They/Them Pronouns Awareness Day!

August, a youth leader at Youth Outlook in Chicago, is trying to establish a holiday: They/Them Pronouns Awareness Day! Here’s the info.

What is it?

They/Them Pronouns Awareness Day is a day with three main goals in mind:

A chance for people to be surrounded and overwhelmed by people correctly gendering them and affirming their identities so they can hold onto that the other 364 days of the year when they are usually misgendered

A time to laugh at the stuff that usually gets us mad or upset, like people saying “both genders” or “his or hers” or other buffoonery 

An opportunity for educating people on the usage of they/them pronouns

How can we celebrate it?

Any way you see fit! But here are some ideas:

passing out pins, stickers, or name tags that state people’s PGP (preferred gender pronouns) 

finding healthy, nonviolent ways for participants to express their frustration for all the times they are invalidated and misgendered

carrying around flyers that break down oppressive gender structures, such as TSER’s Gender Unicorn

having participants donate 1 bag of candy each, then allotting the candy into bags to the Participants Who Don’t Use They/Them Pronouns for a game: whenever they misgender a participant who uses They/Them pronouns, they owe them a piece of candy

Who can participate?

ANYONE! We highly encourage cisgender and binary trans folks to participate so you can learn more and be a source of support for the folks who use They/Them Pronouns.

When is it?

March 25th, 2016

Where is it?

Everywhere! Feel free to have your school’s GSA hold an event, any LGBTQ+ resource centers can hold events, churches, community centers, you can even get a group of friends and hold it at someone’s house!

I really hope you are interested in sharing this info, and maybe even attending or hosting your own event to celebrate this holiday!
