Water-writing mats turn black when wet and return to their original colour once dry, so they are often used to practise calligraphy with water. The black colour allows you to see your writing clearly, and the mat can be reused as soon as the writing dries and disappears.

Calling for help from the underworld? Sounds like a villainous thing to do, doesn't it? But then, Dark Yugi is no stranger to summoning demons. Since the situation calls for it, he might as well make his field a "Devil's Sanctuary"!

This is the last card added to Yugi's deck during the Battle City arc. In point of fact, it's not really Yugi's card- it's Kaiba's. Kaiba believes that this is the only card capable of defeating Dark Malik's god card, Ra.

After Dark Yugi defeats Kaiba in their final duel, Kaiba is content just to set up a time bomb (!) and storm off the island. He's stopped by Isis, who gives him a bit of a talking-to. Kaiba is initially resistant to her words, but Kaiba's little brother Mokuba intervenes on her behalf, and Kaiba eventually relents. (Sort of.)

To prove that he's overcome his past, Kaiba helps Yugi and his friends by letting Dark Yugi borrow this card.

In a way, it's the opposite of "Life Shaver"- this is Kaiba's card, but the only character who ever uses it in the manga is Dark Yugi!

Now, for a while near my project's start I wasn't sure if I should include this card. It's a vital part of Yugi's deck composition in the finals, and plays a key role in the duel against Dark Malik, but the manga is very clear- this is not Yugi's card.

In the end, I decided it should be part of my project. I broadened the scope of my project to include not just all cards Yugi owned over the course of the story, but also cards that Yugi borrowed (like this one), or that he was hanging on to (like "Red-Eyes Black Dragon"). As long as one of the Yugis had possession of a card at some point and used it for more than one turn, it's fair game for my project.

So what's the big deal about this card, anyway? Why does Kaiba think it's the only card that can overcome Dark Malik's ridiculously-strong mythical god card, Ra?

Most people tend to think of this card with its Konami counterpart in mind, which isn't very notable. But the true strength of this card lies in a manga-only mechanic that never made it to their version of the game.

You see, in the "Super Expert" ruleset of Magic & Wizards, when a player declares an attack with a monster, and their opponent Special Summons a new monster to the field after that declared attack (usually through the use of a Magic Card or something like that), the target of that first player's attack forcibly becomes the newly-Special Summoned monster. (In Konami's game, this would only happen if a player had no monsters to defend them beforehand; in the manga, the attack gets redirected even if the attacked player has other monsters to defend themselves with.)

We see Kaiba take advantage of this mechanic in the Dark Yugi vs. Kaiba semifinals duel, where Dark Yugi declares an attack with "Black Magician", only for Kaiba to activate "Mechanical Magic Mirror" to grab Dark Yugi's copy of "Resurrection of the Dead" from his Graveyard and use that to revive Obelisk!

And so Dark Yugi is forced to attack the defense mode 4000 DEF "The God of Obelisk" with his 2500 ATK "Black Magician", resulting in him losing a whopping 1500 Life Points!

Now take a look at what "Devil's Sanctuary" does. It Special Summons a token monster with a unique ability: any damage it would take in a battle is taken by your opponent instead. Kaiba's plan here is to bait Dark Malik into attacking with Ra during his duel, activate this card after that attack gets declared, and that's game! Dark Malik takes every bit of damage he inflicts with Ra.

It gets even better- one of Ra's special abilities allows its user to sacrifice all but 1 of their Life Points to increase Ra's ATK by the amount given to Ra's ATK. Kaiba could bait Dark Malik into using that ability, perhaps by Fusion Summoning his 4500 ATK "Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon"; then, after Dark Malik attacks with his now ultra-strong monster, Kaiba activates this card and Dark Malik loses his singular Life Point!

Of course, would a theoretical Kaiba vs. Dark Malik match have gone exactly the way Kaiba imagines it would? I have my doubts.
