publishing industry news, digital strategy, copyright and other legal issues, organization and workflow, and much more. The "bliki" won the 2013 Best of the Web award for Professional Museum Web Site at the 2013 Museums and the Web conference.

DIFFERENT WAYS NOT TO SAY DEPORTATION Ariella Azoulay 

An artist's project by well-known author and cultural critic Ariella Azoulay, author of The Political Ontology of Photography (2012) and The Civil Contract of Photography (2008), Different Ways Not to Say Deportation presents a collection of drawings of photographs taken in Palestine between 1947 and 1950. These photographs are held in the archives of the CICR (International Committee of the Red Cross), Geneva. After the CICR allowed Azoulay to view the photographs but denied her permission to show them, she created line drawings of each photograph. She then exhibited each of these drawings alongside three associated captions: the CICR's "official" caption, a descriptive caption written by Azoulay, and an alternative caption, also written by Azoulay, that raises questions and points out associations the images evoke.  

In this publication, which presents the full set of drawings and captions, Azoulay introduces the suppressed photographs with a discussion of “unshowable photographs.” This text lays out the mission of Azoulay's reconstruction project: to restore the potential of the archive to yield previously obscured truths, to undo the suppression of history, and to question our complicity in the archive's dominant narrative. Inspired by Walter Benjamin’s notion of “incomplete history” and defining photography as an event that unfolds as a viewer beholds a photograph, Azoulay emphasizes that history is something very much of the present, not a story of a completed past.⁠

This booklet is featured as an insert in Fillip 16 as part of the second installment of Apparatus, Capture, Trace: Photography and Biopolitics, an ongoing series edited by Fillip Associate Editor Kate Steinmann. RASHID JOHNSON: MESSAGE TO OUR FOLKS Julie Rodrigues Widholm

This book accompanies New York-based artist Rashid Johnson's first major solo museum exhibition, Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks, which opened at MCA Chicago in 2012 and is traveling to the Miami Art Museum (2012), the High Museum of Art (2013) and the Kemper Art Museum (2013–14). Essays by MCA Pamela Alper Associate Curator Julie Rodrigues Widholm, novelist and critic Touré, and art historian Ian Bourland offer insight into Johnson's rapidly diversifying practice. The book also features an excerpt from Paul Beatty's coming-of-age novel The White Boy Shuffle (1996).

Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks is the inaugural volume in the series MCA Monographs, an ongoing series published by the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The series provides an ongoing visual record of work by some of today's most influential newer artists in conjunction with critical essays by leading art historians, curators, and critics. Each volume accompanies a solo exhibition at the museum of work by a rising artist who has gained international notice for significant contributions to contemporary art, bringing this work to wider public attention in the focused context of the monograph and adding depth and dimension to the exhibitions.

THIS WILL HAVE BEEN: ART, LOVE & POLITICS IN THE 1980s Helen Molesworth

This Will Have Been: Art, Love & Politics in the 1980s accompanies curator Helen Molesworth’s survey of art from the period 1979 to 1992 (from Punk to Clinton), which opened at MCA Chicago in 2012 and travelled to Walker Art Center (2012) and Institute of Contemporary Art Boston (2012–13).

Essays by Molesworth, Johanna Burton, William Horrigan, Elisabeth Lebovici, Kobena Mercer, Sarah Schulman, and Frazer Ward, along with critical texts on each work in the exhibition, situate the work in the historical context of the period. The book features over 200 full-color reproductions of works in a range of media, including drawing, painting, photography, and sculpture.

MCA MONOGRAPHS

Since 1967, when the fledgling Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago opened its doors, a central aspect of the museum’s mission has been to bring the work of rising artists to public attention. Since these earliest days, MCA Chicago has reserved space in its active schedule exhibition schedule to present the first major solo museum exhibitions of important contemporary artists poised to become iconic figures in the art world, among them Dan Flavin, Jeff Koons, Steve McQueen, Lorna Simpson, and Jeff Wall. 

On the occasion of a renewed exhibition initiative to present these “firsts,” the MCA is proud to introduce a new series of accompanying books, MCA Monographs. This series adds depth and dimension to the exhibitions, which explore the work of influential artists who are just reaching the threshold of major impact, transforming the contemporary art scene with work that surprises, challenges, and delights. 

Each book in the MCA Monographs series accompanies a solo exhibition at the MCA of the work of an artist who has already gained international notice for a significant body of work. In most cases the MCA’s book is the first substantial volume dedicated solely to the artist’s work.

The series, which began with Rashid Johnson: Message to Our Folks (published April 2012 and nearly sold out!), will be published 1–3 times annually. The second volume in the series is Jimmy Robert Vis-à-vis (August 2012), followed by Goshka Macuga: Exhibit, A (December 2012), Amalia Pica (February 2013; co-published with MIT List Visual Arts Center), and a volume on the work of William J. O'Brien (January 2014). Artbook | D.A.P. is co-publisher of the series beginning with the third volume, Amalia Pica.
