‘My walk home’

This is a recording experiment I did when I walked back home from college. I wanted to see what it will sound like if I took an audio clip my way back home if I could catch some conversations and some other sounds, anything really. Its interesting how much you actually hear when walking somewhere. I heard other people talking in english and other languages, you hear cars starting and driving away, you hear birds, you here the wind you hear life happening. Sometimes it sounds like there is an airplane plying past and horses running past with their hooves, but its not. Ive noticed by not being able to see what you are hearing your mind runs wild, it jumps to other ideas and pictures. You start to image all the sounds and the voices you hear, you start to think how they look and if it was a green car or a red car driving past. I really like this and will try it again.

I found some old BBC news idents over 60 years. It is quite fascinating to just see how much idents change over the years as the graphics become developed with all the new ways of methods and technology. 

What are TV idents? and are they important?

-A TV ident is the little bit of a video that plays a few seconds before a programme starts, informing the viewer if which channel they are watching, A promotional sequence, its critical part of a TV stations brand identity. 

Tv idents are very important, because they identify the show you watching, the branding, marketing, packaging and re-packaging, scheduling and segmentation within scheduling. If there is no ident viewers will not know what they watching and the company will loose their business.

‘Blank canvas 2′

I have done this before, but I tried a different method of posting it now. Instead of having the three stages merged together in one picture that was to much on each other and did not come out as good as it could have been, I posted three separate pictures. The first state of bare canvas face and the last stage of taking the canvas work off has the same composition and facial size, I then added the middle stage of the full face more close up and effective. I did some editing ti the pictures by having a darker background and more abstract art like not removing the background of the hair. I added a cooling filter to give it a more cool blue effect on the pictures. I am much happier with this outcome.

‘Logorama’

A  french digital animation created by the artists François Alaux, Hervé De Crécy and Ludovic Hauplain in France 2010. This was an animation made of all the brands in the world and that just shows that we are run by companies. The video for me personally came off very vulgar and dramatic. It had very strong scenes that show real life problems like one of my classmates pointed out that Macdonals was knocked down by the weight-watchers company, that people are not careful with their health and addictions to some brands. They used big brands like Big Boy, Pringles and Macdonalds as bad guys in this video to maybe show that we are run by these companies more than others. The voices of the animation characters were recorder in a studio, which means the artist did take a while perfecting this video with professional equipment, not like all the other videos we discussed, because they were mostly all handmade. The video also came off like a big advertisement for all the companies to get the attention of viewers. It was an entertaining idea.

‘Lightness dark lightness’

A clay animation made by artist Jan Svankmajor in Czech 1989/90. This was a weird, frustrating video of a piece of clay forming a human body in a tiny house with two doors and a light. It started off as just two hands and then eyes, brain, teeth, tongue etc. It was all filmed on a video camera and the background noises are all human made, most probably by the artist himself. The video does capture your attention because it starts strange and then ends even more strange. At the end the body is stuck in this little house not being able to move at all while breathing very heavily as the light gets switched off. I am not sure how the video makes me feel but it does make me feel that sometimes there is a lot going on at once and its frustrating and overwhelming so that we feel stuck in a box with nothing to reach.

‘Rebecca Horn’

This performance was also very strange, I did not enjoy this film nor did I find it interesting. She made a full head and face band strap and attached pencils to it and then tried to draw by moving her head around against a paper. It just reminded me of spiders and their many legs. Uncomfortable and pointless.

‘Laurie Anderson’

She is an american artist and does many performances of art pieces and visual languages that are not quite what you are used to. We watched one of her performances where she sat in the corner of the stage in bright red-orange light making sounds by tapping on her microphone stand and saying a poem, I could not make out what she was saying, but the feeling of her performance was strange and abnormal. It made me think of the horror movies made in the old times where it was not very well developed like it is today, it gave me that idea of just a man standing in the dark night and there is weird tapping sounds and unbearable voices.

‘The impact of a book’

I found this artwork extraordinary, because every brick lays perfectly straight until that one book, that one book causes destruction in the whole wall. It just makes me think of life when there is that one bad thing or even that one good thing it will impact your life forever, you either have to learn to live with it or build more impacts to get the wall perfectly straight again. This piece of work is very interesting for me, it is also related to time-based work because this wall was hand built, laying each brick down perfectly and making sure the book is in the middle of the wall.

