Sol Lumen is the name of the laser artwork linking De Uithof with the city centre as part of Utrecht University’s 375th anniversary celebrations. "For the opening of the anniversary celebrations, Utrecht University commissioned Laserfabrik to create this unique work of art in the Netherlands. From 20 to 26 March, seven coloured laser beams will shine across three kilometres, linking Utrecht Science Park/De Uithof and the Utrecht city centre. The Sol Lumen laser installation symbolises the strong knowledge and cultural ties between Utrecht University and the city of Utrecht. The first artwork of its kind to be displayed in the Netherlands, the installation will be visible a considerable distance from the city. Sol Lumen is part of Utrecht University’s 375th anniversary celebrations." (source http://www.uu.nl/university/utrecht/EN/anniversary/laser/Pages/default.aspx, 23 March 2011)

Fleeted Happenings
This Rube Goldberg machine is “powered” by a single beam of light, using mirrors, magnifying glasses, and reflective surfaces to burn through strings, melt ice, pop balloons, and more…

Translucent Concrete
Light concrete slabs or bricks are manufactured as precast concrete. The material is generally from about 95% fine-grained concrete and 5% light-conducting fibers which are placed in parallel layers in the liquid concrete. Thousands of light-conducting fibers are thus embedded in any light concrete element. If they are illuminated from the opposite side (by sunlight or artificial light sources), they direct the light across the material and bring it to “lights”. Thus, no real transparency is achieved, but rather a “copy” means a person or object between the light source and the light concrete are emerging depending on the distance more or less sharp shadows.
