Aksarben Industries Cosplay Tips

As Con season is under way, many of us are rushing to get some last minute work done. While some work in resin, others work in fabric, I work in mostly foam. With foam comes some different questions and techniques. I am not an expert, as I am constantly learning. So, I thought I would share a few different opinions based on experience!

Sealing the Foam

When sealing your craft foam, EVA foam, cross... whatever, it's foam. There are 4 good ways to seal it from my experience without having to use expensive or hard to work with resin. 1. Mod Podge. Mod podge will fill in most of the open cells in EVA foam and will lay down a decent base for coverage, but scratches, pressure points and some cells will not close. If you are going to use acrylics or latex paints, this is a good method 2. PVA (aka, white glue). White glue is a good way to close the cells. If you are using this method, you need to use a 1/1 water/glue ratio for the first coat. 2 coats of 100% pva are good after this. DO NOT leave this unpainted if near the skin or in humid climates like KC, or it will liquify and run. 3. Heat: heat closes the cells and a heat gun works great. Just remember to move the gun back and forth and only go until the foam turns shiny. Then coat it with acrylic paint, PVA, Mod Podge or Plastidip. 4. Plastidip. This is a great spray based rubber coating that will cover minor scratches and imperfections. When applying it, spray one light coat and two medium coats. This will leave a great base in which to add your favorite paint. Note: Do NOT ever use white or grey plastidip on foam or you will notice a chemical reaction between the foam and the plastidip. You will not be happy with the results.
