Setting aside the magnitude of the mission itself, what's really amazing is the way Artemis has cracked through even many folks jaded about the subject of space.

And I think part of it has been the way the science-and curiosity-driven nature of NASA contrasts against the profit-and-ego-driven nature of companies like SpaceX.

Unfortunately, it's the latter that we've been used and subjected to. Be it the billionaire joyrides or Musk's obsession with colonizing Mars.

But then Artemis launches. We see that shining trail arc through our atmosphere. We see the booster rockets separate. And we see the first images of Earth in the distance.

For just those moments, we set aside our cynicism and allowed ourselves to wonder.

And then we remember that Trump wants to trash NASA and replace it with a for-profit company.

When he inevitably uses this mission for propaganda purposes, don't let that wonder be poisoned. Don't let it be taken away from you. Cherish and protect it, and cherish and protect the people and institutions (from NASA to our national parks to museums and libraries) that help it to grow.
