Writing Resources to use instead of AI

For coming up with character names:

Behind the name (my absolute fav)

Allows you to choose the origin of where you want the name to be from, whether you want a more feminine vs masculine vs androgenous name (as voted by users), random surname generator, and clicking on the name gives you important info like if there are any famous people with the same name, where it’s from, how common it is, and how people tend to see it, etc.

You can also search their name database by letter or meaning or origin, so if you know you want a character who has a name/surname that starts with an A from Ireland, there’s a whole list for you to choose from.

Census sites

Especially useful if you’re looking for a name from a specific place and/or time period. Just search “(country) census (year)” and you’ll find a database of real people who lived in that place at that time. No one can ever call your names unrealistic again.

For coming up with place names:

Fantasy name generator

This site can basically come up with any name for any person, place, or thing you might ever need. There are also specific generators for different fandoms if you’re looking to make an OC in an established world.

For finding that one word on the tip of your tongue:

One Look Thesaurus

This is my go-to. Not only can you find synonyms like a regular thesaurus, but you can also describe words like “unhappy smile” or “quiet laugh” to find the more specific word you’re looking for.

For coming up with ideas:

Word cloud

When I need to inspire a new idea, I write down all the things I’m interested in (hauntings, academia, lesbians, etc.) and put them into a word cloud to shuffle them next to each other. Sometimes seeing a concept in a new context can spark new ideas!

For visualizing places and characters:

Pinterest

Pinterest can at times be a bit too sterile for my tastes, but if you use the right words, you can find more realistic photos of places. For example, adding “aesthetic” after basically any word will bring up a more broad collection of photos to help you flesh out places.

This is also a great way to find photos of people and fashion to help visualize characters. I’m bad at describing clothes, so I usually collect photos of outfits to help me know what my characters are wearing. Searching up “character inspiration” will collect more interesting photos and drawings of people who might not exactly be of our world.

(However, to make Pinterest not show you AI results, you have to go into your settings and check the “reduce AI” box. Luckily, it does mostly work.)

Death to Stock

Like pinterest but completely AI free (hooray!) Only drawback is that you have to pay a monthly subscription (about $20 CAD).

Cosmos

Very similar to pinterest but slightly more "artsy". I'm not super familiar with this one but I believe all the photos are human and you can save them and create collections with a free account.

Dupe Photos

Royalty-free stock image site with very Pinterest-core photos!

Minecraft

If you haven’t built your entire fictional city in Minecraft instead of writing, why not? It’s fun.

The Sims

This one is dual purpose because you can not only create your characters in Create a Sim, but you can design their houses. If you really want to go for it, you can bulldoze all the lots in your town and build your world from scratch.

Easy to follow definitions and examples, and if you learn better by listening, every article comes with a podcast to follow along with instead.

Grammar Monster

This one is my favourite for checking grammar rules because there’s tons of examples in graphics that helps for any situation.

I AM NOT TRYING TO HATE!!! And hey I think it is a brand deal or something, idk. I just found it funny cause I saw the post and wanted to recreate some of the outfits and wanted to see were there from and so when I saw the Dior logo I went oh okay I can easily look this up (also I was shocked cause I forgot Dior is not just a makeup brand😅) and so I went into the men section and scrolled until I saw the prices and was like “dang that’s a lot, well I am sure that Lewis’s one isn’t that much-“

Boy was I hit in the face.🤦‍♀️ more so by my own hand hitting me, cause of course a big brand like Dior is going to have prices that go into the thousands.

Dang this wasn’t meant to turn into this big talking or I guess rant, I just wanted to talk about this cause I don’t know if anyone else likes to recreate certain celebrities or characters outfits for fun sometimes, honestly just wanted to get some of the outfits cause I am getting a new wardrobe for spring and summer time and wanted ideas and seeing the Lewis photos, I actually not only loved him in the photos and clothing, but also loved the clothing.

I feel so insane about ai. I've had face-to-face conversations with people who use it for therapy, who use it to calculate the safety of pill interactions, who use it for all their emails and grant applications and legal documents and academic papers and finance sheets and for every single question they have about the world, and if you tell them about the ecological costs they just laugh and say "I guess I've used a lot of water." and I've been in multiple gatherings of 10+ people where I'm THE ONLY PERSON who doesn't use chatgpt. it's turning me into a ranting raving pariah, because how don't you people see??? why don't you understand??????? this bullshit didn't exist five years ago, you absolutely do not need it, and it is destroying everything

It’s everywhere now, even in schools. Had class and they have an AI assistant on zoom to take notes of what was said. Just record the fucking lecture and put it up, you don’t need AI to do this shit for you.

They also started pushing their own version of an AI assistant to help you study for classes. I took a year break before going into this program and the fact that it’s changed this drastically is BONKERS to me and its basically saying “oh it’s okay to use it…but no no you can’t use it for assignments,”.

Don’t even get me started on the amount of shit I got from my group members when I asked them if they used ChatGPT to help with any of their contributions and snapped when they said yes (I took the entire project and redid it).

FUCK AI.

i really try to keep things quiet and drama free, so i apologize to those of you who don’t want to see this.

but this person is right. the way people continue to enable that blog is shameful. it’s cesspool of negativity, bitterness, and disrespect. yes, people are allowed to have their own opinions, but it’s more than just opinion at this point. it’s hatefulness, it’s vitriol, it’s unhinged and inappropriate. the world is quite literally in flames around us. why would you want to add more negativity to it at all? i wish more people would report and block that blog rather than engaging with it. i don’t care if you think “lewis is a public figure, he deserves it”. actually, no he doesn’t. and neither does his partner. most of it is someone treating their own opinions and assumptions as fact. they spew some pretty asinine narratives, and treat it like it’s gospel. the behavior has gone on for far too long and i’m tired of staying silent about it. it’s high time someone spoke out against it. get mad at me, i don’t care. drama and gossip destroys fandoms, i’ve seen it happen many times. and it will also destroy this one if it’s left unchecked.

I Know I’m opening up a can of worms on this one and I absolutely know it’s going to ruffle feathers but…it’s gotta be said.

I’ve had discourse on here about parasocial relationships and fandoms, and the fact it’s gotten this serious should attest to that. Not only are you speaking on someone who you don’t know (and no, just because he’s a public figure doesn’t mean you know him), but you’re bringing his family into it, his partner into it and everyone else who associates with him into it.

Toxicity in fandom is what makes it crash and burn, and it’s also what gives it a bad reputation AND it’s also what makes them fall off.

Point, blank, period.

If you guys don’t agree then there’s a possibility you are part of the problem and you may need some self reflection, because truly it’s not good for you nor is it good for your mental health.

Edit: and yeah, I know it’s going to fall on deaf ears because they’re just going to make another blog…blah blah blah. I get it. But maybe these words may make people realize that the person that they’re talking about is an actual human being. Put yourself in their shoes and think about how shitty you’d feel if they started dragging everyone you knew into the spotlight over choices you make as a full fledged ADULT.
