I really, really like this character bit for Rauru.

Before Age of Imprisonment, I thought he's a pretty personable, gregarious, calm, and Zen-like goat-dragon-rabbit-biped. But in this game I kinda find him a little awkward and keeps to himself a lot more than I imagined (ironically making him really similar to King Dimitri. Also like why is Raphica SOOOO Claude, huh? Jesus those two lords died and isekaied into Zelda universe).

I am just so delighted by this apparent disconnection between him carrying himself regally and stoically in public, and him being introspective and doubtful of himself in private. Rauru questioned himself because his arrogance was what cost him his wife AND a souped-up Ganondorf that not only conquered Hyrule, but also terrorized and killed so many innocent lives in the kingdom under his charge. The blood of the people who died is, in other words, on his hands too. 

You could kinda forget this was the sort of weight he's actually enduring if you just focus on how he behaves most of the times in public. He paralleled Wild Era Link by hiding his insecurities behind a sort of stoic conviction and that "keep moving forward" attitude. Gotta save these people there. No time to think about that. Need to do this here. Damn it, so many suffering Now is not the time to dwell on that!

But deep down inside, Ganondorf's taunt really got under his skin! Can a truly good soul also be so arrogant that it costs so many lives, along someone he loves and values deeply? Does his secret stone amplify this sort of arrogance? His light power is so blinding. So overwhelming. It DOES feel like arrogance personified in a way, right?

I've already really liked the way Rauru sacrificed himself back in Tears of the Kingdom because it was fucking EPIC (I'm a pretty simple-minded creature), but THIS one bit actually elevated the whole thing to me now: that very act is also Rauru trusting in the goodness of his own soul.

He takes G-Zaddy's power in and trusts that even as he stretches the secret stone's maximum amplifying power—for whatever fault his soul might spot, he will still not only resist Ganondorf's powerful corruption, he will even be able to purify it through the magic connected to his soul, and uphold this for eons. 

And brother, HE FUCKING ACHIEVED THAT ALL THE WAY TILL ToTK's TIME. 

Man, I aspire to be THIS steadfast in trusting myself even with all that self-doubt and guilt. Absolute king shit.

I hate that I’m always trying to find cool biology themed stuff to wear but all the “nature inspired” clothing companies just have like two crossed arrows or a minimalistic mountain on a sweatshirt. Fucking lame, that’s barely even nature-adjacent. Put the life cycle of a salamander on a jacket, put hyena skeleton patterns on leggings, put a damn field guide of birds of prey on a peacoat and THEN you can have my money. Do NOT give me a shirt with a leaf on it that says “stay wild” or some bullshit I would much prefer clothing that broadcasts to everyone around me how many teeth an adult Jaguar has or how some pitcher plants can catch and digest rats.

Ok so like if the argument is “Rauru questionable”… why? Why is he questionable? Because he’s powerful?

Ganondorf attacked him and he responded with restrained self defense. Ganondorf lobbed thinly veiled insults at him and his mixed race marriage in his own home, and Rauru responded with patient diplomacy.

One of the points made in the “Hyrule is imperialist” comments is the assumption that Rauru inviting Ganondorf and the Gerudo to join his kingdom basically amounted to a threat… except that’s really obviously not the case?

Rauru didn’t conquer them even after they attacked him. He didn’t conquer anybody. None of the other lands are under Hylian control. They all have their own leadership. They all manage their own resources. In BotW King Dorephan refers to Hylians as the Zora’s allies… not their masters.

Rauru established an alliance, not an empire.

People are concerned, saying “I hate how the other races are subservient to Hylians” except… they’re not. They don’t follow the royal family of Hyrule unquestioningly.

To get help from the other people, Zelda still had to make diplomacy trips and convince them to aid her. Convince them. Not command them. They’re loyal to her because she shows them the respect they deserve and is dedicated to caring for and protecting everyone. She’s not entitled to rule like Ganondorf thinks he is, people follow her because she’s a good leader and it seems to be the same with Rauru. He shared his immense power with others and sacrificed himself to protect everyone from being subjugated by Ganondorf.

Reading Rauru or Zelda as imperialist or Hyrule as an oppressive empire requires ignoring practically all of the canon text and projecting a number of things. So… why do people keep pushing that extremely shallow reading?

Call Nintendo out on its bullshit, by all means! The series has improved over the years because people voiced their legitimate concerns in the past. I just think this whole “imperialist propaganda” argument is completely off base and I really wish the people saying this stuff would pay more attention to the deliberate efforts Nintendo’s made to diversify the Hyrule royal family and the world of Hyrule at large.

Zellard Headcanons Pt. 3

To celebrate today’s awsome Monster Hunter Sunbreak trailer.  - Zellard isn’t one for large parties. Sure he shows up as an important political memeber of the village. However, he keeps to himself, sipping wine in the corner of the room. 

- Zellard is a lover of fine wine as much as he is a lover of tea. He buys imported kegs of wine for himself and often drinks late into the night. The Wyverian sometimes passes out with a good book in one hand and a bottle of red wine in the other. 

- Despite no longer actively hunting, Zellard still works out and eats healthy. Sure he’s no longer the absolute hunk he was as a young man, but he is still well built and quite the looker. 

- Many Wyverian’s sneak a look when Zellard is doing his morning jog as he rarely wears a shirt. Plenty simp for the soft spoken, sexy Wyverian. It will take more than time to ruin Zellard’s handsome physique.  

- Zellard may be quite muscular and a skilled fighter, but he is still quite old and full of aches and pains. He sometimes rewards his cultists for rubbing his aching back and feet, something some are all too eager to do. 

- He often goes into a beserker rage during a hunt, a far cry from his calm fecade. If unarmed he will use his hands, feet, and even teeth at a moment’s notice. Zellard doesn’t show this side often, but none would want to be on the recieving end of his blade. 

- Lastly, Zellard isn’t used to physical affection, but boy does he need it. He very well could wind up sleeping on top of his significant other like an oversized cat. There is no hope of moving him either, for you are now his bed lol.
