Abortion seems to be the only medical procedure that people want to deny you based on how you got in that situation. Drove drunk, got in an accident and need an organ transplant? No problem. Messing around with a gun, accidentally shoot yourself in the leg and need surgery? Of course. Smoke tobacco for most of your life and need treatment for lung cancer? Yep. Climb a tree, fall out and break your leg? We’ll fix that right up. Have sex and get pregnant when you don’t want to be? "Legitimate Rape" on SVU &Real Justice

I am not a follower of the television show Law & Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit.) There’s something about the glorified police brutality and the idea of people’s trauma as entertainment that turns my stomach. Then I heard they did an episode called “Legitimate Rape.” The title is a play on the outrageous comments made by Todd Akin, a Republican candidate for a Senate seat in Missouri last August claiming victims of “legitimate rape” rarely get pregnant. I became curious about how they took this on, and figured it was worth watching, just this once.

… the socialization of boys regarding masculinity is often at the expense of women. I came to realize that we don’t raise boys to be men, we raise them not to be women (or gay men). We teach boys that girls and women are “less than” and that leads to violence by some and silence by many. It’s important for men to stand up to not only stop men’s violence against women but, to teach young men a broader definition of masculinity that includes being empathetic, loving and non-violent.
