I did end up rewatching The Devil Judge after GO3—and here's a little detail I haven't paid attention to before. Kang Yohan and Kim Gaon arrive to the party of the high and mighty dressed in black and white coats, like a black knight and a white knight—and it's Kang Yohan's design. But Kim Gaon eventually loses his white coat along with a good deal of his illusions—and it's also Kang Yohan's doing :)

i was thinking about yohan's controlling nature at home versus his cavalier attitude at work, and i think the control stems from anxiety. he takes over his father's bedroom because it overlooks the mansion driveway and entrance, so he's perpetually aware of any incomers/intruders.

he knows when ms. ji is annoyed because she jiggles the lock on her way in, and when the physiotherapist is behind schedule because she drives so fast the vibrations rumble up to yohan's bed. that gaon speaks sweetly to the jasmine and boxwood lining the front door when he enters and leaves. all vestiges from vigilance learned during childhood.

so it's utterly novel to him that gaon doesn't instinctively monitor the comings and goings of people at his flat. the first time yohan takes gaon up on his offer to come over any time if yohan has night terrors even if it's 3am, you have the key, yohan makes a perfunctory amount of noise to alert the younger man. but gaon only wakes up when yohan tugs the covers off him after lying in bed for several minutes. and even then, gaon just says 'yohan, oh you're here,' sleepily, pleased, before stumbling out of bed to pee and crawling back in and wrapping his cold feet around yohan's ankles. yohan could hold him without gaon being disturbed, he reflects. so he does.

I know there are some in this fandom under the flag "the writer hates women", but honestly?!?

Ok, Soohyun is a complicated one, more a trope and plot device than a character but, all the others?

Sun Ah, queen.

Minister Cha, queen.

Judge Oh, mamma mia I love her absolute queen.

Elijah, our beloved princess. Also queen.

Mrs Ji, while not my favourite, damn she snaps as well, and gets the queen title for trying to poison the Kang family.

Honestly, I would marry 3 out of 5 of this women. And I love them all.

If Mr Moon hates women, well, he can absolutely write and cast them.

I actually really like Soo-hyun. I think she's incredibly complicated and I feel for her. The way she's male coded to compliment Ga-on's female coded character. Constantly trying to care for and protect him, fix his problems, dry his tears. They've been through a lot together and have a long history. Even from the beginning she wants to be his knight in shining armour. She became a cop in part to protect him. The way love changes over time, especially a crush that starts in childhood, is so integral to their relationship because sometimes your brain doesn't realize the change is happening. But sometimes you convince yourself 'well I love them so I must love them this way,' and so Soo-hyun never stops chasing a romantic relationship. But she is also not phased when he rejects her. Additionally when he kisses her she doesn't really react and tries to leave. And after he confesses...she takes the bed and he takes the floor. I think the love is there for both of them and very strongly at that but I think it's not sexual and in turn not wildly romantic for that reason. If anything it makes me think of the movie De-Lovely which is the really beautiful dramatized story of Cole Porter's relationship with his wife. He was gay, she was his beard, but they loved each other very much. I don't think you could question their love for each other. Soo-hyun and Ga-on are like that for me. It makes it all the more tragic when she is killed immediately after they start the conversation about their love. It feels unresolved to me. And that in turn contributes to Ga-on being willing to die and then after Yo-han saves him and they later see each other ...Ga-on doesn't run off into the sunset with Yo-han. And Yo-han understands. Every relationship in this show is so complex. Next level story telling and a lot more like real life in that sense.

if we say that Yohan fell in love with Gaon during the show, then this was the exact scene and moment when he realized it and admitted it to himself. The way he sighed as he leaned back in the chair and looked at Gaon with loving eyes

this was one of the best silent scenes where a person admits to themselves that they’ve fallen in love.
