You’d notice him in a few of your classes. You’d also notice him skipping a bunch with his friends, usually Power— attached at the hip; you’d believe they’ve known each other since birth, female version of him, honestly—veterinary major. You saw him with Aki— known pretty boy on campus, kept to himself most of the time, not someone you’d suspect to hang out with the blond; literature major.
You’d notice the lingering stares he’d gotten from upperclassmen women, how they’d stare at him like he was prey, not something to be cherished and loved but used for pleasure and status. He was a handsome boy, that was obvious, common knowledge depending on who you asked. You just wondered why you kept seeing him, Denji— one of the most popular guys on campus, strangely naive all things considered, very passionate about his love for women. You'd think he was trying to convince you he’s straight—child psychology major.
Some people thought it was weird, others thought it didn’t fit his personality (which you’d have to agree), a few said it was because of his shit childhood, or whatever he’d say about it. It wasn’t an exciting topic for him, and no one really cared to learn when he threw his parties.
Denji would throw late night parties at a sizably big mansion, who’d you assume was Aki’s. He started them to get to know people, talk, drink, dance, hopefully more, in any available guest room who preferably didn’t have people already getting high or having sex. When he’s not throwing parties you’d wake up regretting in the morning, he was painting. It was oddly unfair for him to be so talented in his craft, everyone’s seen his art, it’s hard not to, I mean, that’s how he gets on the staff's good side, by making free portraits for teachers and having them hung in the halls.
But back to your point. You kept seeing him, whether it be just passing by, or talking to your friends like he’d known them since forever. He was so charismatic and charming and on top of that he was funny and insanely kind when he wanted to be. Dimples lined his acne prone cheeks as he had made another one of your friends, Yoshida— also charming, in that unnerving, ominous way, insanely smart but pretty sarcastic and sassy for a man; marine science major— laugh. He was spreading within your friend group like a common cold and it started to piss you off, especially because you were one of the last people he’d off-handily invite to one of his parties on Friday, well actually, he hadn’t even invited you himself. Yoshida had to invite you for him, to his party? You’d been told he was impromptu but this was a whole new level of bullshit.
So the week went on, you’d keep seeing him. He’d nervously make eye contact then evert them just as quick if he found another pair of eyes meet his. You wondered if he’d do that with anyone else, if his auburn-brown eyes met others with confidence, why’d he treat you so differently? You really shouldn’t care, and besides, you barely know him— but it feels like a bad joke no one's letting you in on, anyone would question that, right?
Once Friday afternoon rolls around and you’re ending your last few classes, Asa— another close friend, wants to be a librarian so she “doesn’t have to speak to people for the rest of her life”;her words not mine, writes essays for people monday through wednesday for 10 bucks a paragraph (get that bag girl); Computer science major— offers to walk you home because surprise, surprise, she was also invited. Does he even know her? She would never go to a party, nonetheless one of his?!
“So, are you going? To the party I mean—“
”I know what you meant, Asa. I’m not sure, gimme some time to think about it.”
She rolls her eyes, the only woman she’d give attitude to is you, and possibly Yoru—known as “the better sister” compared to Asa. I think if I were related to Yoru I’d be depressed all the time too. She has a major in International Affairs, and no, no one really knows what that means. The twins are polar opposites, which makes sense that Yoru’s going to the party as well.
“Geez, someone’s grumpy. Did ‘Shida call you fat again?” Asa asked, because of course she did.
The decision was eating you alive, in all honesty. Which really wasn’t a big deal in the long run, and he probably won't even notice you’re there, but you need the break, and you’ve gotten all your homework done, what’s the harm?
Turns out, there was a lot of harm, actually. You enter the full building with blaring purple lights and even louder house music. You wont lie, whoever the DJ was had some bangers. You see Aki talking to Makima— a very intimidating psychology research assistant, with scarily good grades, “perfect-pretty-girl” personality, and even better looks. You didn’t want to interrupt their intellectual conversation, so your eyes landed on the blond that you just couldn’t shake off. He kept glancing at the door like he was waiting for someone, or maybe something? You weren’t entirely sure. The minute his eyes met yours his shoulders shot up and the drink he was barely nursing spilt on Aki’s vintage wood floors.
His eyes left yours to inspect the damage and it wasn't too much, but definitely a problem for dancers or walkers who had no idea where they were going. He set off to the kitchen, getting bombarded by a group who invited him to dance, he declined, then drunk party goers that thanked him for the invitation, this guy couldn’t catch a break it seemed, and you found that amusing. Which is why you followed him, there isn’t any other reason.
Once you both reach the kitchen he looks for wet wipes and a new drink, which you learned was punch, wasn’t even spiked which surprised you even more as to how he deals with all this sober.
”Denji.” You called out loud enough so he could hear
”augh!— fuck, uh— hey, hi.” I guess you startled him. Brow raised and arms crossed you ask why he had invited you in the first place, seemingly out of nowhere, and you needed another topic instead of ‘hey did you do the homework… oh yea I could give you the answers I guess.’
“Oh yeah!—“ pauses to close the fridge so you could look at him fully , and he sure as hell doesn’t tower over you, but he’s tall. You could add that to the list of traits he unknowingly has.
”It’s ‘cause I think you’re real cute and I wanted to get to know you and your friends a lil’ better.” He smiles bashfully and silently offers you a drink by tilting his red cup towards you.
”I mean, jus’ lookin’ at ‘cha, I don’t really think you’d be inta guys like me— but I swear if you give ya boy Denji a chance I won’t disappoint! Honest!”