Animations

‘Different types of animation’

1) Traditional animation

- This is one of the more older forms of animation, this sometimes can be referred as cel animation. This type of animation can stretch as far back as 5000 BC. This animation is mostly hand drawn than digital, although you can use this type of animation for digital purposes. 

2) 2D Animation

- A very popular type of animation. This is also hand drawn but will be used on computers and other technology systems the is also called the vector-based animation, this animation is from the traditional animation, but it has improved.

3) 3D Animation

- This type of animation works in a complete different way the the traditional type of animation. They both require an understanding of the same principles of movement and composition but the technical skill are very different. This type of animation is also referred to GGI or just GG, this is also more used on computers. The characters in 3D animations are always present. 3D animation has definitely revolutionised how the animation industry looks today.

4) Motion graphics 

- This type of animation is very different than all the other types of animations. unlike the other types of animations it is not character or story driven. Its the art of creatively moving graphic elements or texts, usually for commercial or promotional purposes. This types of animation is more animated logos, videos, app commercials, tv promos and opening titles. This is also al computer based.

5) Stop motion

- This types of animation is a series of taking pictures of an object and moving it a little bit before taking the next picture. This then gets played back one after another and they give the illusion of movement. This related to traditional animation but it is more real life than drawings. there is two other types of stop motion animation and its called: claymation and cut-outs. These are similar to but is used in different methods.

‘channel Z’

We had to create an ident for channel Z. I did a stop frame animation where I hand drawn ‘channel’ with a sharpie and then painted a Z on top of it to give a more ‘dreamwork’ effect like the balloons floating by. I would like to experiment more and try different methods.

My second try to create an animation video. I was more prepared in this clip an found it a bit easier to create and work with. I decided to try to create the growth of a flower from the seed until a fully bloomed. I used a more western colour on the animation to give a more affable effect.

‘Apple’

My first try with creating an animation on photoshop, I am very happy with the outcome of this, I kept it in black and white because it makes me think of the old cartoons form the 80′s. The quality of the video is not so great because I had some difficulties saving the animation from photoshop to my laptop so this is a video I took from my phone of the screen. My animation included an apple getting eaten step by step, even the leaf.

‘Stalker’

Sophie is a french artist that found it interesting to wonder what other people are up to during their daily life. She created this video following a man around up to the point of actually following him out of the country, she got to know the man without even ever talking to him, by just by following him around like a stalker. She then decided to make her mom hire a real detective to follow her around and take photographers of her daily journey. She found it very interesting to follow random people and how the detective followed her around without her realising. I agree with her because you never know where people are off to everyday and where they plan to go, what they are thinking about or if they are happy or sad or if they just lost someone or will be getting married tomorrow, I would do this experiment myself and follow someone just to what they are doing today.

‘Cut piece’

Yoko Ono did a performance art piece where she sat on a stage and let people from the audience come up to her on stage and cut pieces of her clothes. I think she intended to have deeper meaning in this performance, I think she tried to make it seem like her clothes was her wall, and people cutting pieces was them breaking the wall down and getting her to be more confident with the audience and her body as she looses more and more of her clothes. She remained completely still during this performance and did not show any emotion at all. I found this very awe-inspiring.

‘Feeling the memory’

The artist Marina Abramovic did this art piece where she filmed herself trying to say every word she knew in her vocabulary, trying to see if she can run out of words to think or say. It is a very unique idea, but also a bit strange because a human mind is always thinking, so can you actually run out of words? The way the video is filmed is also interesting, for her to look up into the sky and say the words, the colour gives it a more intense feeling as well.

‘Baraka’

One of the most relaxing, mind opening videos I have seen. I like everything of this video, the nature, the sounds and all the different cultures and religions. The video is long, but you as the viewer learns so much and it just makes you realise there is so much in the world than what you are used to, there is so many other ways people see the world than you. This is a video everyone needs to watch its beautiful and wonderful. This also makes me feel and think that we as humans needs to start respecting the world and each other more and look after it or there will be no more beauty and no more astonishing cultures.
